Unsteady Flow Behaviors Generated By Three-Dimensional Lattice Geometries As Measured By Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Yi Qiao Jan 2023

Unsteady Flow Behaviors Generated By Three-Dimensional Lattice Geometries As Measured By Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Yi Qiao

Doctoral Dissertations

"The relation between flow stream turbulence and heat transfer has been known for a long time, that the heat transfer rate is increased if the turbulence or fluctuation level of the flow increases. Open cell foams and compact heat exchangers are two of the most common models applied for heat transfer augmentation. However, the small ligaments of open cell foams limit the heat conducted and smooth passages in compact heat exchangers cannot cause flow unsteadiness. Accordingly, new geometric models are needed to improve the heat transfer enhancement. Three-dimensional (3D) lattice geometries with a range of features and sizes can be …

Evaluating Electrification Of Fossil Fuel-Fired Boilers For Decarbonization Using Discrete Event Simulation, Nahian Ismail Chowdhury Jan 2023

Evaluating Electrification Of Fossil Fuel-Fired Boilers For Decarbonization Using Discrete Event Simulation, Nahian Ismail Chowdhury

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Decarbonizing fossil fuel usage is crucial in mitigating the impacts of climate change. CO2, which comprises the major portion of greenhouse gas, is emitted from burning fossil fuels. One of the significant sources of fossil fuel user is industrial process heating, and most of the heating in industrial processes is achieved through boilers. Electrification is a promising solution for decarbonizing these boilers, as it enables renewable energy sources to generate electricity, which can then be used to power the electric boilers. The electrification of boilers can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and increase energy efficiency. However, it requires …

Development Of Machine Learning Based Approach To Predict Fuel Consumption And Maintenance Cost Of Heavy-Duty Vehicles Using Diesel And Alternative Fuels, Sasanka Katreddi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

One of the major contributors of human-made greenhouse gases (GHG) namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (NOX) in the transportation sector and heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) contributing to about 27% of the overall fraction. In addition to the rapid increase in global temperature, airborne pollutants from diesel vehicles also present a risk to human health. Even a small improvement that could potentially drive energy savings to the century-old mature diesel technology could yield a significant impact on minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. With the increasing focus on reducing emissions and operating costs, there is a need for efficient and …

Optimal Path Planning For Aerial Robots Using Genetic Algorithm, Anna Puigvert I Juan Jan 2023

Optimal Path Planning For Aerial Robots Using Genetic Algorithm, Anna Puigvert I Juan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis presents a path optimization solution for a robot in two different constrained 3-dimensional (3D) environments. The robot is required to travel from its current position to a goal position following minimum cost paths (optimal paths). The first environment has 3D obstacles that interfere with the robot’s path. The path cost for this environment accounts for the minimum distance traveled by the robot from the start to the goal position while avoiding obstacles. The second environment is the atmosphere of Venus, specifically a flyable region of this atmosphere with characteristics similar to Earth’s. This environment has strong westward winds …

Structural Health Monitoring Using Machine Learning And Synthetic Data, Michail Tzimas Jan 2023

Structural Health Monitoring Using Machine Learning And Synthetic Data, Michail Tzimas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Structural health monitoring spans many decades of research across multiple engineering fields. However, typical monitoring processes for damage detection of complex structures usually prohibit real-time or fast detection of debilitating damage to the structure. One of the major issues of real-time detection of damage is the enormity of data that needs to be processed, which is worsened by the relative inability of fast relaying of data to structural engineers. With the rapid advancement of Machine Learning, both issues can be overcome, and detection of failure is achieved with non-invasive techniques. This dissertation explores the applicability of Machine Learning as a …

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Analysis With Physical Sub-Models, Samuel Abimbola Ogunfuye Jan 2023

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Analysis With Physical Sub-Models, Samuel Abimbola Ogunfuye

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ever-increasing explosions occurring globally at a rapid rate and in diverse situations have re-established the fact that novel, faster, and more accurate approaches must be developed to analyze and possibly curb these explosions and avert their future occurrences. Experimental endeavors and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations as compared to engineering models generally require enormous time, and resources, as well as a high-level of expertise and technicalities. This might, however, delay prompt analysis and the ability to draw conclusions, thereby causing setbacks in recommending safety measures for different situations and conditions. Therefore, robust models which are accurate and fast to give …

Multimaterial, Core-Shell Direct Ink Writing Of Flexible Strain Sensors For Pneumatically-Actuated Soft Robotic Hinge Joints, John Michael Burke

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Direct ink writing (DIW) provides for an expansive material library and the ability to print multiple materials with tailored functionalities in a controllable and single-step process. Particularly beneficial is the net shape printing under ambient conditions of a wide range of materials normally incompatible with one another. Coaxial DIW is a 3D printing technique that allows for two dissimilar inks to be extruded simultaneously in a co-flow manner. In this work, custom-designed coaxial nozzles were 3D-printed using a stereolithography printer. Composite inks comprised of thermoplastic polyurethane and silver were developed and studied. The coaxial nozzles were then used to co-extrude …

The ability of these dyes to measure temperature is compared to an Ansys FEA simulation of a fixed temperature gradient. For multiphase flow, the fluorescent dyes were both …

Cfd Simulation Of Anaerobic Granular Sludge Reactors: A Review, Camila D' Bastiani, David Kennedy, Anthony Reynolds Jan 2023

Cfd Simulation Of Anaerobic Granular Sludge Reactors: A Review, Camila D' Bastiani, David Kennedy, Anthony Reynolds

Articles

Anaerobic digestion processes can generate renewable energy in the form of biogas while treating organic wastewater. The generation of biogas within anaerobic digestion systems is directly linked to the mixing conditions inside the reactors. In high-rate reactors such as the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactor and the internal circulation (IC) reactor, the hydrodynamic behaviour will depend on the interactions between the wastewater, the biogas, and the biomass granules. Over the past few years, various researchers have used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the hydrodynamic behaviour in these types of reactors. This …

Designing industrial robots requires utmost attention to power consumption and safety, especially in today's environment where humans work closely with robots. However, due to their robust and weighty structures, most robotic manipulators are typically engineered with high-power systems to handle payloads and counteract gravity. This research develops a novel gravity compensator system that employs a single spring to counterbalance a multi-DOF manipulator. This system combines cam follower systems with a square root mechanism. We provide a general equation that applies to multiple degrees of freedom. Additionally, we designed and built a 3-DOF manipulator prototype. The experiment shows that our gravity …

Elevation-Distributed Multistage Reverse Osmosis Desalination With Seawater Pumped Storage, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2023

Elevation-Distributed Multistage Reverse Osmosis Desalination With Seawater Pumped Storage, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A seawater reverse osmosis (RO) plant layout based on multistage RO with stages located at different elevations above sea level is described. The plant uses the weight of a seawater column from pumped storage as head pressure for RO (gravity-driven multistage RO) or to supplement high-pressure pumps used in RO (gravity-assisted multistage RO). The use of gravitational force reduces the specific energy for RO compared to using high-pressure pumps. By locating the RO stages at different elevations based on demand sites, the total specific energy consumption for RO and permeate transport to different elevations above sea level is reduced from …

Triangular Fin Array Passively Actuated By Bimetallic Coils For Cubesat Thermal Control, Josh Cannon, Rydge B. Mulford, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

CubeSat thermal control can be especially demanding due to volume and size constraints, high power dissipation per unit surface area, and highly variable internal and external heat loads. As such, CubeSat developers must rely on thermal control systems that meet the specific requirements of their mission and environmental conditions. Deployable radiators enable satellites to increase their radiative surface area and to reveal highly emissive surfaces during times when increased heat rejection is desired. In colder conditions, when decreased heat loss is preferable, the radiators can be stowed. Passive thermal control systems are unpowered and can increase system reliability by not …

Pms And Gas Pollutants Removal By Electret Filter Media And Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs), Yu Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has been becoming a major concern worldwide because statistical data showed that the indoor concentrations of gas pollutants, e.g., volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matters (PMs) are often 2–5 times higher than that of outdoors. Especially, people spend 87% of their time indoors and increasing to more than 90% during COVID-19 pandemic. The high concentration of these indoor air pollutants is mainly due to the reduced air exchange rate for the design of energy-efficient building construction and the increased usage of furnishings, glues, paints, furnaces, etc., leading to VOC outgassing and particle emission. Evidence has …

Modified Reactive Sputter Deposition Of Titanium Nitride Thin Films Via Hipims With Kick-Pulse And Improvement Of The Structure-Zone Model, Andrew Miceli

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) sputtering methods have been commonplace in industry for several decades and widely studied in literature. Hard films of nitrides, such as titanium nitride (TiN), have been deposited using reactive DC sputtering onto cutting tools and medical devices extensively as well. For these applications, the films require excellent adhesion, high density, and high hardness. High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) has emerged over the last several years as a method to produce films with increased density and mechanical properties. Process-structure-property relationships for reactive HIPIMS are not yet well developed. Additionally, conventional HIPIMS suffers from relatively …

Optimizing wind farm layouts is an important step in designing an efficient wind farm. Optimizing wind farm layouts is also a difficult task due to computation times increasing with the number of turbines present in the farm. The most computationally expensive part of gradient- based optimization is calculating the gradient. In order to reduce the expense of gradient calculation, we performed a study on the use of sparsity in wind farm layout optimization. This paper presents the findings of the sparsity study and provides a method to use sparsity in wind farm layout optimization. We tested this sparsity method by …
