Enhanced Stability Of A Dewetting Thin Liquid Film In A Single-Frequency Vibration Field, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Dynamics of a thin dewetting liquid film on a vertically oscillating substrate is considered. We assume moderate vibration frequency and large (compared to the mean film thickness) vibration amplitude. Using the lubrication approximation and the averaging method, we formulate the coupled sets of equations governing the pulsatile and the averaged fluid flows in the film, and then derive the nonlinear amplitude equation for the averaged film thickness. We show that there exists a window in the frequency-amplitude domain where the parametric and shear-flow instabilities of the pulsatile flow do not emerge. As a consequence, in this window the averaged description …

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner Jan 2008

Morphologies And Kinetics Of A Dewetting Ultrathin Solid Film, Mikhail Khenner

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The surface evolution model based on geometric partial differential equation is used to numerically study the kinetics of dewetting and dynamic morphologies for the localized pinhole defect in the surface of the ultrathin solid film with the strongly anisotropic surface energy. Depending on parameters such as the initial depth and width of the pinole, the strength of the attractive substrate potential and the strength of the surface energy anisotropy, the pinhole may either extend to the substrate and thus rupture the film, or evolve to the quasiequilibrium shape while the rest of the film surface undergoes phase separation into a …

Enhanced Blocking Temperature And Isothermal Control Of Hysteresis Loop Shifts In Co/Nio/[Co/Pt] Heterostructures With Orthogonal Easy Axes, A. Baruth, Shireen Adenwalla Jan 2008

Enhanced Blocking Temperature And Isothermal Control Of Hysteresis Loop Shifts In Co/Nio/[Co/Pt] Heterostructures With Orthogonal Easy Axes, A. Baruth, Shireen Adenwalla

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Heterostructures of Co 4 nm/NiO 1.1 nm/[Co 0.4 nm/Pt 0.6 nm] with mutually orthogonal easy axes allow for isothermal tuning of the hysteresis loop shifts along the applied field axis at room temperature, as well as displaying a greatly enhanced blocking temperature. The loop shifts can be varied up to 35 Oe through the application of moderate dc magnetic fields of 3 kOe. The presence of the [Co/Pt] multilayer with perpendicular anisotropy is responsible for a significant enhancement of the blocking temperature. For this thickness of NiO, the blocking temperature is expected to be well below 50 K, in contrast …

A Low-Temperature Specific Heat Study Of Giant Dielectric Constant Materials, C. P. Sun, Jianjun Liu, J.-Y. Lin, Chun-Gang Duan, Wao-Ning Mei, H. D. Yang Jan 2008

A Low-Temperature Specific Heat Study Of Giant Dielectric Constant Materials, C. P. Sun, Jianjun Liu, J.-Y. Lin, Chun-Gang Duan, Wao-Ning Mei, H. D. Yang

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

A low-temperature specific heat study has been performed on the insulating giant dielectric constant material CaCu3Ti4O12 and two related compounds, Bi2/3Cu3Ti4O12 and La0.5Na0.5Cu3Ti4O12, from 0.6 to 10 K. From analyzing the specific heat data in a very low-temperature range, 0.6–1.5 K, and moderately low-temperature range, 1.5–5 K, in addition to the expected Debye terms, we observed significant contributions originating from the linear and Einstein terms, which we attributed as the manifestation of low-lying elementary excitations due to lattice …

Nano Quasicrystal Formation And Local Atomic Structure In Zr––Pd And Zr––Pt Binary Metallic Glasses, Junji Saida, Takashi Sanada, Shigeo Sato, Muneyuki Imafuku, Chunfei Li, Akihisa Inoue

Center for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication Publications and Presentations

Formation of the nanoscale icosahedral quasicrystalline phase (I-phase) in the melt-spun Zr70Pd30 and Zr80Pt20 binary metallic glasses were reported. Local atomic structure in the glassy and quasicrystal (QC)-formed states were also analyzed by XRD and EXAFS measurements in order to investigate the formation mechanism of QC phase. The distorted icosahedral-like local structure can be identified around Zr atom in the Zr70Pd30 metallic glass. In the QC formation process, a change of local environment around Zr is detected, in which the approximately one Zr atom substitutes for one Pd atom. In contrast, …

Polaron And Phonon Properties In Proton Intercalated Amorphous Tungsten Oxide Thin Films, M. Saenger, T. Hoing, Brian W. Robertson, R. Billa, Tino Hofmann, Eva Schubert, Mathias Schubert

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

We report on the evolution of the polaron and phonon mode properties in amorphous tungsten oxide thin films measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the infrared to ultraviolet spectral regions as a function of the intercalated proton density. A parametric physical model dielectric function is presented, which excellently describes the ellipsometry data over a large intercalated charge-density range. Upon increased amounts of intercalated charge we observe a strong increase in the polaron absorption in the visible spectral range, a decrease in the infrared W–O bond polarity, and an increase in the W=O bond polarity. Our findings support the oxygen-extraction model as …

Geometrical Interpretation And Simulation Of Holz Patterns, Xingzhong Li Jan 2008

Geometrical Interpretation And Simulation Of Holz Patterns, Xingzhong Li

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Higher-order Laue zone (HOLZ) pattern is very useful in measurement of crystalline lattice parameters, strain and composition variation in a small area of sample. Bloch dynamical theory on convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED), including the formation of HOLZ lines, has been well developed and documented in Ref. and references therein. Although CBED patterns and included HOLZ lines are best modeled using a dynamical formulation, models based on a geometrical interpretation for the HOLZ-line positions have remained in widespread use because of their simplicity. Moreover, the geometrical interpretation is helpful to understand the formation of HOLZ lines for beginners. The geometrical interpretation …

Control Of The Nanoscale Crystallinity And Phase Separation In Polymer Solar Cells, Chih-Wei Chu, Hoichang Yang, Wei-Jen Hou, Jinsong Huang, Gang Li, Yang Yang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were performed on bulk heterojunction regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RR-P3HT) [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl esters spin-cast films with different film processing conditions to correlate the crystalline nanostructure of P3HT with the corresponding solar cell performance. The increase in long wavelength absorption for solvent annealed films is related to highly conjugated crystal structure of RR-P3HT phase-separated in the active layer. Upon thermal annealing, the solvent annealed 50-nm-thick device shows high solar cell performance with fill factor up to 73% and power conversion efficiency of 3.80%.

Role Of Covalent Fe-As Bonding In The Magnetic Moment Formation And Exchange Mechanisms In Iron-Pnictide Superconductors, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov Jan 2008

Role Of Covalent Fe-As Bonding In The Magnetic Moment Formation And Exchange Mechanisms In Iron-Pnictide Superconductors, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Vladimir P. Antropov

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The electronic origin of the huge magnetostructural effect in layered Fe-As compounds is elucidated using LiFeAs as a prototype. The crucial feature of these materials is the strong covalent bonding between Fe and As, which tends to suppress the exchange splitting. The bonding-antibonding splitting is very sensitive to the distance between Fe and As nuclei. We argue that the fragile interplay between bonding and magnetism is universal for this family of compounds. The exchange interaction is analyzed in real space, along with its correlation with covalency and doping. The range of interaction and itinerancy increase as the Fe-As distance is …

A New Method Of Synthesizing Black Birnessite Nanoparticles: From Brown To Black Birnessite With Nanostructures, Shizhi Qian, Marcos A. Cheney, Pradip K. Bhowmik, Sang W. Joo, Wensheng Hou, Joseph M. Okoh Jan 2008

Okoh

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A new method for preparing black birnessite nanoparticles is introduced. The initial synthesis process resembles the classical McKenzie method of preparing brown birnessite except for slower cooling and closing the system from the ambient air. Subsequent process, including wet-aging at 7◦C for 48 hours, overnight freezing, and lyophilization, is shown to convert the brown birnessite into black birnessite with complex nanomorphology with folded sheets and spirals. Characterization of the product is performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 adsorption (BET) techniques. Wet-aging and lyophilization times are shown to …

Development Of Nanostructure Based Corrosion-Barrier Coatings On Steel For Transmutation Applications, Biswajit Das Jan 2008

Development Of Nanostructure Based Corrosion-Barrier Coatings On Steel For Transmutation Applications, Biswajit Das

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

Advanced transmutation systems require structural materials that are able to withstand high neutron fluxes, high thermal cycling, and high resistance to chemical corrosion. The current candidate materials for such structures are ferritic and ferritic-martensitic steels due to their strong resistance to swelling, good microstructural stability under irradiation, and the retention of adequate ductility at typical reactor operating temperatures.

In parallel, lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) has emerged as a potential spallation target material for efficient production of neutrons, as well as a coolant in the accelerator system. While LBE has excellent properties as a nuclear coolant, it is also highly corrosive to …

Emergent Behavior In Massively-Deployed Sensor Networks, Ekaterina Shurkova, Ruzana Ishak, Stephan Olariu, Shaharuddin Salleh

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The phenomenal advances in MEMS and nanotechnology make it feasible to build small devices, referred to as sensors that are able to sense, compute and communicate over small distances. The massive deployment of these small devices raises the fascinating question of whether or not the sensors, as a collectivity, will display emergent behavior, just as living organisms do. In this work we report on a recent effort intended to observe emerging behavior of large groups of sensor nodes, like living cells demonstrate. Imagine a massive deployment of sensors that can be in two states "red" and "blue". At deployment time …

Efficient Corona Training Protocols For Sensor Networks, Alan A. Bertossi, Stephan Olariu, Cristina M. Pinotti Jan 2008

Efficient Corona Training Protocols For Sensor Networks, Alan A. Bertossi, Stephan Olariu, Cristina M. Pinotti

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Phenomenal advances in nano-technology and packaging have made it possible to develop miniaturized low-power devices that integrate sensing, special-purpose computing, and wireless communications capabilities. It is expected that these small devices, referred to as sensors, will be mass-produced and deployed, making their production cost negligible. Due to their small form factor and modest non-renewable energy budget, individual sensors are not expected to be GPS-enabled. Moreover, in most applications, exact geographic location is not necessary, and all that the individual sensors need is a coarse-grain location awareness. The task of acquiring such a coarse-grain location awareness is referred to as training. …
