Legal Education In Georgia, John W. Moreland
Legal Education In Georgia, John W. Moreland
Mercer Law Review
In the spring of 1950, the writer of this report visited the law schools of Georgia on behalf of the Survey of the Legal Profession. These visits were pursuant to the plan for the survey of legal education in America, including all schools whether or not they were approved by the American Bar Association. There are three schools in Georgia which are approved by the American Bar Association and are members of the Association of American Law Schools. They are the Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University, Macon, Georgia; the Lamar School of Law of Emory University, …
A Bibliography Of Textbooks On Georgia Law, James C. Rehberg
A Bibliography Of Textbooks On Georgia Law, James C. Rehberg
Mercer Law Review
The primary purpose of this article is to draw attention to the abundance of text materials which are available on Georgia law, and to mention the fields which have not yet been explored by the legal textwriter. No doubt, some of the works mentioned here are unknown to many Georgia lawyers-through no fault of the works themselves or of the lawyers. Some of the books to be discussed were printed for only a limited distribution and, hence, are not generally available. Then, too, some of them are out of print at the present time. Such books are included here, nevertheless, …

Our Legal System And How It Operates, Burke W. Shartel
Our Legal System And How It Operates, Burke W. Shartel
Michigan Legal Studies Series
Five lectures delivered at the University of Michigan February 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27, 1948 on the Thomas M. Cooley Lectureship, enlarged and revised.
First, it is descriptive of the American legal system as it now exists, not of past law and not of legal systems in general. Second, it portrays the legal system as an operating institution. Third, I have given a large place to the discussion of language in relation to law. Fourth, I have given a considerable amount of space to a discussion of the ways in which statutes are made and interpreted. Fifth, technical ideas …

Miscellaneous: Bar Admission Requirements, James C. Rehberg
Miscellaneous: Bar Admission Requirements, James C. Rehberg
Mercer Law Review
A study of bar admission requirements in Georgia and her neighboring states should serve to focus our attention on this subject which, in the past few years, has occupied the attention of not only the bench and bar of Georgia but also the General Assembly. For the purposes of this study, the states bordering upon Georgia are chosen, because the arguments for and against stricter bar admission requirements will be equally applicable in all of these states. The states to be considered are Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida.

The Law School-1950-51, E. Blythe Stason
Michigan Law Review
Notwithstanding wars and rumors of wars, the September 1950 semester opens with almost 1000 prospective candidates for the legal profession, 372 members of the first-year class, 288 members of the second-year class, 284 in the third-year class, 24 graduate students in law and 3 special students, making a total of 971 students. The enrollment is actually 59 less than last year when a total of 1030 students were enrolled for the fall semester, but the call of reservists and the prospective induction of all other able bodied male persons have had a noticeable though limited effect. Moreover, they create an …

The Study Of Jurisprudence-A Letter To A Hostile Student, Samuel Mermin
The Study Of Jurisprudence-A Letter To A Hostile Student, Samuel Mermin
Michigan Law Review
The value to the law student of a course in jurisprudence has long been a question mark-and to the teachers as well as the students. The students have not been prompted by self-interest, as the teachers have, to come up with plausible erasures of the question mark. Most students, as you did, find the course esoteric, murky and impractical. The teachers, however, many of whom are mercifully unaware of the student reaction, have found sufficient justification for the course on various grounds which I think I can briefly summarize.
