Using a q+ atomic force microscopy at low temperature, a sexiphenyl molecule is slid across an atomically flat Ag(111) surface along the direction parallel to its molecular axis and sideways to the axis. Despite identical contact area and underlying surface geometry, the lateral force required to move the molecule in the direction parallel to its molecular axis is found to be about half of that required to move it sideways. The origin of the lateral force anisotropy observed here is traced to the one-dimensional shape of the molecule, which is further confirmed by molecular dynamics simulations. We also demonstrate that …

Mechanical debris is an important product of friction wear, which is also a crucial approach to know the running status of a machine. Many studies have been conducted on mechanical debris in related fields such as tribology, instrument, and diagnosis. This paper presents a comprehensive review of these studies, which summarizes wear mechanisms (e.g., abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and adhesive wear) and debris features (e.g., concentration (number), size, morphology, and composition), analyzes detection methods principles (e.g., offline: spectrograph and ferrograph, and online: optical method, inductive method, resistive-capacitive method, and acoustic method), reviews developments of online inductive methods, and investigates the …

The paper proposes a performance degradation analysis model based on dynamic erosion wear for a novel Linear Electro-Hydrostatic Actuator (LEHA). Rather than the traditional statistical methods based on degradation data, the method proposed in this paper firstly analyzes the dominant progressive failure mode of the LEHA based on the working principle and working conditions of the LEHA. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, combining the turbulent theory and the micro erosion principle, is used to establish an erosion model of the rectification mechanism. The erosion rates for different port openings, under a time-varying flow field, are obtained. The piecewise linearization …
Triboelectric Solar Generator Concept And Experimental Research, Elias Yazdanshenas
Triboelectric Solar Generator Concept And Experimental Research, Elias Yazdanshenas
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, a novel concept, a triboelectric solar generator (TSG ), is proposed for generation of high voltage direct current (HVDC) electricity from solar radiation. An experimental investigation was conducted to prove the concepts of charge generation through the triboelectric effect and charge transmission using semiconductors. The triboelectric effect, also known as the contact electrification, is a well-known physical phenomenon that electrostatic charges are generated by rubbing dissimilar materials. However, traditional triboelectric generators had never been commercialized due to their poor power output. Physically, it is due to the difficulty of charge transmission from insulators, which generate charges. The …
Fixture Design For Load Measurement In Friction Stir Welding, Shekhar S. Kulkarni
Fixture Design For Load Measurement In Friction Stir Welding, Shekhar S. Kulkarni
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In the Friction Stir Welding Process a vertical force is required for plunging the pin or probe of the tool into the workpiece specimen material, and maintaining contact between the shoulder and the substrate. In addition to the vertical force, Friction Stir Welding Process also involves a horizontal force, which is instrumental for the advancement of the tool as the weld progresses. The essential objective of the thesis was to design, manufacture and test a fixture that can be utilized to measure the vertical force as well as the horizontal force. The designing of the fixture was concerned with various …
