Managing Humidity In Electronics Using Water Vapor-Selective Membranes, Songhao Wu, Andrew J. Fix, Allison Mou, David M. Warsinger, James Braun
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Abstract: As outdoor electronics have become prevalent in every aspect of daily life, handling humidity in them is an emerging issue for reliable devices. As water vapor enters the electronics enclosure, there is a risk of condensation, which could prevent the electronics from functioning and further damage the device. Traditionally, the humidity removal for electronics is usually done by heating the air within the enclosure, which can be energy-intensive and less efficient. Vapor selective membrane systems are promising alternatives for air heating dehumidification as they do not require heating energy for water vapor removal. It allows water vapor transport through …

Combustion Feature Characterization Using Computer Vision Diagnostics Within Rotating Detonation Combustors, Kristyn B. Johnson May
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In recent years, the possibilities of higher thermodynamic efficiency and power output have led to increasing interest in the field of pressure gain combustion (PGC). Currently, a majority of PGC research is concerned with rotating detonation engines (RDEs), devices which may theoretically achieve pressure gain across the combustor. Within the RDE, detonation waves propagate continuously around a cylindrical annulus, consuming fresh fuel mixtures supplied from the base of the RDE annulus. Through constant-volume heat addition, pressure gain combustion devices theoretically achieve lower entropy generation compared to Brayton cycle combustors. RDEs are being studied for future implementation in gas turbines, where …

Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The paper industry provides important consumer products comprised of paper, tissue, paper board, and pulping. The papermaking process requires a lot of energy, in the form of steam, to dry the paper web in rotating dryers. As steam condenses inside the dryers by releasing heat to the dryer walls, the condensate is removed using either stationary or rotary siphons. Since the condensate is usually at a saturated state, part of the condensate flashes into vapor during the extraction process and becomes difficult to extract. Thus, additional blow-through steam is used to push the condensate out. Since this blow-through steam is …

Waste Heat Recovery Of Industrial Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (Rto), A Case Study, James Trimpe Jr.
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Industrial processes that utilize and release hazardous compounds into the atmosphere are required to break down those compounds before exhausting them from their facilities. An industry-recognized method to break down those hazardous compounds is through thermal oxidation. Thermal oxidation is a process where the compounds are exposed to their auto-ignition temperature in an oxygen-rich environment and combust. The output of thermal oxidation is carbon dioxide, water vapor, and heat. Thermal oxidizers are equipment that performs the thermal oxidation process. The heat output from thermal oxidizers is wasted if directly exhausted into the atmosphere. Regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs) use the waste …
