A new design idea for a compact, autonomous, completely explosive pulsed power system is proposed. The system is based on the shock wave ferromagnetic generator (FMG) as a primary power source and a loop magnetic flux compression generator (LFCG) as a pulsed power amplifier. The FMG primary power source utilizes the effect of transverse shock wave demagnetization of Nd2Fe14B high-energy hard ferromagnets to produce the seed current. Results are presented of an experimental study and digital simulation of operation of the FMG-LFCG system

A new application of the effect of transverse-shock-wave demagnetization of Nd2Fe14B high-energy hard ferromagnets for powering an explosive-driven helical flux compression generator (FCG) is proposed. The novel FCG seeding system based on a compact transverse shock-wave ferromagnetic generator (FMG) containing a 200-cm3 Nd2Fe14B energy-carrying element and a 12 g high explosive charge was designed, constructed, and tested. The proposed design is based on the idea that the wide coaxial single-turn pulse-generating coil of the FMG can simultaneously serve as a seed coil for the FCG. The coaxial single-turn pulse-generating coil of the FMG was wound on the initial part of …

Rubble piles created following the collapse of a building in a combat situation can significantly impact mission accomplishment, particularly in the area of movement and maneuver. Rubble characteristics must be known, for example, in order to predict the ability of a vehicle to override the collateral damage from weapon effects in urban areas. Two types of models are developed: a first-order model and a first-principles-based model. In both models, we assume complete rubblization of the building and develop a rubble profile model using the size and composition of the collapsed structure to predict the rubble volume. In both cases, this …

A new concept for constructing compact autonomous pulsed power systems is presented. This concept utilizes a high-voltage explosive-driven shock-wave ferromagnetic generator (FMG) as a charging source for capacitive energy storage. It has been experimentally demonstrated that miniature FMGs (22-25 cm³ in size and 84-95 g in mass) developed for these experiments can be successfully used to charge capacitor banks. The FMGs, containing Nd₂Fe₁₄B energy-carrying elements, provided pulsed powers of 35-45 kW in times ranging from 10 to 15 µs. A methodology was developed for digital simulation of the operation of the transverse FMG. Experimental results that were obtained are in …

An Analysis And Policy Implications Of Comfort Levels Of Diverse Constituents With Reported Units For Blast Vibrations And Limits: Closing The Communication Gap, Braden Lusk

Doctoral Dissertations

"Differences exist between public perception of construction blasting and quarry blasting. In general, people are able to tolerate short term inconveniences much better than long term ones. Quarries and other long term mining operations utilizing blasting are coming under increasing public and legislative pressure in the United States. The question being posed for the blasting industry is, "Has our past haste in adopting complex scientific scales and units been detrimental to us?" In other words, are the most palatable things being reported? The goal of this dissertation is to determine whether current units create an atmosphere of discomfort among neighbors …

Transverse Explosive Shock-Wave Compression Of Nd₂Fe₁₄B High-Energy Hard Ferromagnets: Induced Magnetic Phase Transition, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Evgueni F. Talantsev, Jason Baird, Larry L. Altgilbers, Allen H. Stults

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Investigations of the magnetic phase state of Nd2Fe14B high-energy hard ferromagnets under the action of an explosive shock wave traveling across the magnetization vector, M, have been performed. We demonstrate that the transverse shock-wave compression of an Nd2Fe14B hard ferromagnet with pressure at the shock wave front of P = 22.3 GPa causes a hard ferromagnet — to — weak magnet phase transition. Due to this phase transition, the magnetostatic energy stored for an indefinite period of time in the Nd2Fe14B ferromagnet is released within a short time interval and can be transformed into pulsed primary power. Based on this …

A poled lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 (PZT) polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic energy-carrying element of a compact explosive-driven power generator was subjected to a longitudinal explosive shock wave (the wave front traveled along the polarization vector P0). The shock compression of the element at pressures of 1.5-3.8 GPa caused almost complete depolarization of the sample. Shock wave velocity in the PZT was determined to be 3.94 ± 0.27 km/s. The electric charge stored in a ferroelectric, due to its remnant polarization, is released during a short time interval and can be transformed into pulsed power. Compact explosive-driven power sources utilizing longitudinal shock …

This paper presents how high frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be effectively used for mapping the subsurface characterization of dolomite and limestone strata for determination if the rock is suitable for ripping. the results of the experiments conducted in the course of this project illustrated that water saturation helps in increasing the contrast between the dielectric constants of the separations, due to water escaping into cracks and clay layers. Running the survey on a dry rock will give a larger penetration depth; but during the interpretation of the results, one can omit small voids or clay layers. © 2005 …

A method for creating ultra-fine particles of material using a high-pressure mill is described. The method includes placing a material in a first chamber and subjecting the material to a high-pressure fluid jet to divide it into particles. These particles are then transferred to a second chamber in which they are subjected to cavitation to further divide the particles into relatively smaller particles. These relatively smaller particles are then transferred to a third chamber, in which the particles collide with a collider to still further divide them into ultra-fine particles of the material. The mill of the present invention includes …

Novel Concepts For Monitoring The Stability Of Open Pit Mine Highwalls Using Radar Interferometry And Spectral Imaging, Jami Girard Dwyer

Masters Theses

"Ground control problems at surface mining operations can occur for a variety of reasons. The geologic setting, rock strengths, joint spacing, orientation, pore pressures, and many other factors contribute to slope instabilities that range from small rock falls to massive slides of material. While much of this ground movement can be predicted or controlled, each year many completely unexpected failures occur. This poses serious safety and economic issues for the mining industry, since any unanticipated movement of the ground increases the potential for significant property damage, injuries, and even death. In the United States alone, 70 people died in slope …
