Optimization Of A Point Absorber Wave Energy Converter (Wec), Rutwa Dilipkumar Nagar
Optimization Of A Point Absorber Wave Energy Converter (Wec), Rutwa Dilipkumar Nagar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This study examines the performance and optimization of a point absorber wave energy converter with a partially submerged spherical float. A comprehensive open-source computational framework integrates frequency-domain hydrodynamic analysis with time-domain simulation using Capytaine, BEMIO, and WEC-Sim. Hydrodynamic coefficients such as added mass, radiation damping, and excitation forces are calculated and integrated into the governing equation of motion using the Cummins formulation. A parametric analysis varies the float diameter and geometric configurations across several cases. Hydrodynamic coefficients and response amplitude operators are assessed to analyze system behavior and resonance characteristics. Results indicate consistent trends in normalized added mass, with radiation …
Experimental Rate Feedback Control Of A Model-Scale Hourglass-Shaped Heaving Point Absorber, James R. Halverson
Experimental Rate Feedback Control Of A Model-Scale Hourglass-Shaped Heaving Point Absorber, James R. Halverson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Buoy geometry greatly affects a point absorber wave energy converter's dynamic response to waves. Finding the optimal buoy shape and control method remains an open research area focused on maximizing the conversion of wave kinetic energy into electricity. This work presents an experimental comparison of closed-loop energy extraction between a cylindrical and a truncated cone buoy, both with the same submerged volume, across various wave frequencies and amplitudes. To ensure a fair comparison, the optimal rate feedback gain is calculated for each buoy at each wave condition. Multiple metrics, including power output, capture width, and actuator force, are used to …

PolyWave Energy is the second team from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo to compete in the Marine Energy Collegiate Competition. PolyWave Energy consists of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Business Administration students who have worked together from September 2023 to May 2024 on designing, building, and testing a marine power device to serve a selected market.
In response to the escalating concerns surrounding carbon emissions, climate change, and the depletion of fossil fuels, California Polytechnic State University’s Polywave Energy team has developed a sustainable and reliable energy source for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) charging. Through extensive research of …
Nonlinear Hydrodynamic Modeling And Control Of Wave Energy Converters, Tania Demonte Gonzalez
Nonlinear Hydrodynamic Modeling And Control Of Wave Energy Converters, Tania Demonte Gonzalez
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The growing urgency to transition towards carbon-neutral energy sources has sparked significant interest in diversifying energy portfolios by incorporating renewable energies, including the untapped potential of wave energy. This dissertation sets its objectives in advancing wave energy converter (WEC) technologies by focusing on developing and validating a nonlinear modeling technique and designing control strategies to maximize energy extraction and enhance WEC efficiency. At the heart of this research is the derivation and validation of an algebraic nonlinear Froude-Krylov forces model. Building on this foundational model, a robust nonlinear sliding mode controller and a nonlinear model predictive controller are designed to …
Sliding Mode Control Of A Nonlinear Wave Energy Converter Model, Tania Demonte Gonzalez
Sliding Mode Control Of A Nonlinear Wave Energy Converter Model, Tania Demonte Gonzalez
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The most accurate wave energy converter models for heaving point absorbers include nonlinearities, which increase as resonance is achieved to maximize energy capture. The efficiency of wave energy converters can be enhanced by employing a control scheme that accounts for these nonlinearities. This project proposes a sliding mode control for a heaving point absorber that includes the nonlinear effects of the Froude-Krylov force. The sliding mode controller tracks a reference velocity that matches the phase of the excitation force to ensure higher energy absorption. This control algorithm is tested in regular linear waves and is compared to a complex-conjugate control …

Closed Loop Energy Maximizing Control Of A Wave Energy Converter Using An Estimated Linear Model That Approximates The Nonlinear Froude-Krylov Force, Yaqzan Mohd Yaqzan
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Wave energy converters (WECs) exploit ocean wave energy and convert it into useful forms such as electricity. But for WECs to be successful on a large scale, two primary conditions need to be satisfied. The energy generated must satisfy the network requirements, and second, energy flow from waves to the grid needs to be maximized. In this dissertation, we address the second problem. Most control techniques for WECs today use the Cummins' linear model to simulate WEC hydrodynamics. However, it has been shown that under the application of a control force, where WEC motions are amplified, the linear model diverges …
Absorber Geometry Optimization For A New Wave Energy Converter, Rachel A. Durren
Absorber Geometry Optimization For A New Wave Energy Converter, Rachel A. Durren
Masters Theses
Alternative energy technologies are on the forefront of research due to the rising costs of oil and natural gas. One relatively under development source of energy is ocean waves. In order to make the use of ocean waves economically viable, the amount of energy absorbed by wave energy converters (WEC) must be optimized. The research within presents a new conceptual design, "Aqua Fly", for a WEC with emphasis on maximizing the amount of energy absorbed. The energy absorption component of the "Aqua Fly" was isolated and a small scale 2-D study of energy absorption. First, the amount of energy in …
