A Study Of Directionality Effects In Three-Beam Coaxial Titanium Wire-Based Laser Metal Deposition, Remy Mathenia, Braden Mclain, Todd Sparks, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Coaxial wire-based laser metal deposition is a versatile and efficient additive process that can achieve a high deposition rate in the manufacturing of complex structures. In this paper, a three-beam coaxial wire system is studied, with particular attention given to the effects of the deposition direction and laser beam orientation on the resulting bead geometry symmetry. With the three-beam laser delivery, the laser spot pattern is not always symmetric with respect to the deposition direction. Single titanium beads are deposited in different directions and at varying deposition rates, and the bead profile is quantitatively scored for multiple symmetry measures. Through …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Austenitic stainless steel, also known as SUS304, has a wide industrial application. The resultant residual stresses and deformation due to arc welding play a critical role in an in-service SUS04 part failure. Various experimental studies have been presented to predict residual stresses and part deformation. However, these techniques are expensive and time-consuming owing to the trial-and-error approach, limiting their application to industrial applications. Based on the emergent need, this study introduces two simulation models based on analytical and FEM techniques for thermal distribution and residual stress estimation. The experimentally calibrated models results have been implemented for SUS304 multi-pass arc welding. …

Studying The Performance Of Object Recognition With Fusion Of Visible Light And Infrared Images With Neural Networks, Plamen Petkov Jul 2024

Studying The Performance Of Object Recognition With Fusion Of Visible Light And Infrared Images With Neural Networks, Plamen Petkov

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Neural networks have been used for object detection and recognition in both color and intensity camera images. As the use of infrared cameras, colloquially termed thermal cameras, has increased and costs have decreased, object detection and recognition in infrared camera images have been increasingly studied. An infrared image is treated as an intensity image, just like a grayscale camera image, except the intensity corresponds to infrared radiation instead of visible light. The information provided by these two types of images are different, especially in different lighting and environmental situations, and some types of objects are more easily recognized in visible …

Development Of A Large Format Additive Manufacturing System Based On An Off-The-Self Pellet Extruder, Aywan Das Jul 2024

Development Of A Large Format Additive Manufacturing System Based On An Off-The-Self Pellet Extruder, Aywan Das

Theses and Dissertations

Large Format Additive Manufacturing (LFAM), or Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM), was introduced to resolve the limitations of the low deposition rate, low scalability, and therefore long print times, of traditional 3D printing methods when applied to the manufacturing of large structures and tooling. LFAM can be used to overcome the high conventional tooling costs of large structures. However, even with robotic setups, LFAM still mainly relies on quasi-planar, 2.5D printing strategies. This fails to reap the advantages of multi-axis printing, such as improved adhesion, reduced support material use, and the ability to create complex curved surfaces. In this research, …

Wind Plant Wake Losses: Disconnect Between Turbine Actuation And Control Of Plant Wakes With Engineering Wake Models, Ryan Scott, Nicholas Hamilton, Raul Bayoan Cal, Patrick Moriarty Jul 2024

Wind Plant Wake Losses: Disconnect Between Turbine Actuation And Control Of Plant Wakes With Engineering Wake Models, Ryan Scott, Nicholas Hamilton, Raul Bayoan Cal, Patrick Moriarty

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wake losses from neighboring plants may become a major factor in wind plant design and control as additional plants are constructed in areas with high wind resource availability. Because plant wakes span a large range of physical scales, from turbine rotor diameter to tens of kilometers, it is unclear whether conventional wake models or turbine control strategies are effective at the plant scale. Wake steering and axial induction control are evaluated in the current work as means of reducing the impact of neighboring wind plants on power and levelized cost of electricity. FLOw Redirection and Induction in Steady State (FLORIS) …

Development Of A Rule-Based Monitoring System For Autonomous Heavy Equipment Safety, Amirpooya Shirazi Jul 2024

Development Of A Rule-Based Monitoring System For Autonomous Heavy Equipment Safety, Amirpooya Shirazi

Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Roadway construction work zones are constantly exposed to interactions among construction equipment, workers, and vehicles. Furthermore, ensuring safety in these areas is considered a challenging task due to the complexity of the environment. As shown in the rising trend of fatal accidents in roadway work zones, current OSHA regulations in construction safety are insufficient in effectively detecting unsafe situations and mitigating the risks. Furthermore, best practices, such as internal traffic control planning (ITCP), exhibit critical limitations requiring continuous monitoring of active work zones as well as adjustments to the site coordination plans due to the dynamic nature of work zone …

Investigation Of Emissions Characteristics Of Natural Gas Engines With Prechamber Enabled Mixing Controlled Combustion, Johnathan Michael Ronsman Jul 2024

Investigation Of Emissions Characteristics Of Natural Gas Engines With Prechamber Enabled Mixing Controlled Combustion, Johnathan Michael Ronsman

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Increasingly stringent emissions regulations have motivated the exploration of ways to decarbonize the internal combustion engine (ICE). Alternative fuels are of interest as they can easily be implemented with existing infrastructure. Among these alternative fuels, natural gas stands out due to its large abundance and high hydrogen-to-carbon ratio, which can significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Due to its low reactivity, most natural gas engines today are premixed lean burn spark ignited (SI) engines. These engines produce criteria pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO), but due to their premixed nature, also produce relatively large amounts of unburned methane …

Design And Verification Of A Planar, Programmable, Compliant Hand For Use In General Open-Loop Constrained Manipulation, Jacob Frye Jul 2024

Design And Verification Of A Planar, Programmable, Compliant Hand For Use In General Open-Loop Constrained Manipulation, Jacob Frye

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Conventional robots are adept at performing tasks where the desired absolute position of the robot's end effector is well defined. However, these robots will struggle with tasks in which the desired position is poorly defined, subject to variation, or determined by contact with a constraint with positional uncertainty. This problem can be solved by introducing compliance to the system, either active or passive. Active compliance uses force feedback to make corrective motions, but is limited in speed and experiences higher contact forces than passive systems. Passively compliant systems are capable of realizing the necessary compliance for a given task but …

Solving Unsteady Potential Flow Problems In O(N) Time, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Ning Jul 2024

Solving Unsteady Potential Flow Problems In O(N) Time, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Design of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is challenging in part due to significant aerodynamic interactions between rotors and wings. Computational models can aid in their design, but are computationally expensive. 3-D panel methods coupled with vortex particle wakes offer an attractive solution, but solving for the panel strengths scales poorly for large problems. Multigrid methods, such as Krylov subspace methods in conjunction with the fast multipole method (FMM), have been demonstrated to reduce the scaling to O(𝑁). We explore the performance and limitations of the Krylov-FMM method, traditional matrix-powered GMRES, LU decomposition, and a novel O(𝑁) multigrid approach to …

Geometrically Exact Beam Theory For Gradient-Based Optimization, Taylor Mcdonnell, Andrew Ning Jul 2024

Geometrically Exact Beam Theory For Gradient-Based Optimization, Taylor Mcdonnell, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Decades of research have progressed geometrically exact beam theory to the point where it is now an invaluable resource for analyzing and modeling highly flexible slender structures. Large-scale optimization using geometrically exact beam theory remains nontrivial, however, due to the inability of gradient-free optimizers to handle large numbers of design variables in a computationally efficient manner and the difficulties associated with obtaining smooth, accurate, and efficiently calculated design sensitivities for gradient-based optimization. To overcome these challenges, this paper presents a finite-element implementation of geometrically exact beam theory which has been developed specifically for gradient-based optimization. A key feature of this …

Derivative Propagation Through Vortex Particle Method Simulation, Eric Green, Andrew Ning Jul 2024

Derivative Propagation Through Vortex Particle Method Simulation, Eric Green, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Automatic differentiation (AD) is a powerful tool for evaluating numerical derivatives. In particular, reverse-mode AD provides numerical gradients in a way that is insensitive to the number of input variables. This makes reverse-mode AD well-suited for solving large optimization problems. However, reverse-mode AD has a particularly large associated memory cost because most intermediate values in operations need to be cached. This is problematic for large problems such as aerodynamics simulations, though, since the memory requirements can quickly become impractical. The solution implemented in this work is to provide analytic pullback expressions for functions for which many of the intermediate values …
