Capstone Review: Warn Winch Proximity Sensor, Leana Girton
Capstone Review: Warn Winch Proximity Sensor, Leana Girton
University Honors Theses
This thesis reviews the mechanical engineering capstone project that designed a winch proximity sensor for WARN Industries. WARN is very interested in developing this product for market as a safety and ease-of-use accessory, and working with Portland State University was the first step in this process. A group of four mechanical engineering and four electrical engineering capstone students collaborated to research sensor types, test the selected methods, and design and build a prototype. The final design implements an inductive ring, a mechanical button, and bluetooth signaling. The project succeeded in prototyping a proximity sensor for WARN, who will have access …
Good Similar Patches For Image Denoising (Poster), Si Lu
Good Similar Patches For Image Denoising (Poster), Si Lu
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Patch-based denoising algorithms like BM3D have achieved outstanding performance. An important idea for the success of these methods is to exploit the recurrence of similar patches in an input image to estimate the underlying image structures....
Neuromechanical Model Of Rat Hindlimb Walking With Two-Layer Cpgs, Kaiyu Deng, Nicholas Szczecinski, Dirk Arnold, Emanuel Andrada, Martin Fischer, Roger Quinn, Alexander J. Hunt
Neuromechanical Model Of Rat Hindlimb Walking With Two-Layer Cpgs, Kaiyu Deng, Nicholas Szczecinski, Dirk Arnold, Emanuel Andrada, Martin Fischer, Roger Quinn, Alexander J. Hunt
Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This work demonstrates a neuromechanical model of rat hindlimb locomotion undergoing nominal walking with perturbations. In the animal, two types of responses to perturbations are observed: resetting and non-resetting deletions. This suggests that the animal locomotor system contains a memory-like organization. To model this phenomenon, we built a synthetic nervous system that uses separate rhythm generator and pattern formation layers to activate antagonistic muscle pairs about each joint in the sagittal plane. Our model replicates the resetting and non-resetting deletions observed in the animal. In addition, in the intact (i.e., fully afferented) rat walking simulation, we observe slower recovery after …
Three Speed 3d Printed Magnetic Gear, Robert J. Rutherford
Three Speed 3d Printed Magnetic Gear, Robert J. Rutherford
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Power transmission is traditionally achieved with a mechanical gear. Mechanical gears require maintenance, cause vibration, and have no overload protection. Magnetic gears offer an innovative solution to these drawbacks as they do not require regular maintenance, have no need for lubrication, create very little acoustic noise, have built in overload protection and as a result of these advantages, have a longer lifetime of operation. This research focused upon the design, assembly and demonstration of the magnetic gear concept. The research used a solid works design, 3D printed ABS plastic housing, and use of neodymium magnets and ferromagnetic iron segments.

Designing Model Experiments Around Harriet Tubman Middle School, Ryan Crist, Sarah Smith, Greg Sakradse, Ryan Scott
Designing Model Experiments Around Harriet Tubman Middle School, Ryan Crist, Sarah Smith, Greg Sakradse, Ryan Scott
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Air quality is of concern in densely populated areas and especially near sources of inefficiently exhausted fossil fuel such as near the highway. Harriet Tubman middle school in North Portland, Oregon is situated alongside highway 5. Here, model experiments are designed and proposed to observe the instantaneous flow fields reflect modifications. LIDAR data was used to model the school and surrounding topography three-dimensionally in order to construct a model school and surrounding area from laser cut cardboard with a surface smoothed with paper mache. This model will be placed in the Portland State University wind tunnel; transport of mean and …
System Dynamics Implementation Of An Extended Brander And Taylor-Like Easter Island Model, Takuro Uehara, Yoko Nagase, Wayne Wakeland
System Dynamics Implementation Of An Extended Brander And Taylor-Like Easter Island Model, Takuro Uehara, Yoko Nagase, Wayne Wakeland
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
We provide a system dynamics implementation of a dynamic ecological economics model. Dynamic economic models are often constrained to use functions, such as the Cobb-Douglas function, chosen “conveniently” to allow for analytic solutions. The C-D function, however, suffers from its fixed elasticity that does not allow for the substitutability between man-made capital and natural capital to change, which is vital for economic sustainability. Using system dynamics removes this constraint and enables more realistic ecological economics models containing functions not amenable to analytic solution. The base model is the natural resource and population growth model developed by Brander and Taylor (1998) …
Computer Solution To Inverse Problems Of Elliptic Form: V²U(X,Y) = G(A,U,X,Y), Frederick Alvin Jeter
Computer Solution To Inverse Problems Of Elliptic Form: V²U(X,Y) = G(A,U,X,Y), Frederick Alvin Jeter
Dissertations and Theses
One important aspect of our present age of monolithic high speed computers is the computer's capability to solve complex problems hitherto impossible to tackle due to their complexity. This paper explains how to use a. digital computer to solve a specific type of problem; specifically, to find the inverse solution of a in the elliptical equation V2U(x,y) = g(a,U,x,y), with appropriate boundary conditions. This equation is very useful in the electronics field. The knowns are the complete set of boundary values of U(x,y) and a set of observations taken on internal points of U(x,y). Given this information, plus …
Direct Design Of A Portal Frame, Angel Fajardo Ugaz
Direct Design Of A Portal Frame, Angel Fajardo Ugaz
Dissertations and Theses
This investigation was undertaken to develop plastic design aids to be used in the direct design of optimum frames. It uses the concept of minimum weight of plastically designed steel frames, and the concept of linear programming to obtain general solutions. Among the special characteristics of this study are: A. The integration of both gravity and combined loading conditions into one linear programming problem. B. The application of the revised simplex method to the dual of a parametric original problem. C. The application of A and B above in the development of design aids for the optimum design of symmetrical …
