Effects On Strength And Corrosive Characteristics Of Hardened Cement Paste Using Rice Husk And Sugarcane Bagasse, Travis D. Garrett May 2019

Effects On Strength And Corrosive Characteristics Of Hardened Cement Paste Using Rice Husk And Sugarcane Bagasse, Travis D. Garrett

Master's Theses

Cement is one of the most used building materials in the world. The production of ordinary Portland cement contributes to the release of harmful greenhouse gasses. In an effort to reduce these emissions, different materials are being evaluated for their use as partial replacements for ordinary Portland cement. Rice husk and sugarcane bagasse are agricultural waste products and large amounts of these are currently landfilled, making them inexpensive and available. When combusted at high temperatures they form rice husk ash and sugarcane bagasse ash that have pozzolanic characteristics. The high silicon dioxide in these products makes them good options to …

Modeling The Effect Of A Compartment Fire On Spaces Adjacent To A Bulkhead With And Without Attachments, Carl E. Hendrickson Ii May 2019

Modeling The Effect Of A Compartment Fire On Spaces Adjacent To A Bulkhead With And Without Attachments, Carl E. Hendrickson Ii

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Structural fire protection is an integral component of shipboard fire safety. There are national and international regulations that delineate requirements for the insulation placed throughout ships. The attachments that penetrate the insulation for hanging wires and pipes can disrupt the integrity of the division, and cause a failure to adhere to the regulations. This problem will be analyzed by using a simplified lumped capacitance model and ANSYS FLUENT CFD. A standard time-temperature fire curve is applied to the fire side of the enclosure. The thermal conductivity of the insulation and steel are made to be temperature dependent. The density of …

Using Thermal Gradient Measurements To Compare Bath Temperature And Agitation Effects On The Quenching Performance Of Palm Oil, Canola Oil And A Conventional Petroleum Oil, Bozidar Matijevic, Bruno F. Canale, Božidar Lišcic, George Totten May 2019

Using Thermal Gradient Measurements To Compare Bath Temperature And Agitation Effects On The Quenching Performance Of Palm Oil, Canola Oil And A Conventional Petroleum Oil, Bozidar Matijevic, Bruno F. Canale, Božidar Lišcic, George Totten

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A proprietary Liscic/Petrofer cylindrical Inconel 600 probe of 50-mm diameter and 200-mm length which was instrumented with three thermocouples on the same radius of the crosssection at the middle of the length was used to determine the differences in quenching performance of two vegetable oils, palm oil and canola oil, and they were compared to a locally produced conventional petroleum oil quenchant. The cooling curves and heat transfer performance of these oils were determined at different bath temperatures and agitation rates. The work was performed at the Quenching Research Centre located at the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering, University of Zagreb, …

Mechanical Properties And Applications Of Recycled Polycarbonate Particle Material Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing, Matthew J. Reich, Aubrey Woern, Nagendra Gautam Tanikella, Joshua M. Pearce May 2019

Mechanical Properties And Applications Of Recycled Polycarbonate Particle Material Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing, Matthew J. Reich, Aubrey Woern, Nagendra Gautam Tanikella, Joshua M. Pearce

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Past work has shown that particle material extrusion (fused particle fabrication (FPF)/fused granular fabrication (FGF)) has the potential for increasing the use of recycled polymers in 3D printing. This study extends this potential to high-performance (high-mechanical-strength and heat-resistant) polymers using polycarbonate (PC). Recycled PC regrind of approximately 25 mm2 was 3D printed with an open-source Gigabot X and analyzed. A temperature and nozzle velocity matrix was used to find useful printing parameters, and a print test was used to maximize the output for a two-temperature stage extruder for PC. ASTM type 4 tensile test geometries as well as ASTM-approved …

Design And Control Of Fiber Encapsulation Additive Manufacturing, Matt Saari May 2019

Design And Control Of Fiber Encapsulation Additive Manufacturing, Matt Saari

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

This work presents the design, development, and analysis of the Fiber Encapsulation Additive Manufacturing (FEAM) system developed at the Laboratory for Additive Manufacturing Robotics \& Automation at the Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University. The innovation introduced by FEAM is the ability to insert a continuous fiber of different material into the flowing extrudate. Correctly positioning the fiber feed inside the extrudate while turning the fiber in arbitrary directions is a critical aspect of the technology. This will allow for the full exploitation of the capabilities of the FEAM technology to produce robotic components that actuate and sense. …

Breakage Modeling Of Needle-Shaped Particles Using The Discrete Element Method, Rohit Kumar, William Ketterhagen, Avik Sarkar, Jennifer S. Curtis, Carl Wassgren May 2019

Breakage Modeling Of Needle-Shaped Particles Using The Discrete Element Method, Rohit Kumar, William Ketterhagen, Avik Sarkar, Jennifer S. Curtis, Carl Wassgren

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper models the breakage of large aspect ratio particles in an attrition cell using discrete element method (DEM) and population balance (PB) models. The particles are modeled in DEM as sphero-cylinders. The stresses within each particle are calculated along the particle length using beam theory and the particle breaks into two parts if the stress exceeds a critical value. Thus, the size distribution changes with time within the DEM model. The DEM model is validated against previously published experimental data.

The simulations demonstrate that particle breakage occurs primarily in front of the attrition cell blades, with the breakage rate …

Computation Of Flow Fields Due To Single- And Twin-Jet Impingement, Xiang Zhang May 2019

Computation Of Flow Fields Due To Single- And Twin-Jet Impingement, Xiang Zhang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

The thesis consists of two parts. The first part focuses on numerical simulations and their comparison with experimental data for single-jet impingement on ground. Angles between the axisymmetric jet and impingement surface considered are 15, 30 and 90 degree. It is shown that both the k-epsilon and Wray-Agarwal (WA) model can predict the flow fields in good agreement with the experimental results. The second part extends the first part to twin-jet normal impingement on the ground. It focuses on numerical simulation of fountains formed by the twin-jet impingement. The fountains can be normal straight upward when the two jets are …
