About the Buildings
We have met here today specifically to dedicate Hutchins Hall, the last unit to be erected of a splendid group of buildings presented to the University by Mr. W. W. Cook. The buildings are beautiful, useful, and enduring, but taken altogether, with all that they are in themselves and all that they signify, they represent only one part of a comprehensive contribution to the educational resources of the University of Michigan. It is, therefore, both fitting and imperative that we should on this occasion consider carefully the significance of our whole heritage. Other persons today will speak of Mr. Cook's …

A Book Of The Law Quadrangle At The University Of Michigan, Fred Nathan
About the Buildings
William Wilson Cook ardently believed that the future of democratic institutions must depend in large measure upon the ability and integrity of the members of the legal profession. He hoped to improve the quality of the leadership provided by that profession by improving the law schools. As the immediate object of his philanthropy he chose his Alma Mater, The University of Michigan Law School. The Law Quadrangle is the physical embodiment of one aspect of his idea and marks a milestone in legal education. In making possible a close fellowship between lawyers, teachers, and students in an inspiring environment he …

Law As An Educational Factor, William J. Hoynes
Law As An Educational Factor, William J. Hoynes
Journal Articles
In this article, William James Hoynes explores the full scope of education: the means by which all history is brought to knowledge in light of the past and sheds light on the future. He posits that education summarizes all of history, and creates a broadening influence upon the mind of a true scholar. Yet he explains that the law is not to be viewed as a system of arbitrary rules. It rests upon a consciousness of the needs of society. It adapts itself or is enacted with reference to these needs. Not only is the law the highest manifestation of …
The Value Of Sociology To Law, Robert C. Angell
The Value Of Sociology To Law, Robert C. Angell
Michigan Law Review
There has been a good deal said about a sociological approach to law and, as time goes by, more and more attempts are being made to turn words into action. There is a definite trend toward the tise of the sociologist, his research methods, his findings, or his body of principles by those concerned with the law. It may not be amiss, therefore, for a sociologist to inquire what the possibilities of this trend really are. Though, in certain respects, he may be less well equipped for this task than the student of law, he at least has the advantage …
