Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke Jan 1993

Reliability Trend Analyses With Statistical Confidence Limits Using The Luke Reliability Trend Chart, Stephen R. Luke

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In electronic systems, it is interesting to understand exactly how the reliability is changing with time. Dynamic performance changes when a system passes from infant mortality stage into useful life phase and when the system passes from useful life phase into wearout phase. Dynamic performance also changes when the system is redesigned or when the system is acted on by a number of other outside forces such as a change in maintenance policy, escalation of alignment problems, or a change in training program. It is important to know when a system is changing dynamically in order to assess design, policy …

Developing Cmmca Flight Profiles For Cruise Missile Tracking, Andrew C. Hachman Mar 1992

Developing Cmmca Flight Profiles For Cruise Missile Tracking, Andrew C. Hachman

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force has recently acquired two aircraft dedicated for cruise missile tracking. These aircraft, known as the Cruise Missile Mission Control Aircraft (CMMCA), are responsible for collecting data from the missile and United States. Due to tracking and positively controlling the missile during live fire testing over the western the limited tracking radar range and the flight characteristics of the CMMCA, tracking cruise missiles through complex maneuvers is not always possible. A FORTRAN optimization, based on flight simulation and optimal control theory, was written in a prior thesis effort in order to determine optimal CMMCA flight profiles for tracking …

Factors Affecting Capacity Utilization In Industries: Hierarchical Analysis, M Victor Dec 1991

Factors Affecting Capacity Utilization In Industries: Hierarchical Analysis, M Victor

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

This paper provides a hierarchical analysis of the factors affecting capacity utilization in Tanzanian industries. Several factors were identified and sent to randomly selected industries in Tanzania for ranking. The collected data was summarized and analyzed. The analysis made use of a known procedure, the 'Analytical Hierarchy Process' (AHP). The final results shows a ranking of the factors, on various hierarchical levels as to their percentage contribution in lowering the capacity utilization.

Composite Stock Cutting Through Simulated Annealing, Pipatpong Poshyanonda, Cihan H. Dagli Sep 1991

Composite Stock Cutting Through Simulated Annealing, Pipatpong Poshyanonda, Cihan H. Dagli

Computer Science Technical Reports

This paper explores the use of Simulated Annealing as an optimization technique for the problem Composite Material Stock Cutting. The shapes are not constrained to be convex polygons or even regular shapes. However, due to the composite nature of the material, the orientation of the shapes on the stock is restricted. For placements of various shapes, we show how to determine a cost function, annealing parameters, and performance.

A Robust Approach To Human-Computer Interface Design Using The Taguchi Method, Billie Mitchell Reed Jul 1991

A Robust Approach To Human-Computer Interface Design Using The Taguchi Method, Billie Mitchell Reed

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The application of Dr. Genichi Taguchi's approach for design optimization, called Robust Design, to the design of human-computer interface software is investigated. The Taguchi Method is used to select a near optimum set of interface design alternatives to improve user acceptance of the resulting interface software product with minimum sensitivity to uncontrollable noise caused by human behavioral characteristics.

Design alternatives for interaction with personal micro-computers are identified. Several important and representative alternatives are chosen as design parameters for the Taguchi matrix experiment. A noise field with three human behavioral characteristics as noise factors were chosen as a representative noise array. …

Comparison Of Digital Controllers Used In Magnetic Suspension And Balance Systems, William A. Kilgore Dec 1990

Comparison Of Digital Controllers Used In Magnetic Suspension And Balance Systems, William A. Kilgore

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Dynamic systems that were once controlled by analog circuits are now controlled by digital computers. Presented is a comparison of the digital controllers presently used with magnetic suspension and balance systems. The overall responses of the systems are compared using a computer simulation of the magnetic suspension and balance system and the digital controllers. The comparisons include responses to both simulated force and position inputs. A preferred digital controller is determined from the simulated responses.

Assessment Of Squirrel-Caused Power Outages, J. Chris Hamilton, Ron J. Johnson, Ronald M. Case, Michael W. Riley Jan 1989

Assessment Of Squirrel-Caused Power Outages, J. Chris Hamilton, Ron J. Johnson, Ronald M. Case, Michael W. Riley

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Squirrel-caused power outages in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, were evaluated by examining company power outage reports and by consulting with power company representatives. Reports showed that squirrel-caused outages at pole-mounted transformers were most prevalent during May, June, and October (48% of total) and between 1 and 4 h after sunrise (38%), patterns that coincide with squirrel dispersal or morning activity periods. In Lincoln, 1980 and 1981, squirrels caused 177 outages per year, which was 24% of all outages and 90% of animal-caused outages. Estimated minimum annual costs were $23 364 for repairs, public relations, and lost revenue while meters were …

Engineer Education: Disciplinary Preferences In The Faculty Of Engineering University Of Dar Es Salaam, S Mosha Dec 1984

Engineer Education: Disciplinary Preferences In The Faculty Of Engineering University Of Dar Es Salaam, S Mosha

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Most practising engineers can hardly recall the days they had to make up their minds on whether engineering was their chosen career. This decision may have been approached with ignorance and very high expectations. Later after registering in a Faculty of Engineering the freshman was given a chance to choose a department; sometimes this had already been done for him by his sponsors so all he had to do was to walk into the preselected department.

A generation later, University entrants are faced with a similar predicament. This paper high-lights the procedures involved and proceeds to recommend the necessary fundamental …

Performance Theorems For The Resource Scheduling Functions Of A Multiprocessing System, George Arthur Nicol Jan 1979

Performance Theorems For The Resource Scheduling Functions Of A Multiprocessing System, George Arthur Nicol

Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, a multiprocess scheduling model is developed and a set of performance theorems is constructed for the set of scheduling functions associated with the model. Each theorem describes the conditions under which a scheduling function exhibits a particular type of performance.

This volume is a collection of refereed papers presented at the Fifth Annual UMR-DNR Conference on Energy held at the University of Missouri--Rolla on the dates of October 10 - 12, 1978.

Guided by the President's goal of energy independence by 1980, the UMR-DNR Conference on Energy organized in 1974 with the purpose of providing social scientists, scientists and engineers a means for rapid communication of their most recent research results in the field of energy and to offer solutions to the energy related problems of local government, business, industry and the general public. Since that time, there has been …

Emerson Electric -- Application And Results Of An Electric Energy Audit, Bruce E. Jacobs, Yildirim Omurtag

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

The objective of the study was to examine the electrical usage of an Emerson division located in the Northeast, provide a method of managing the usage and make recommendations for conservation. Both past and present usage were examined in an attempt to determine if potential savings might be realized by a reduction in energy and peak demand. Discussion will include an electrical energy tracking mechanism, ratios and indicators, use of rate consultants, state sales tax exemption clauses, and sample calculations of cost improvements on demand charges.
