Using carefully arranged electric and magnetic components, we have recently demonstrated that backscattering from otherwise arbitrarily shaped two- and three-dimensional structures can be fully eliminated. Here, first we investigate the possibility of creating self-dual microwave absorbers that may provide advantages compared to typical commercial magnetoelectric absorbers. Next, we demonstrate that the self-duality condition is not limited to homogenous structures and may be extended to effective material properties, opening the door to realistic implementation of these structures at microwave and optical frequencies.

Crystal growth has attained the pinnacle of a point in the current research owing to the requirement of the single crystals in the frontier field of nonlinear optics. Organic crystals exhibit high transparency, high laser damage threshold and de-localized π electron cloud. But they possess weak mechanical stability. As a crucial food crop, potatoes are highly consumed worldwide, while they are also susceptible to being infected by diverse diseases. Early detection and diagnosis can prevent the epidemic of plant diseases and raise crop yields. To this end, this study proposed a weakly-supervised learning approach for the identification of potato plant diseases. The foundation network was applied with the lightweight MobileNet V2, and to enhance the learning ability for minute lesion features, we modified the existing MobileNet-V2 architecture using the fine-tuning approach conducted by transfer learning. The Interactive Planetarium Project will design and build the software framework for connectivity between the Digistar 6 planetarium projection software and the smartphones of all audience members in the Jim and Linda Lee Planetarium. The goal of this project is to make planetarium shows more participatory, add a feature to our planetarium shows that many other universities do not yet have, and create a framework for future students and faculty to build from. To demonstrate our technology, we will make a real-time competitive trivia game able to support 60 concurrent users (number of expected audience members in the planetarium).

III-nitride material (GaN) shows a lot of potential for next-generation power electronics. This material is advantageous due to its wide bandgap, high electron mobility, high thermal and mechanical stability, small form factor, and higher radiation tolerance. The higher radiation tolerance makes the GaN-based devices more attractive for harsh-environment applications, like aerospace, nuclear reactor, and fusion facilities, particle accelerators, and post-detonation environments applications.

Tracking eyes becomes an important component to unleash new ways of human-machine interactions in augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). To make the eye tracking system responsible, eye tracking systems need to operate at a real-time rate (> 30Hz). However, from our experiments, modern gaze tracking algorithms operate at most 5 Hz on mobile processors. In this talk, we present a real-time eye tracking algorithm that operates at 30 Hz on a mobile processor. Our algorithm achieves sub-0.5° gaze accuracy, while requiring only 30K parameters, which is one to two orders of magnitude smaller than state-of-the-art algorithms.

To improve this, we have developed an AI-based predictive pathing optimizer that takes in data regarding the requested route and implements optimal speeds. The modern musician faces a new challenge: how can technology be used to enhance a performance? This thesis documents the development of a Bluetooth remote controller that will aid today’s performing musicians by interacting with a digital display (e.g., an iPad) to flip musical score pages remotely. At its core, while mimicking a Bluetooth pedal (the current industry standard), this device attaches to the musician’s hand. In its pilot stages, the device has been referred to “MBC” (Music Bluetooth Controller).

Automatic extraction of filler morphology (size, orientation, and spatial distribution) in Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images is essential in many applications such as automatic quality inspection in composite manufacturing. Extraction of filler morphology greatly depends on accurate segmentation of fillers (fibers and particles), which is a challenging task due to the overlap of fibers and particles and their obscure presence in SEM images. Intracavity Phase Interferometry (IPI) is a detection technique that exploits the inherent sensitivity of a laser's frequency to the parameters of its cavity. Intracavity interferometry is orders of magnitude more sensitive than its extracavity alternatives. This dissertation improves on previous free-space proof-of-concept designs. By implementing the technique in fiber optics, using optical parametric oscillation, and investigating non-Hermitian quantum mechanics and dispersion tailoring enhancement techniques, IPI has become more applicable and sensitive.
