Current evaluation standards in German higher education institutions (HEIs) most often do not lead to measurable quality improvement. The purpose of this paper is to critically evaluate whether Kaizen can be a useful methodology to improve the quality of teaching on course level and intensify the exchange and discussion between lecturers and learners.

The authors defined waste in higher education and describe proven strategies to reduce waste, from and engineering and technical background, informed by HE administrative perspectives. It is important to categorize waste and then prioritize it because effort should be spent on eliminating the waste that has the greatest potential to improve the efficiency of the entire system. Waste can only be dealt with by someone with the span of control over that waste.

Veterans, through their active service, frequently receive training in highly skilled technical areas. However, they may lack a theoretical background in underlying engineering principles. They also need additional support with the transition from a highly structured military environment to an environment with more ambiguous time constraints and different sorts of responsibilities. An approach to develop entrepreneurial thinking skills in engineering students by integrating online modules into existing courses is described. Eighteen online modules covering a variety of topics will be developed. Developers for the modules are selected by reviewing proposals submitted in response to a broadly distributed request for proposals. Developers undergo extensive training before embarking upon module development. Students will complete each standalone module outside of class hours. Instructors who deploy a module in their course will develop contextual course assignments that reinforce concepts covered in the modules. A portfolio decision analysis strategic planning tool was developed for the Facilities Management Office at the University of Arkansas. The tool provides information to support budget allocation decisions based on their Strategic Planning Project List, project attributes (e.g, seat utilization, scheduling preferences, and sustainability rank), and budget constraints. The projects are evaluated using multiobjective decision analysis. We introduce dynamic value functions, which vary the range of the value measures based on the planning horizon, to evaluate the projects). The starting point of this study was to understand the possible causes of evaluation system change in a military academic environment. Faculty course portfolios are a valuable medium for documenting and making visible the serious intellectual work of teaching. Developing a faculty course portfolio follows the same process one uses to explore a research question. Faculty members inquire, analyze, and document their teaching practices and the resulting student learning and then make the results accessible for use, review, and assessment by one’s peers. In this article, we introduce four types of electronic course portfolios that sponsor different forms of inquiry into student learning.
