Autonomous Robot For Indoor Enhanced Living (Ariel), Prabhjot Kaur Jan 2024

Autonomous Robot For Indoor Enhanced Living (Ariel), Prabhjot Kaur

Wayne State University Dissertations

The global population is aging rapidly, with the total percentage of older adults (65 years and older) projected to increase from 10\% of the total population in 2022 to 16\% by 2050, according to the World Population Prospectus 2022 issued by the United Nations. For certain parts of the world such as Europe and North America, this translates to 1 in every 4 persons is projected to be 65 years or older by 2060. This trend raises concerns about providing quality long-term care for the older population. Moreover, according to the 2021 survey by the American Association of Retired Persons …

Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela Jan 2022

Laser-Assisted Sound Source Localization Inside A Solid Enclosure, Antonio Figueroa Mombela

Wayne State University Dissertations

Sound source localization is typically conducted in open space so that the line of sight is not blocked among individual sensors. This research presents a new technology that enables one to see acoustically through a solid Plexiglass enclosure to locate a sound source stationed inside at some arbitrarily selected locations. By using SODAR technology, non-invasive laser-assisted microphones, analog, and digital signal processing (band-pass filtering, fast Fourier transform algorithm, cross-correlations, and triangulations) satisfactory sound source localization results were obtained. In this project, the enclosure walls were flat; only the azimuth angle of a sound source could be determined. To obtain the …

An Effective Methodology For Suppressing Structure-Borne Sound Radiation, Lingguang Chen Jan 2017

An Effective Methodology For Suppressing Structure-Borne Sound Radiation, Lingguang Chen

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

AN EFFECTIVE METHODOLOGY FOR SUPPRESSING

STRUCTURE-BORNE SOUND RADIATION

by

LINGGUANG CHEN

December 2017

Advisor: Dr. Sean F. Wu

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

This dissertation is primarily concerned with the development of an effective methodology for reducing structure-borne sound radiation from an arbitrarily shaped vibrating structure. There are three major aspects that separate the present methodology from all the previous ones. Firstly, it is a non-contact and non-invasive approach, which is applicable to a class of vibrating structures encountered in engineering applications. Secondly, the input data consists of a combined normal surface velocity distribution on a portion …

Stop Identity Cues As A Cue To Language Identity, Paula Lisa Castonguay Jan 2016

Stop Identity Cues As A Cue To Language Identity, Paula Lisa Castonguay

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether language membership could potentially be cued by the acoustic-phonetic detail of word-initial stops and retained all the way through the process of lexical access to aid in language identification. Of particular interest were language-specific differences in CE and CF word-initial stops. Experiment 1 consisted of an interlingual homophone production task. The purpose of this study was to examine how word-initial stop consonants differ in terms of acoustic properties in Canadian English (CE) and Canadian French (CF) interlingual homophones. The analyses from the bilingual speakers in Experiment 1 indicate that bilinguals …

Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Near-Field Acoustic Holography With Laser, Wu Zhu Jan 2015

Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Near-Field Acoustic Holography With Laser, Wu Zhu

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation presents the HELS based NAH with laser and use normal surface velocity as input in near-field acoustic holography. The conventional HELS based NAH uses acoustic pressure as input to reconstruct sound field quantities, while this modified HELS based NAH with laser utilizes the normal surface velocities measured by LDV to reconstruct the acoustic quantities at interested positions. Theoretical principles of the HELS based NAH with laser have been fully developed and the method has been verified in theoretical perspective. Two theoretical examples verify that HELS based NAH with laser can obtain exactly the same results as analytic solution. …

Visualizing Interior And Exterior Jet Aircraft Noise, Manmohan Singh Moondra Jan 2014

Visualizing Interior And Exterior Jet Aircraft Noise, Manmohan Singh Moondra

Wayne State University Dissertations

In today's competitive aerospace industry, the quest for quiet has drawn significant attention to both the interior and exterior design of an airplane. Understanding the noise generation mechanisms of a jet aircraft is a crucial first step toward developing the most cost-effective noise and vibrations abatement methods. In this investigation, the Helmholtz Equation Least Squares (HELS) based nearfield acoustic holography will be used to understand noise transmission caused by jet engine and turbulence into the fuselage of a jet aircraft cruising at 30,000 ft.

Modern propulsive jet engines produce exterior noise sources with a high amplitude noise field and complicated …

Developing A System For Blind Acoustic Source Localization And Separation, Raghavendra Kulkarni Jan 2013

Developing A System For Blind Acoustic Source Localization And Separation, Raghavendra Kulkarni

Wayne State University Theses

This dissertation presents innovate methodologies for locating, extracting, and separating multiple incoherent sound sources in three-dimensional (3D) space; and applications of the time reversal (TR) algorithm to pinpoint the hyper active neural activities inside the brain auditory structure that are correlated to the tinnitus pathology. Specifically, an acoustic modeling based method is developed for locating arbitrary and incoherent sound sources in 3D space in real time by using a minimal number of microphones, and the Point Source Separation (PSS) method is developed for extracting target signals from directly measured mixed signals. Combining these two approaches leads to a novel technology …

Structure Borne Noise Analysis Using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Forced Vibro Acoustic Components, Logesh Kumar Natarajan Jan 2013

Structure Borne Noise Analysis Using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares Based Forced Vibro Acoustic Components, Logesh Kumar Natarajan

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation presents a structure-borne noise analysis technology that is focused on providing a cost-effective noise reduction strategy. Structure-borne sound is generated or transmitted through structural vibration; however, only a small portion of the vibration can effectively produce sound and radiate it to the far-field. Therefore, cost-effective noise reduction is reliant on identifying and suppressing the critical vibration components that are directly responsible for an undesired sound. However, current technologies cannot successfully identify these critical vibration components from the point of view of direct contribution to sound radiation and hence cannot guarantee the best cost-effective noise reduction.

The technology developed …

Reconstruction Resolution Of Coherent Point Sources With Helmholtz Equation Least Squares, Richard Edward Dziklinski Jan 2011

Reconstruction Resolution Of Coherent Point Sources With Helmholtz Equation Least Squares, Richard Edward Dziklinski

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dissertation investigates the reconstruction of coherent point sources using Helmholtz Equation Least Squares (HELS) method based on measurements in violation of Nearfield Acoustical Holography (NAH) resolution guidelines. In HELS, the Helmholtz equation is solved by matching a series of localized spherical expansion functions to the measured pressures in the field. Expansion coefficients are solved for by least squares and used to reconstruct pressures at the source surface. By approximating the pressure radiation with expansion functions, field and surface pressures can be synthesized, resulting in the possibility of higher spatial resolution than previous generation NAH methods such as Fourier Acoustics …
