This Technical Data Package (TDP) thoroughly compiles instructions, concepts, and solutions for eight SysMLv2 vignettes. Each vignette illustrates methods to solve complex system modeling challenges. The initial concept for each vignette can drive the use and evaluation of a custom SysMLv2 modeling tool as shown in [1]. They can support a baseline set of tasks to compare usability with other SysMLv2 modeling software tools.
The document starts with three pairs of vignettes for modeling a hypothetical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operated with a Virtual Reality (VR) headset derived from AFIT WKSP 696. The final pair of vignettes focus on two …

This thesis analyzes first and second level WBS elements of 59 historical USAF Acquisition Category I RDT&E programs for accuracy and influence on the overall program cost growth. For the accuracy analysis portion, the mean, 15th, and 85th percentiles of common practice estimates at completion are compared with the same percentiles for distributions generated using the data. The results reveal a trend of substantial underestimation of risks associated with cost overruns. This research addresses the data overload faced by intelligence searchers in government and defense agencies. The study leverages methods from the Cognitive Systems Engineering (CSE) literature to generate insights into the intelligence search work domain. These insights are applied to a supporting concept and requirements for designing and evaluating a human-AI agent team specifically for intelligence search tasks. Domain analysis reveals the dynamic nature of the ‘value structure’, a term that describes the evolving set of criteria governing the intelligence search process. The US Air Force has gone through many aeromedical patient isolation transport system designs. The first designs were developed in response to the Ebola outbreak in 2014 and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. The trade study analysis part of the system engineering design method was used to analyze the historic and current aeromedical patient contamination control transport systems. A trade study is a process that evaluates alternatives based upon various “-ilities”, such as reconfigurability, flexibility, durability, cost, and more, and performs a systematic analysis to aid designers in producing a ‘good’ design alternative given the large set of possible solutions. …

The Department of Defense (DoD) has encouraged the transition to digital engineering, yet there are limited guides for how to transition and there is limited data to show where an organization like a program office can reap the most benefit from the transition. To identify areas where potential benefits may be realized, this thesis compares two Requests for Information (RFIs), one document-based and one model-based, from generation to response. One of the focuses of Corporate Information Management (CIM) initiative in the Department of Defense is the elimination of duplicate automated information systems. This thesis is a case study examination of the selection process in the logistics, transportation, and health functional areas. The case studies were performed through a one-time review of documents relating to system selections in each functional area. A review of strategic information systems planning and systems implementation literature is used to examine the results in the three areas. The thesis concludes with three suggestions for improving the selection process with an emphasis on systems implementation.

This research investigated the perceived Ada and software engineering education needs of software managers throughout the Air Force and provided recommendations to Air Staff for developing the education. Since the Department of Defense mandated all DOD agencies use the Ada programming language for software development, the education of the personnel who have to support the policy has lagged behind the implementation Ada is not a simple language to use and is only fully effective if used with sound software engineering principles.
