Neuro-Symbolic Commonsense Reasoning With Resistance To Data Poisoning: A First-Order Logic And Sub-Symbolic Embeddings Framework, Bryce Shurts, King-Ip Lin
Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations
Commonsense reasoning has long presented a hurdle between conversational agents and their ability to naturally engage with humans in conversation, as the infinitely dimensional nature of a dialogue’s topics presents a significant reasoning challenge in the study of Natural Language Understanding (NLU). Such a system must conceivably be able to act as a generalizable system for evaluating and reasoning about commonsense statements, problems, and queries: in this way, the agent can attempt to quantify the reasonability of a given input. We attempt to address this through the integration of an explainable neuro-symbolic system that leverages Logical Tensor Networks (LTNs) and …

Cignn: Community-Induced Graph Neural Networks, Shi Yin Hong
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Message-passing graph neural networks (MPGNNs) are known to have limitations in their representational power. Recent work proposes subgraph graph neural network (subgraph GNN) models to address these limitations by upgrading the local node representations of MPGNNs to respective subgraph representations. However, existing subgraph GNN models have limited interpretability in capturing inherent local structural dynamics across diverse graph structures. In this work, we present a novel subgraph GNNs framework, termed Community-Induced Graph Neural Network (CiGNN). The key idea of CiGNN is to endow an intuitive interpretability basis for subgraph GNNs by capturing the dynamics of inherent structural community topology in subgraph …

Innovative Rate Design As A Free Market Solution To Climate, Resiliency, And Economic Challenges, Brendan J. Moore
Innovative Rate Design As A Free Market Solution To Climate, Resiliency, And Economic Challenges, Brendan J. Moore
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A century-old problem of electricity rate design is cost-shifting between ratepayers (Wellinghoff, J. & Tong, J., 2015). A much newer cost-shifting example of great and increasing importance happens whenever ratepayer generated “renewable energy” is sold to the grid—all too often, this is accused of being unfairly rewarded (Ritchie, 2016). ProRate resolves both these concerns and ProRate can actually be derived simply from the premise of avoiding “all” cost shifts between ratepayers (Katz, CLEPm Rewards to Arrest Demand Cost-Shifting, 2019; Katz, CLEP5 Rewards to Arrest Energy Cost-Shifting, 2019). Another major problem with the Old Utility Model is the lack of price …

Explainable Machine Learning For The Regulatory Environment: A Case Study In Micro-Droplet Printing, Elaine Harris, Darragh F. Ryan, Gerard M. O'Connor
Articles
Micro-droplet printing remains an invaluable tool for the additive manufacturing industry due to its versatility, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The design and deployment of a disposable micro-droplet dispenser seeks to facilitate a quick and easy way to alternate between different printing materials (such as ink, metals, bio-materials, pharmaceuticals, etc.) without the need for thorough cleaning or separate delivery systems. While this works well in principle, in practice achieving consistent performance between dispensers can prove challenging. This paper aims to tackle this issue through the use of Machine Learning (ML) in order to (1) build a model that predicts dispenser performance from …
Orms And Database Design, Kalim Dumas
Orms And Database Design, Kalim Dumas
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
This thesis explores the relationship between database design and Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) design, investigating how they have evolved together and influenced each other. It addresses a theoretical discussion, a practical implementation, and some observations regarding integrating an ORM into my Senior Design project. My Senior Design project was originally built without the intention of implementing an ORM.
There are a lot of complicated discrepancies between Relational Databases (RDBs) and Object-Oriented Programming Languages (OOPLs), called the Impedance Mismatch Problem. The fact that they are both foundational pillars in software engineering means that one cannot simply change to match the other. ORMs …
