The Effect Of Store-To-Store Energy Transfers On The Global Dynamics Of Aircraft, Guilherme Mainieri Eymael Mar 2022

The Effect Of Store-To-Store Energy Transfers On The Global Dynamics Of Aircraft, Guilherme Mainieri Eymael

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This study analyzes the energy transfer mechanisms when nonlinear devices (stores) are attached to a linear model airplane. For that, a reduced-order model (ROM) was derived to simulate the first two flexible modes of vibration of the primary structure (aircraft) with one store in each wing. Each store can either be locked or unlocked. When locked, it only contributes as mass-effect, and when unlocked, it adds nonlinearity to the system. Simulations were then performed with either both stores locked, one store unlocked, or both stores unlocked. It was found that the attachment of nonlinear stores in the ROM changes the …

The Optimal Relationship Between Actuator Stiffness And Actuation Timing For A Passive Ankle Exoskeleton: An Opensim Simulation, Cody Anderson, Hafizur Rahman, Sara Myers

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Introduction

The passive ankle exoskeleton developed by Collins et al. (2015) reduced the metabolic cost of walking with an actuation-timing of ~16% of stance [1]; however, other actuation timings have not been extensively investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the optimal relationship between actuator-stiffness and actuation-timing for a passive ankle exoskeleton by using musculoskeletal modeling.

Methods

Kinematics and ground reaction forces were recorded while a healthy-young male walked on overground force-plates, and these data were exported to a musculoskeletal modeling software (OpenSim) for simulation. A passive ankle exoskeleton model was designed and integrated with a default …

Reducing Loading On The Contralateral Limb Using Human-In-The-Loop Optimization, Siena Senatore Mar 2022

Reducing Loading On The Contralateral Limb Using Human-In-The-Loop Optimization, Siena Senatore

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

In most everyday activities, we head towards a specific goal by updating our choices for a more direct path. However, there are specific clinical tasks where taking the direct path is more challenging. Clinical investigations of optimizing a prosthesis involve the assessment of multiple parameter settings through trial and error rather than goal-directed optimization. We investigate if a human-in-the-loop optimization algorithm can guide manual alterations to a prosthesis-simulating device to reduce the ground reaction force on the contralateral limb. In most participants, the optimal condition reduced the loading rate on the contralateral limb compared to the initial condition tested. These …

The objective of this work is to mitigate flaw formation in powder and laser-based directed energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing process through close-loop control of the meltpool temperature. In this work, the meltpool temperature was controlled by modulating the laser power based on feedback signals from a coaxial two-wavelength imaging pyrometer. The utility of closed-loop control in DED is demonstrated in the context of practically inspired trapezoid-shaped stainlesssteel parts (SS 316L). We demonstrate that parts built under closed-loop control have reduced variation in porosity and uniform microstructure compared to parts built under open-loop conditions. For example, post-process characterization showed that …

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

This research reports on the design, fabrication, and multiscale mechanical characterization of flexible, planar mechanical metamaterials with tailorable mechanical properties. The tunable mechanical behavior of the structures is realized through the introduction of orthogonal perforations with different geometric features. Various configurations of the perforations lead to a wide range of Poisson's ratios (from −0.8 to 0.4), load-bearing properties, and energy absorption capacities. The correlations between the configuration of the perforations and the auxetic response of the structures are highlighted through computational and experimental characterizations performed at multiple length scales. It is demonstrated that the local in-plane rotation of the solid …

Characterizing Fiber-Matrix Debond And Fiber Interaction Mechanisms By Full-Field Measurements, Robert Livingston, Behrad Koohbor Mar 2022

Characterizing Fiber-Matrix Debond And Fiber Interaction Mechanisms By Full-Field Measurements, Robert Livingston, Behrad Koohbor

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

An experimental approach is developed and utilized to characterize the fiber-matrix interfacial debonding mechanism and its effect on matrix cracking in unidirectional (UD) fiber composites. Local deformation response at the fiber-matrix interface is first studied by analyzing the strain fields developed in the vicinity of macro fibers in single-fiber samples. A practical approach for the identification of normal cohesive behavior at the fiber-matrix interface is presented and implemented in a finite element model that replicates the experimental findings. Fiber-to-fiber interaction, debond formation, and failure mechanisms in multiple fiber systems are then studied by varying the distance and angle between adjacent …

Bimodal Particle Distributions With Increased Thermal Conductivity For Solid Particles As Heat Transfer Media And Storage Materials, Chase E. Christen, Jesús Gómez-Hernández, Todd P. Otanicar

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Solid particles are being considered in several high temperature thermal energy storage systems and as heat transfer media in a variety of advanced power generation systems, particularly in concentrated solar power plants. The downside of such an approach is the low overall heat transfer coefficients caused by the inherently low thermal conductivity values of the low-cost solid media when coupled to heat exchanger for the power cycle working fluid. Choosing the right particle size distribution, emittance, and material of the solid media can all make a substantial difference in packed bed thermal conductivity. Current research though exclusively focuses on continuous …

Advances In Mechanical Metamaterials For Vibration Isolation: A Review, Mohammed Al Rifaie, Hasanain Abdulhadi, Ahsan Mian

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The adverse effect of mechanical vibration is inevitable and can be observed in machine components either on the long- or short-term of machine life-span based on the severity of oscillation. This in turn motivates researchers to find solutions to the vibration and its harmful influences through developing and creating isolation structures. The isolation is of high importance in reducing and controlling the high-amplitude vibration. Over the years, porous materials have been explored for vibration damping and isolation. Due to the closed feature and the non-uniformity in the structure, the porous materials fail to predict the vibration energy absorption and the …

Investigation Of Mechanical Properties Of Parts Fabricated With Gas- And Water-Atomized 304l Stainless Steel Powder In The Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process, M. Hossein Sehhat, Austin T. Sutton, Chia Hung Hung, Joseph William Newkirk, Ming-Chuan Leu

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of gas-atomized powder as the feedstock material for the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process is common in the additive manufacturing (AM) community. Although gas-atomization produces powder with high sphericity, its relatively expensive production cost is a downside for application in AM processes. Water atomization of powder may overcome this limitation due to its low-cost relative to the gas-atomization process. In this work, gas- and water-atomized 304L stainless steel powders were morphologically characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water-atomized powder had a wider particle size distribution and exhibited less sphericity. Measuring powder flowability using the Revolution Powder …

Fourth-Order Adjoint Sensitivity And Uncertainty Analysis Of An Oecd/Nea Reactor Physics Benchmark: Ii. Computed Response Uncertainties, Ruixian Fang, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This work quantifies the impact of the most important 4th-order sensitivities of the leakage response of a polyethylene-reflected plutonium (PERP) reactor physics benchmark with respect to the benchmark’s 180 group-averaged microscopic total cross sections, on the expected value, variance and skewness of the benchmark’s leakage response. This work shows that, as the standard deviations of the cross sections increase, the contributions of the 4th-order sensitivities to the response’s expected value and variance become significantly larger than the corresponding contributions stemming from the 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-order sensitivities. Considering a uniform 5% relative standard deviation for all microscopic total cross sections, …

Inverted Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (Ircci) With Methanol Fuel & Reactivity Enhancers, Musharrat Chowdhury, Adam Dempsey

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) is a low temperature combustion regime that has demonstrated ultra-low NOx and soot while achieving high thermal efficiency. RCCI uses a low reactivity premixed charge which is ignited via direct injection of a high reactivity fuel. The aim is to create a nearly homogeneous charge but maintain control over the combustion timing via the ratio between the premixed and direct injected fuel, hence controlling global reactivity via reactivity gradients in-cylinder. RCCI combustion with gasoline as the premixed fuel and diesel as the high reactivity fuel has shown good combustion timing controllability. However, RCCI with alcohol …
