Journal of Electrochemistry
Porous nano-silicon (Si) was prepared by acid etching Al-Si alloy powder method, and used as an active material for fabricating a grapene/porous nano-Si electrode. The results of SEM and TEM measurements indicated that porous nano-Si powder was uniformly mixed with graphene by emulsification dispersion-ultrasonication method. As an anode for lithium ion battery, the graphene/porous nano-Si electrode presented relatively high performance in 1 mol•L-1LiPF6/EC:DMC = 1:1(by volume) + 1.5% (by mass) VC solution. At the charge and discharge current densities of 0.5A•g-1, the first discharge capacity was 1768.6mAh•g-1with coulombic efficiency of 68.3%. The discharge capacity …
Large-Scale Graphene Film Deposition For Monolithic Device Fabrication, Khaled Al-Shurman
Large-Scale Graphene Film Deposition For Monolithic Device Fabrication, Khaled Al-Shurman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Since 1958, the concept of integrated circuit (IC) has achieved great technological developments and helped in shrinking electronic devices. Nowadays, an IC consists of more than a million of compacted transistors.
The majority of current ICs use silicon as a semiconductor material. According to Moore's law, the number of transistors built-in on a microchip can be double every two years. However, silicon device manufacturing reaches its physical limits. To explain, there is a new trend to shrinking circuitry to seven nanometers where a lot of unknown quantum effects such as tunneling effect can not be controlled. Hence, there is an …
Hexagonal Boron Nitride : Ubiquitous Layered Dielectric For Two-Dimensional Electronics, Nikhil Jain
Hexagonal Boron Nitride : Ubiquitous Layered Dielectric For Two-Dimensional Electronics, Nikhil Jain
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a layer-structured dielectric with very similar crystalline lattice to that of graphene, has been studied as a ubiquitous dielectric for two-dimensional electronics. While 2D materials may lead to future platform for electronics, traditional thin-film dielectrics (e.g., various oxides) make highly invasive interface with graphene. Multiple key roles of h-BN in graphene electronics are explored in this thesis. 2D graphene/h-BN heterostructures are designed and implemented in diverse configurations in which h-BN is evaluated as a supporting substrate, a gate dielectric, a passivation layer, or an interposing barrier in “3D graphene” superlattice. First, CVD-grown graphene on h-BN substrate …

Carbon 1d/2d Nanoelectronics : Integration And Device Applications, Zhaoying Hu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Graphene is a one-atom thick planar monolayer of sp2-bonded carbon atoms organized in a hexagonal crystal lattice. A single walled carbon nanotube (CNT) can be thought of as a graphene sheet rolled up into a seamless hollow cylinder with extremely high length-to-diameter ratio. Their ultra-thin body, large surface area, and exceptional electronic, optical and mechanical properties make these low-dimensional carbon materials ideal candidates for electronic applications. However, adopting low-dimensional carbon materials into semiconductor industry faces significant material and integration challenges. There is an urgent need for research at fundamental and applicative levels to find a roadmap for carbon nanomaterial to …

Boosting Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu Zhang, Jin-Song Hu, Wen-Jie Jiang, Lin Guo, Zi-Dong Wei, Li-Jun Wan
Journal of Electrochemistry
Developing low-cost catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has recently attracted much attention because the sluggish ORR currently limits the performance and commercialization of fuel cells and metal-air batteries as well. Nitrogen doped carbon materials have been considered as a promising candidate for the replacement of high-cost and scarce Pt-based catalysts although their electrocatalytic activity still needs to be much improved. In this work, an improved nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon nanotubes composite (N-rGO/CNT) was developed as an efficient ORR electrocatalyst. It was found that the ORR activity of N-rGO/CNT composite could be significantly enhanced by introducing iron in …

Transport And Optical Properties Of Low-Dimensional Complex Systems, Andrii Iurov
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Over the last five years of my research work, I, my research was mainly concerned with certain crucial tunneling, transport and optical properties of novel low-dimensional graphitic and carbon-based materials as well as topological insulators. Both single-electron and many-body problems were addressed. We investigated the Dirac electrons transmission through a potential barrier in the presence of circularly polarized light. An anomalous photon-assisted enhanced transmission is predicted and explained in a comparison with the well-known Klein paradox. It is demonstrated that the perfect transmission for nearly-head-on collision in an infinite graphene is suppressed in gapped dressed states of electrons, which is …
Nanoscale Manipulation Of Pristine And Functionalized Freestanding Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Matthew Ackerman
Nanoscale Manipulation Of Pristine And Functionalized Freestanding Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Matthew Ackerman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past ten years the 2D material graphene has attracted an enourmous amount of attention from researchers from across diciplines and all over the world. Many of its outstanding electronic properties are present only when it is not interacting with a substrate but is instead freestanding. In this work I demonstrate that pristine and functionalized freestanding graphene can be imaged using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and that imaging a flexible 2D surface is fundamentally different from imaging a bulk material due to the attraction between the STM tip and the sample. This attraction can be used to manipulate …

Fabrication And Electrochemical Properties Of Graphene-Zno Nanocomposite, Chuan-Ling Men, Wan Wang, Jun Cao
Journal of Electrochemistry
In this work, the graphene-ZnO nanocomposite was successfully synthesized through a one-step solvothermal approach, using ethylene glycol as the solvent and reducing agent. The ZnO particles could be attached to the surfaces and edges of graphene sheet. The electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite was investigated by performing cyclic voltammetry, A.C. impedance and chronopotentiometry tests in 6 mol·L-1 KOH. The results showed that the graphene-ZnO nanocomposite exhibited a nice electrochemical specific capacitance of 115 F·g-1 determined in cyclic voltammetry test, or 71 F·g-1 evaluated in chronopotentiometry test and good reversible charge/discharge behavior.

Carbon Allotrope Dependence On Temperature And Pressure During Thermal Decomposition Of Silicon Carbide, Munson J. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Bulk CNT and graphene films form on SiC using a metal-catalyst-free thermal decomposition approach. In this work, the background vacuum pressure and temperature used in the decomposition process are varied to investigate their impact on the type and quality of carbon allotrope formed on the SiC substrate. The carbon nanostructure growth is performed using two approaches, both of which involve intense heating (1400-1700°C) of SiC under moderate vacuum conditions (0.01 - 0.00001 Torr). The first growth method uses a conventional graphite resistance furnace capable of annealing waferscale samples over 1700°C under vacuum. Using this approach, post-growth characterization is performed using …

Growth And Characterization Of Graphene On Cuni Substrates, Parul Tyagi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Graphene is a single layer of sp2 bonded carbon atoms that crystallizes in the honeycomb structure. Because of its true two-dimensional structure, it has very unique electrical properties, including a very high carrier mobility that is symmetric for holes and electrons. To realize these unique properties, it is important to develop a method for growing graphene films with uniform thickness and low defect density. One of the most popular methods of growth is by chemical vapor deposition on Cu substrates, because it is self-limited. However many applications require the growth of graphene films that are more than one atomic layer …

In the nanotechnology field, some existing materials and applications are harmful to the environment, not efficient for certain tasks, or too expensive to be fully utilized. Graphene is a strong and cheap material that can be used to improve current nanotechnologies for more practical uses in society. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is an orientation of graphene layers that exhibit different properties than regular bilayer graphene. It is made by placing a single layer of graphene on top of another at an angle with respect to the other lattice orientation. Understanding the characteristics of TBG is important to uncover more physics …

Carbon nanotubes and graphene have been extensively studied for their excellent properties. As research on carbon expands, two major issues face the scientific community: (i) Expanding the scale of synthesis and (ii) Integration of different carbon structures for improved functionality. While significant advancements have been made in large-scale synthesis, room for improvement remains. As the scale of production increases, issues such as time, cost and energy that may otherwise not be very significant, begin to play greater roles. Thus, in order to effectively transition from laboratory prototypes to industrial products, a synthesis method that can address these issues is strongly …

Metal–semiconductor (M–S) junctions are important components in many semiconductor devices, and there is growing interest in realizing high quality M–S contacts that are optically transparent. In this paper, we present our investigations into the characteristics of M–S junction in a semiconducting ZnO nanowire that was directly grown on a multilayer graphene film (MGF). The synthesized nanowires were fabricated into two-terminal devices with MGF as one contact and Al as the other contact. By comparison with devices employing Al contacts at both ends, the nanowire resistivity and specific contact resistivity of the MGF–nanowire contact can be extracted. The extracted specific contact …

Nanowire-Graphene Hybrids For Li-Ion Insertion, Philip A. Morton, Mohammad Arif I. Shuvo, Yirong Lin
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Lithium ion batteries are one of the most popular energy storage devices due to its high energy density. However, their performance is hindered by the limited surface area of the anode. This research focuses on the use of graphene nanowire hybrids and their performance as anode material. These hybrid structures have a greater surface area then graphite, the most common anode material. Greater surface area will enhance lithium ion insertion, and thus improve battery performance. The graphene oxide (GO) will be synthesized using the Hummer’s plus method. The GO will be sonicated and reduced in an argon furnace to form …

SEM and TEM results showed that nanosized anatase TiO2 (about 5~10 nm) were dispersed uniformly on the surface of the GNs. The TiO2/GNs composite showed excellent rate and cycling performance: A stable charge capacity of 169.5 mAh·g-1 was obtained at 30C, and can restore to 241.7 mAh·g-1 while current went back to 1C. The stable charge capacity of TiO2/GNs nanocomposite electrode up to 201.9 mAh·g-1 was achieved at 10C in the first cycle, and could be …
Use Of Ultra High Vacuum Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition For Graphene Fabrication, Shannen Adcock
Use Of Ultra High Vacuum Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition For Graphene Fabrication, Shannen Adcock
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Graphene, what some are terming the "new silicon", has the possibility of revolutionizing technology through nanoscale design processes. Fabrication of graphene for device processing is limited largely by the temperatures used in conventional deposition. High temperatures are detrimental to device design where many different materials may be present. For this reason, graphene synthesis at low temperatures using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is the subject of much research. In this thesis, a tool for ultra-high vacuum plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (UHV-PECVD) and accompanying subsystems, such as control systems and alarms, are designed and implemented to be used in future graphene growths. …

Measurement Of Electron Spin Transport In Graphene On 6h-Silicon Carbide(0001), Joseph Abel
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The focus of this thesis is to demonstrate the potential of wafer scale graphene spintronics. Graphene is a single atomic layer of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that has high carrier mobilities, making it a desirable material for future nanoscale electronic devices. The vision of spintronics is to utilize the spin of the electron to produce novel high-speed low power consuming devices. Materials with long spin relaxation times and spin diffusion lengths are needed to realize these goals. Graphene is an ideal material as it meets these requirements and is amenable to planar device geometries.
The Influence Of Copper Substrate Orientation On Graphene Growth, Zachary Robert Robinson
The Influence Of Copper Substrate Orientation On Graphene Growth, Zachary Robert Robinson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation is focused on determining the influence of the copper substrate on graphene grown by \ac{CVD}. Graphene, which can be grown in single atomic layers on copper substrates, has potential applications in future electronic devices. One of the key issues for the use of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition for device applications is the influence of defects on the transport properties of the graphene. For instance, growth on metal foil substrates results in multi-domain graphene growth because the foil substrates themselves have a variety of different surface terminations. Therefore, they don't serve as a very good template for …

Study Of The Dielectric Function Of Graphene From Spectroscopic Ellipsometry And Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, Florence Joan Nelson
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
For more than 60 years, semiconductor research has been advancing up the periodic table. The first transistor was made from germanium. This later gave way to silicon-based devices due to the latter's ability to form an excellent interface with thermally-grown oxide. Now for the last ~8 years, the focus has moved up one more row to carbon for post-CMOS devices in order to comply with the scaling limitations of Moore's law. However, for each of these, the measurements of film properties and dimensions have always been required for technological applications. These measurement methods often incorporate the use of light or …

Effects Of Low Energy E-Beam Irradiation On Graphene And Graphene Field Effect Transistors And Raman Metrology Of Graphene On Split Gate Test Structures, Gayathri Rao
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Apart from its compelling performance in conventional nanoelectronic device geometries, graphene is an appropriate candidate to study certain interesting phenomenon (e.g. the Veselago lens effect) predicted on the basis of its linear electron dispersion relation. A key requirement for the observation of such phenomenon in graphene and for its use in conventional field-effect transistor (FET) devices is the need to minimize defects such as consisting of - or resulting from - adsorbates and lattice non-uniformities, and reduce deleterious substrate effects. Consequently the investigation of the origin and interaction of defects in the graphene lattice is essential to improve and tailor …

Graphene-Based Interconnects : Electrical Performance And Reliability, Tianhua Yu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
According to the ITRS Roadmap, on-chip interconnects wire width and current density will reach 22 nm and 5.8×106 A/cm2 in 2020, respectively. The electrical resistivity of Cu increases with scaled critical dimensions due to exacerbated carrier scattering at grain boundaries and interfaces, resulting in signal speed degradation. Electronmigration (EM)-related failure due to intensified current distribution posts extra limits to ultra-scaled systems. Innovative interconnect solutions are needed to tackle performance and scaling challenges.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained increased interest in dynamic atomic force microscopy (dAFM) as sharp, flexible, conducting, nonreactive tips for high-resolution imaging, oxidation lithography, and electrostatic force microscopy. By means of theory and experiments we lay out a map of several distinct tapping mode AFM oscillation states for CNT tipped AFM cantilevers: namely, noncontact attractive regime oscillation, intermittent contact with CNT slipping or pinning, or permanent contact with the CNT in point or line contact with the surface while the cantilever oscillates with large amplitude. Each state represents fundamentally different origins of CNT-surface interactions, CNT tip-substrate dissipation, and phase contrast …
