Multi-Scale Modeling Of Viscoelastic Thin-Ply Composites, Milinda Madhusanka Yapa Yapa Hamillage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thin ply composites have been under the microscope of researchers for around two decades since Kawabe introduced the thin ply technology, in the Industrial Technology Center in Fukui, Japan. With the advancement of the technological aspects of manufacturing carbon fiber composites the tow spreading has improved so much as to reduce the thickness of a conventional ply up to even six-fold. Over the years carbon fiber composites have gained interest in space structures for reinforcement purposes in antennas, as structural elements that store strain energy and support the deployment of deployable structures, and in reflector concepts. Now thin-ply composites are …

Metabolic Cost Calculations Of Gait Using Musculoskeletal Energy Models, A Comparison Study, Anne D. Koelewijn, Dieter Heinrich, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper compares predictions of metabolic energy expenditure in gait using seven metabolic energy expenditure models to assess their correlation with experimental data. Ground reaction forces, marker data, and pulmonary gas exchange data were recorded for six walking trials at combinations of two speeds, 0.8 m/s and 1.3 m/s, and three inclines, -8% (downhill), level, and 8% (uphill). The metabolic cost, calculated with the metabolic energy models was compared to the metabolic cost from the pulmonary gas exchange rates. A repeated measures correlation showed that all models correlated well with experimental data, with correlations of at least 0.9. The model …

Improving Turbine Performance: A Contribution To The Understanding Of Heat Transfer And Vortical Structures In Staggered Pin Fin Arrays, Marcel Otto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through the comparison of flow structures, velocity contours, turbulence statistics, and additional flow quantities, the error sources of RANS are qualitatively described. The findings in this work will help gas turbine design engineers to tweak their turbulence models and give guidance on the interpretation of their results. The novelty is the application of the transient TLC method on this type of geometry as well as the near-wall PIV measurements. The advancements in additive manufacturing disrupt the classic turbine cooling development for casted airfoils. More and more complicated shapes and cooling schemes are possible. Nonetheless, a detailed physical understanding of fundamental …

Compressible Turbulent Reactions For Hypersonic Propulsion Applications, Jonathan Sosa Jan 2019

Compressible Turbulent Reactions For Hypersonic Propulsion Applications, Jonathan Sosa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work presents the first measurement of turbulent burning velocities of a highly-turbulent compressible standing flame induced by shock-driven turbulence in a Turbulent Shock Tube. High-speed schlieren, chemiluminescence, PIV, and dynamic pressure measurements are made to quantify flame-turbulence interaction for high levels of turbulence at elevated temperatures and pressure. Distributions of turbulent velocities, vorticity and turbulent strain are provided for regions ahead and behind the standing flame. The turbulent flame speed is directly measured for the high-Mach standing turbulent flame. From measurements of the flame turbulent speed and turbulent Mach number, transition into a non-linear compressibility regime at turbulent Mach …

Shock Tube Investigations Of Novel Combustion Environments Towards A Carbon-Neutral Future, Samuel Barak Jan 2019

Shock Tube Investigations Of Novel Combustion Environments Towards A Carbon-Neutral Future, Samuel Barak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) cycles are being investigated for the future of power generation. These cycles will contribute to a carbon-neutral future to combat the effects of climate change. These direct-fired closed cycles will produce power without adding significant pollutants to the atmosphere. For these cycles to be efficient, they will need to operate at significantly higher pressures (e.g., 300 atm for Allam Cycle) than existing systems (typically less than 40 atm). There is limited knowledge on combustion at these pressures or at the high dilution of carbon dioxide. Nominal fuel choices for gas turbines include natural gas and syngas …

Probing The Influence Of Cx43 And Glucose On Endothelial Biomechanics, Md Mydul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Endothelial cells (ECs) form the innermost layer of all vasculature and constantly receive both biochemical and biomechanical signals, yielding a plethora of biomechanical responses. In response to various biochemical or biomechanical cues, ECs have been documented to generate biomechanical responses such as tractions and intercellular stresses between the cell and substrate and between adjacent cells in a confluent monolayer, respectively. Thus far, the ability of endothelial tight junctions and adherens junctions to transmit intercellular stresses has been actively investigated, but the role of gap junctions is currently unknown. In addition, there is no report of the independent influence of hyperglycemia …

Developing A Real-World Vehicle Trip Dataset Through Public Travel Surveys And Applying It To Battery Electric Vehicle Performance Study, Nizar Ali Khemri

Wayne State University Dissertations

Real-world second-by-second vehicle driving cycle data is very important for research and development of the traditional fuel-powered vehicles, the emerging electric vehicles, and the hybrid vehicles. A project solely dedicated to generating such information would be extremely costly and time-consuming. Alternatively, we introduce a method to develop such a database by utilizing two publicly available passenger vehicle travel surveys; the 2004-2006 Puget Sound Regional Commission (PSRC) Travel Survey and the 2011 Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Travel Survey. The two surveys complement each other – the former is in low time resolution but covers vehicle driving and non-driving operation for over …

Energy Analysis For Process Parameter Prediction Of Direct Energy Deposition Metal Additive Manufacturing, Daniel John Pulscher

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Metal Additive Manufacturing with the Direct Energy Deposition (DED) process allows for rapid prototyping and low-volume custom manufacturing of complex geometries at a lower cost than traditional manufacturing methods. Direct energy deposition is a complex process having many inter-related process parameters that effect the overall quality and mechanical properties of the build. When new powder feedstocks are used, calibrating these process parameters is typically done empirically in trials that can contain more than a hundred different combinations of parameters. This time-consuming process can be reduced by performing an analytical analysis on how the energy from the laser transfers into the …

Sustainable Production Through Balancing Trade-Offs Among Three Metrics In Flow Shop Scheduling, Amin Abedini, Wei Li, Fazleena Badurdeen, Ibrahim S. Jawahir Jan 2019

Sustainable Production Through Balancing Trade-Offs Among Three Metrics In Flow Shop Scheduling, Amin Abedini, Wei Li, Fazleena Badurdeen, Ibrahim S. Jawahir

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

In sustainable manufacturing, inconsistencies exist among objectives defined in triple-bottom-lines (TBL) of economy, society, and environment. Analogously, inconsistencies exist in flow shop scheduling among three objectives of minimizing total completion time (TCT), maximum completion time (MCT), and completion time variance (CTV), respectively. For continuous functions, the probability is zero to achieve the objectives at their optimal values, so is it at their worst values. Therefore, with inconsistencies among individual objectives of discrete functions, it is more meaningful and feasible to seek a solution with high probabilities that system performance varies within the …

Designing And Redesigning Products, Processes, And Systems For A Helical Economy, Ryan Bradley, Ibrahim S. Jawahir Jan 2019

Designing And Redesigning Products, Processes, And Systems For A Helical Economy, Ryan Bradley, Ibrahim S. Jawahir

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

The Circular Economy (CE) concept has promised to unlock trillions of dollars in business value while driving a significant reduction in the world’s resource consumption and anthropogenic emissions. However, CE mainly lives in ambiguity in the manufacturing domain because CE does not address the changes needed across all of the fundamental elements of manufacturing: products, processes, and systems. Conceptually, CE is grounded in the concept of closed-loop material flows that fit within ecological limits. This grounding translates into a steady state economy, a result that is not an option for the significant portion of the world living in poverty. Therefore, …

Rotary Friction Welding Versus Fusion Butt Welding Of Plastic Pipes – Feasibility And Energy Perspective, Ramsey F. Hamade, Tarek R. Andari, Ali H. Ammouri, Ibrahim S. Jawahir Jan 2019

Rotary Friction Welding Versus Fusion Butt Welding Of Plastic Pipes – Feasibility And Energy Perspective, Ramsey F. Hamade, Tarek R. Andari, Ali H. Ammouri, Ibrahim S. Jawahir

Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing Faculty Publications

According to the Plastics Pipe Institute, butt fusion is the most widely used method for joining lengths of PE pipe and pipe to PE fittings “by heat fusion” (https://plasticpipe.org/pdf/chapter09.pdf). However, butt-welding is not energy-cognizant from the point of view of a phase-change fabrication method. This is because the source of heating is external (heater plate). The initial heating and subsequent maintenance at relatively high temperature (above 200 C for welding of high-density polyethylene pipe) is energy intensive. Rotary friction welding, on the other hand focuses the energy where and when as needed because it uses electric motor to generate mechanical …

Design And Manipulation Of A Power-Generating System With High-Temperature Fuel Cells For Hypersonic Applications, Jack Randolph Chalker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Current hypersonic vehicles tend to be incapable of producing onboard power with traditional generators due to their use of supersonic combusting ramjets (scramjets). Because of this, they seek additional energy sources for supporting advanced electronics or other auxiliary power-dependent devices while requiring elaborate thermal management systems to combat temperatures exceeding 700ºC. The incorporation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFCs) stacks is an efficient solution, capable of generating large quantities of power through the use of natural fuel sources at high temperatures. Developments in this thesis include the design, construction, and support of a system operating at hypersonic-environment conditions with a …

Unsteady Effects Of A Pulsed Blowing System On An Endwall Vortex, Molly Hope Donovan Jan 2019

Unsteady Effects Of A Pulsed Blowing System On An Endwall Vortex, Molly Hope Donovan

The low-pressure turbine is an important component of a gas turbine engine, powering the low-pressure spool which provides the bulk of the thrust in medium- and high-bypass engines. It is also a significant fraction of the engine weight and complexity as it can comprise up to a third of the total engine weight. One way to drastically reduce the weight of the low-pressure turbine is to utilize high lift blades. To advance high-lift technology, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) designed the L2F blade profile, which was implemented in the linear cascade at AFRL/RQT’s low speed wind tunnel facility. The …

Detection Of Ddh In Infants And Children Using Audible Acoustics, Tanvir Hassan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Detection of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in infants and children is important as it leads to permanent hip instability. Current methods for detecting DDH, such as ultrasound and x-rays, are relatively expensive and need qualified medical personnel to administer the test. Furthermore, x-ray ionizing radiation can have potential harmful effects. In the current study, an acoustic non-invasive and simple approach was investigated for detection of DDH. Different benchtop simplified models and pig models were constructed and tested. Models were stimulated with band-limited white acoustic noise (10-2500 Hz) and the response of the models was measured. The power spectrum …

Spectral Methods For Hamiltonian Systems And Their Applications, Lewei Zhao Jan 2019

Spectral Methods For Hamiltonian Systems And Their Applications, Lewei Zhao

Wayne State University Dissertations

Hamiltonian systems typically arise as models of conservative physical systems and have many applications. Our main emphasis is using spectral methods to preserve both symplectic structure and energy up to machine error in long time. An engery error estimation is given for a type of Hamiltonian systems with polynomial nonlinear part, which is numerical verified by solving a Henon-Heiles systems. Three interesting applications are presented : the first one is the N-body problems. The second one is approximation for Weyl's Law and the third one is simulating quantum cooling in an optomechanical system to study the dissipative dynamics. Moreover, nonsmooth …

Scientists and engineers have observed for some time that tidal amplitudes at many locations are shifting considerably due to non-astronomical factors. Here we review comprehensively these important changes in tidal properties, many of which remain poorly understood. Over long geological time-scales, tectonic processes drive variations in basin size, depth, and shape, and hence the resonant properties of ocean basins. On shorter geological time-scales, changes in oceanic tidal properties are dominated by variations in water depth. A growing number of studies have identified widespread, sometimes regionally-coherent, positive and negative trends in tidal constituents and levels during the 19th, 20th and early …

Development Of A Neural Network-Based Object Detection For Multirotor Target Tracking, Spencer Harwood Jan 2019

Development Of A Neural Network-Based Object Detection For Multirotor Target Tracking, Spencer Harwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have, for the past few decades, seen an increased popularity in industry and research centres. Despite this intense utilization by both markets there exists an active demand for the development of autonomous guidance, navigation, and control strategies. One need relates to the achievement of a high level of autonomy to identify and track a target object. An elective technique for this set of tasks is neural networks. In the development and study of these networks there is a distinct lack of substantive validation techniques to qualify network performances when implemented in a multirotor UAV. This thesis …
