Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies have become more than just a fast and inexpensive way to produce prototypes. Today RP is widely used to produce functional prototypes, end-use parts and tooling as well as visual prototypes. When RP is used for end-use parts with interconnected moving assemblies or for producing metal casting molds which must have sufficient material for machining tolerances, accuracy is very critical. However, in general, accuracy of the finished RP parts is relatively low lll compared to parts produced by traditional manufacturing processes. The understanding of why some of these accuracy differences exist is either unknown or not …

Leanness And Agility In Job Shops: A Framework For A Survey Instrument Developed Using The Delphi Method, Zaki Kuruppalil

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Manufacturers are facing new challenges as competition has become global. Manufacturing companies arc looking for strategies which would help them gain an edge over their competitors. In the United States, lean manufacturing and agile manufacturing have been gaining importance among industries. Agile manufacturing was developed when the United States Department of Defense (DOD) requested Iacocca Institute at Lehigh University to develop a manufacturing framework that could give US companies an edge over their worldwide competitors whereas lean manufacturing has its roots tied to the Toyota Production System (TPS). This raises the questions: what is the clear difference between the two …

Impact Of A Microwave Curing Process On Tensile Strength Of Selected Carbon Fiber Composites, Brian B. Balzer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The traditional process for curing carbon fiber (CF) composites has been the autoclave system. A review of recent research indicates curing CF composites in a microwave oven has the potential for reducing processing time. The problem statement of the experimental study was that the impact of a microwave curing process on tensile strength of selected CF composite specimens was unknown. The research study describes the statistical procedure and analysis of data to answer the specific question for the experimental trials: What is the effect on the tensile strength of cured CF composite samples due to the relationship of the autoclave …

Case Studies On Usage Of Axiomatic Design Methodology In The U.S. Industries, Alireza Alavizadeh Aug 2007

Case Studies On Usage Of Axiomatic Design Methodology In The U.S. Industries, Alireza Alavizadeh

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Axiomatic Design, originally developed by Nam Suh, is a design methodology that attempts to systematize the design practices and to provide a basis on which design can be carried out and optimized according to two main axioms, namely, Independence and Information axioms. Although various scholars in both academia and industry have studied the applicability and effectiveness of this methodology, the extent to which Axiomatic Design has been implemented in industry, particularly in the U.S., is unknown. l1l This study was conducted to identify the extent to which Axiomatic Design is known to the U.S. industries. Other purposes of this study …

An Experimental Evaluation Of Performance Variance For Internally Threaded Geometry Related To Extended Tap Wear In Low Carbon Steel, Todd E. Alberts May 2007

An Experimental Evaluation Of Performance Variance For Internally Threaded Geometry Related To Extended Tap Wear In Low Carbon Steel, Todd E. Alberts

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of internal threads in a manufactured part is in many cases one of the final operations in the production workflow. Quality issues in thread form development can destroy a part that has previously undergone expensive machining. The issue of tap wear is one of the multi-faceted elements that have a direct correlation on the quality of threaded components. The purpose of this research centers on resultant mechanical pull performance for the stripping of internally threaded geometry in low carbon steel as measured over various increments of the tap cutting life cycle.

An Experimental Comparison Of Dimensional And Strength Characteristics Of American And Chinese Manufactured Fasteners, Michael Bailey Stroup Dec 2006

An Experimental Comparison Of Dimensional And Strength Characteristics Of American And Chinese Manufactured Fasteners, Michael Bailey Stroup

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the quality and strength characteristics ofboth American and Chinese manufactured fasteners. The purpose of this research was to determine if there is a significant statistical difference between both manufacturers dimensional and tensile strength characteristics as to the American National Standards Institute's specified tolerances. The researcher selected the independent samples t-test to analyze the raw data collected from the experiment. SPSS 13.0 statistical analysis software was used to determine the degree of correlation between the independent variables: fastener dimensions, and ultimate tensile strengths. The researcher involved utilizing a calibrated micrometer that was capable to producing measurements to the …

Correlation Of Numerical Ability And Quality Technician Best Performers In Manufacturing Quality Control Applications, Charles Wesley Shelton Dec 2006

Correlation Of Numerical Ability And Quality Technician Best Performers In Manufacturing Quality Control Applications, Charles Wesley Shelton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The occupation of Quality Technician has many duties requiring numerical operations. Business and industry place considerable emphasis on numerical ability when evaluating the performance of a Quality Technician. In this study, the numerical ability and performance classification of Quality Technicians were analyzed using a correlation analysis. lll A single case study was used to investigate this relationship. A modified Delphi Method was used to determine characteristics of a Quality Technician. Quality Technicians were evaluated by their direct supervisor and completed a standardized numerical ability test. The evaluations by the supervisor were used to classify each technician based on their performance. …

Knowledge Representation, Organization, And Formalization For Simulation Modeling Of Discrete Manufacturing System, Jung Hung Ma Aug 2005

Knowledge Representation, Organization, And Formalization For Simulation Modeling Of Discrete Manufacturing System, Jung Hung Ma

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is an useful tool that helps managers making decision by designing models for real systems. It helps companies to study behaviors of real systems hy analyzing computer models and improve the systems based on the experiments' results. However, cross-domain knowledge requirement and lack of tools facilitate modeling are the main reasons that make industries hesitate to use simulation to assist making decision. This research is an attempt to develop robust knowledge representations for discrete manufacturing system and conceptual simulation model. A modeling methodology was proposed to utilize these knowledge representations (KRs) for developing conceptual simulation models from application domain …

A Case Study On Implementation Of Quality Function Deployment Into The Design Process Of A Small Job Shop, Benjamin A. Thomson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The majority of research involving Quality Function Deployment (QFD) was focused on large consumer based companies and not small job shop business-to-business companies. This case study involved the implementation of QFD into the design process at Reynolds & Co., a small job shop in Terre Haute, IN. The specific objectives of the research were to find the QFD concepts that apply to the improvement of Reynolds & Co.'s (small job shop) design process. The next objective was to reduce the average design time associated with Reynolds & Co.'s design process. The final objective of this case study was to reduce …
