Advancing Radiation Shielding For Human Space Exploration, Bryan Trejo, Lea Scott, Eduardo Farfan
Advancing Radiation Shielding For Human Space Exploration, Bryan Trejo, Lea Scott, Eduardo Farfan
Symposium of Student Scholars
Beyond the safety of the Earth's magnetic field, out into the treacherous reaches of space, lies a harsh environment of radiation. This study examines radiation shielding strategies for crewed spacecraft operating in various environments, including Mars transit and deep space. Within these environments, ionizing radiation remains a critical challenge to long-duration, crewed space travel. Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR), high-energy protons and heavy nuclei originating outside our solar system, as well as Solar Particle Events (SPE), highly energetic protons ejected continuously during the 11-year solar cycle, are all analyzed in their unique interactions with spacecraft material and biological tissues. Shielding to …
Nuclear Energy: The Key To Sustainable Power For Ai And Emerging Technologies, Joshua Luke Ponsell, James Zurawski, Eli Musgrave, Johnny Demont, Eduardo B. Farfan
Nuclear Energy: The Key To Sustainable Power For Ai And Emerging Technologies, Joshua Luke Ponsell, James Zurawski, Eli Musgrave, Johnny Demont, Eduardo B. Farfan
Symposium of Student Scholars
Skeptics question whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be powered sustainably. Nuclear may just be the best option. AI is transforming various spaces, from cybersecurity to accessibility, by enhancing the detection and prevention of fraud and phishing attacks to improving real-time services like subtitle generation, and supporting language translation. AI's impact also extends to applications like handwriting and speech recognition, streamlining processes and increasing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life, the increasing demand for its computational power raises concerns about energy consumption. By researching datacenter power demands empirically and comparing nuclear options as opposed …
Molecular Dynamics Study For Tritium Adsorption On Novel Materials, Jason Viscardi, Benjamin Robinson, Asher Flanagan
Molecular Dynamics Study For Tritium Adsorption On Novel Materials, Jason Viscardi, Benjamin Robinson, Asher Flanagan
Symposium of Student Scholars
In this study, novel materials will be researched, and their potential uses for tritium control. 12 studies have been collected on various materials that give a solid foundation for future research that will be conducted regarding tritium control. All these studies used molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) to generate results. The first paper found from a university in Crete, Greece discussed pillared graphene to store hydrogen in a novel 3D carbon nanostructure in which pore size and surface area can be adjusted to suit the need. This was the first of several studies that aim to arrange the graphene in such …
Sterilizing Masks With Uvc Light, Christopher Focht
Sterilizing Masks With Uvc Light, Christopher Focht
Symposium of Student Scholars
This experiment focused on the construction and testing of a UVC light box and the treatment of facemasks with UVC light. Exposure rates were calculated and measured to ensure efficacy of the light box. Masks were contaminated with bacteria and exposed for set time intervals, after which the bacteria were collected, cultured, and counted. Early results show that the masks in the box had no bacteria survive past ten seconds. This research is ongoing with different bacteria strains and mask types.

Senior Design Project For Engineers
This details the progress of the ENERCON pump replacement project as completed by the Kennesaw State University interdisciplinary senior design group. This project is a two-semester capstone effort for the engineering program at Southern Polytechnic School of Engineering, overseen by Dr. McFall during Fall 2020 and Dr. Khalid during Spring 2021 semesters. The 2020-2021 KSU Interdisciplinary Senior Design team was tasked with completing an Engineering Change Package (ECP) for existing vacuum pumps at ENERCON Station. The mechanical, electrical, and civil students worked together, performing evaluations on existing plant systems to ensure the plant could support the new vacuum pumps. By …
