Experimental Investigation And Performance Analysis Of The Transformational Challenge Reactor (Tcr) System Under Various Temperature And Pressure Conditions, Ahmed Mohamed Ali Soliman

Dissertations and Theses

The Transformational Challenge Reactor (TCR) represents a significant advancement in nuclear reactor technology, taking into consideration modularity, efficiency, and safety. This study explores the coupling between thermal behavior and the coolant gas flow behavior of the TCR’s 3D-printed ceramic core under various operating conditions. Using nitrogen as a coolant, experiments were performed at pressures ranging from 20.4 bar to 40.8 bar (300 to 600 psi) and temperatures from 100°C to 300°C. The main parameters including gas inlet and outlet temperatures, the TCR wall temperature at the inlet and outlet, and flow rates, were analyzed to evaluate heat transfer efficiency and …

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Runaway In Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition Kinetics And Inter-Cell Contact Resistance, Shehzad Khan Jan 2024

Numerical Modeling Of Thermal Runaway In Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Decomposition Kinetics And Inter-Cell Contact Resistance, Shehzad Khan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are central in numerous high-demand applications due to their high energy density and prolonged cycle life. Despite these advantages, their susceptibility to thermal runaway (TR) poses a significant safety risk, with the potential for catastrophic failures. This study focuses on the thermal behavior of prismatic lithium-ion cells, using a finite volume-based partial differential equation (PDE) solver developed in MATLAB and JULIA to model TR behavior. This solver accurately simulates transient behaviors, convection, diffusion, and source terms across various coordinate systems. By engaging in a series of increasing complex case studies, this research aims to identify the critical …

Design And Implementation Of Portable Power And Desalination Units Powered By Renewable Energy, Mo'ath A. Massad Jan 2024

Design And Implementation Of Portable Power And Desalination Units Powered By Renewable Energy, Mo'ath A. Massad

Mechanical Engineering Theses

Freshwater scarcity is a critical global issue, especially in remote areas or areas impacted by natural disasters. Water desalination is one of the most effective methods to provide fresh water where it is needed. However, large-scale desalination plants cannot provide fresh water in the case of a natural disaster far from the plant's location. To address this, portable desalination units powered by renewable energy sources can be developed to supply potable water and power as a by-product for emergency situations. This work explored the application of different desalination methods, including reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis (ED), in conjunction with renewable …

Fluid Flow And Thermal Performance Investigation Of Twisted Elliptical Tubes For Use In High Prandtl Number Systems, Connor F. Donlan Jan 2024

Fluid Flow And Thermal Performance Investigation Of Twisted Elliptical Tubes For Use In High Prandtl Number Systems, Connor F. Donlan

Theses and Dissertations

The development of clean energy systems is paramount to reducing mankind's climate impact. These clean energy systems include solar, wind, and nuclear power where nuclear power shows a reduced lifetime carbon dioxide footprint per kilowatt hour compared to other sources [102]. Advanced nuclear reactors, fusion energy systems, and concentrated solar power designers are looking at using molten salt heat transfer fluids and improved heat exchanger design to increase power production and efficiency of clean energy systems. The improving heat transfer within the main heat transfer components within advanced nuclear reactors will enable increased efficiencies and power production.

Heat transfer improvements …

Feasibility Study Of Managing Peak Cooling Loads To Achieve Energy Cost Reduction In A Northern Climate Campus, Mark Rizkalla Jan 2024

Feasibility Study Of Managing Peak Cooling Loads To Achieve Energy Cost Reduction In A Northern Climate Campus, Mark Rizkalla

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota State University Facilities and Services Office is facing the challenge of paying high electricity bills every year, the potential of campus growth will add more burden on the energy needed to cover this demand, especially in summer months when high cooling loads are added to the electrical loads which lead to the peak loads that costs SDSU a large amount of money. The purpose of this research is to study the feasibility of managing the peak loads to reduce energy costs by applying a suitable system that fits SDSU campus nature. The methodology used is studying the capability …

Energy And Empowerment In The High Arctic, Alyssa Pantaleo Jan 2024

Energy And Empowerment In The High Arctic, Alyssa Pantaleo

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

National governments continue to depend on fossil fuels for electricity and heat generation in Arctic communities. This dependence threatens the economic, environmental, and cultural sustainability of Arctic communities and subjects them to future volatility and uncertainty. In Greenland, the centralized government structure creates additional challenges for northern communities by limiting the inclusion of local knowledge and priorities in favor of national, standardized solutions. This research identifies pathways towards fossil fuel reduction in northern Greenlandic communities via 1.) analyzing the potential for renewable energy inclusion in grid-scale or residential energy generation and 2.) analysis of the potential for energy reduction in …

An Investigation Of The Performance Of A 140 Kw Solar Panel In West Virginia, Rumana Subnom Jan 2024

An Investigation Of The Performance Of A 140 Kw Solar Panel In West Virginia, Rumana Subnom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Solar panels are recognized as a viable technology for producing electricity from sunlight. The performance of a solar panel is influenced by factors such as solar irradiance, tilt angle, orientation, shading, panel age, degradation, and various environmental conditions including ambient air temperature, humidity, dust, soil, and snow.

In this research, a mobile solar panel testing system consisting of a mobile cart, a solar panel, and a portable power station was designed and fabricated to evaluate the performance of a solar panel. The battery is equipped with a thermal management system controlling its temperature and charging and discharging system. The current …

Investigation Of Space Charge Effects On Co2 Electrocatalytic Reduction On Gd-Doped Ceria Via Scanning Kelvin Probe And Model-Based Bayesian Analysis, Alejandro Mejia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In studying novel energy conversion and storage systems, such as high-temperature electrolysis, numerous underlying fundamental physical processes remain unclear or inadequately understood. Among these, the modeling and comprehension of surface reaction mechanisms, coupled with the intricate effects of space‑charge interfaces, remains an unclear and challenging area of research.

The work of this dissertation involves the development of a 2D finite element analysis model, leveraging the robust MOOSE framework from INL. This model, featuring inhomogeneous defect thermodynamics for near-surface chemistry, formulated through Poisson‑Cahn variational theory, has been exploited for studying the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 on gadolinia doped ceria. The …
