The purpose of this report is to analyze the fire protection systems and features of the Maintenance Shop Building (MSB), which is a two story office and training building on the campus of a large industrial facility in central California. The goal of the fire protection systems and features of the Building is to provide occupants with reasonable assurance of safety from fire. This goal can be met by ensuring that occupants not intimate with the initiation of a fire will be able to safely escape from the Building in the event of the fire.

A Fire Protection Engineering Analysis was performed on TA‐3‐0040, Physics Building at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The goal of the analysis has two parts; first, to examine the buildings fire protection features from a code based prescriptive analysis and second, to examine the building and fire protection features using a performance based design analysis.

This thesis introduces a magnetometry-based information, and signal processing methodology for detecting concealed ferrous objects in vehicle body panels. A prescriptive and performance based analysis was performed on the Warren J Baker Center for Science on the California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo campus. The code based analysis included reviewing the building’s egress components, structural fire protection, fire sprinkler system, and fire alarm system. It was our mission to design and build a bicycle attachment that provides a safe, comfortable, and entertaining ride that can attach to any common bicycle for Rebekah, a 12 year old girl living with cerebral palsy. The aluminum frame bicycle trailer we built motivates Rebekah to exercise with a speaker that plays music when she pedals and ceases the music when she stops pedaling. The speaker and sensor system is controlled by an Adafruit Trinket microcontroller using the Arduino IDE. This report analyzes the fire protection features of the Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus in San Luis Obispo, CA. The prescriptive analysis of the structural fire protection, egress, fire suppression, and fire alarm, detection, and communication systems shows that the building meets the requirements of current codes and standards. The performance based analysis includes simulating design fire scenarios in the atrium using computer modeling (CFAST, FDS) and the results of these models show that the atrium meets the tenability criterion for the calculated evacuation time of occupants.

Clinical Supplies Management, Inc. (CSM) provides clinical trial services to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies by shipping pharmaceuticals to clinics and other patients. In winter 2014, CSM presented a temperature control packaging project to the Cal Poly Senior Project class. As a result, three Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering Students were tasked to design, manufacture, and qualify a shipping container that would maintain ten 10 mL vials between 2-8°C for 96 hours.
