Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electric solid propellants are advanced solid chemical rocket propellants that can be controlled (ignited, throttled and extinguished) through the application and removal of an electric current. This behavior may enable the propellant to be used in multimode propulsion systems utilizing the ablative pulsed plasma thruster. The performance of an electric solid propellant operating in an electrothermal ablation-fed pulsed plasma thruster was investigated using an inverted pendulum micro-newton thrust stand. The impulse bit and specific impulse of the device using the electric solid propellant were measured for short-duration test runs of 100 pulses and longer-duration runs to end-of-life, at energy levels …

Master's Theses
The objectives of this study were to (1) develop a non-invasive method (referred to as Smart Photo-Tape) to calculate participant-specific upper arm, forearm, and hand segment inertial properties (SIPs) (e.g. mass, center of mass, and radii of gyration) and (2) use those Smart Photo-Tape properties in inverse dynamics (ID) analyses to calculate injury-related pitching arm kinetics. Five 20- to 23- year-old baseball pitchers were photographed holding a baseball and analyzed using the Smart Photo-Tape method to obtain 3-D inertial properties for their upper arm, forearm, and hand. The upper arm and forearm segments were modelled as stacked elliptic cylinders and …
Simulating Particle Packing During Powder Spreading For Selective Laser Melted Additive Manufacturing Using The Discrete Element Method In Abaqus, Priscilla Ng
Master's Theses
Metal additive manufacturing allows for the rapid production of complex parts that are otherwise impractical using conventional subtractive manufacturing techniques. Applications for additive manufacturing span across a broad array of industries including aerospace, automotive, and medical, among many others. One metric of printing success is material properties, including part density. While there has been extensive research completed for the density of printed parts, there is little published work concerning powder packing density on the build plate associated with powder spreading.
In this thesis, a Discrete Element Method (DEM) model was created in Abaqus to simulate the spreading behavior of particles …

Turbulence Investigations In The Core-Flow Of An Internal Combustion Engine, James R. Macdonald
Turbulence Investigations In The Core-Flow Of An Internal Combustion Engine, James R. Macdonald
Dissertations
Turbulence significantly impacts the operation of energy conversion devices. In internal combustion (IC) engines, mixing, heat transfer, and combustion are all strongly dependent on the turbulence inside the cylinder. Consequently, knowledge of the state of turbulence is critical for improving our understanding and modeling of engine processes.
Turbulence states may be determined through analysis of the Reynolds stress tensor, which can in turn be experimentally quantified using velocity data. In this research, stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (stereo-PIV) experiments were conducted in a single-cylinder, motored engine with optical access to measure the two-dimensional, three-component (2D-3C) velocity fields throughout the compression stroke. …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Free Water Surface Evaporation In Case Of Natural Convection, Hassan Fagehi
Dissertations
Evaporation of water can be considered an essential part of the hydrological cycle. It is important for many technological applications such as industrial cooling towers, air conditioning, solid material drying, distillation, and liquid film cooling. Moreover, the interfacial convection caused by the density gradient belongs to Rayleigh convection, which plays an important role in the evaporation process by means of intensifying heat and mass transfer, as in an isopropanol‒water system. In addition, natural convection, which can be defined as a buoyancy-driven flow, is important in astrophysics, geophysics, and numerous engineering applications such as solar energy systems, cooling of electrical equipment, …
