Evaluating And Augmenting Fuel-Saving Benefits Obtained In Aircraft Formation Flight, Wendy Awele Okolo Dec 2015

Evaluating And Augmenting Fuel-Saving Benefits Obtained In Aircraft Formation Flight, Wendy Awele Okolo

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

When an aircraft flies, it generates wake vortices, which induce a non-uniform wind distribution in its wake. A trail aircraft, placed in the wake of a lead's aircraft vortices experiences this non-uniform wind distribution with varying directions and magnitudes, depending on the location within the wake. It has been demonstrated that there is a "sweet spot" within the wake of a leader in which a trail can experience upwash which leads to reduced drag. Through this mechanism, aircraft can save significant amounts of fuel by flying at the sweet spot of the lead aircraft's wake. This dissertation provides two metrics …

Design Of A Meta-Material With Targeted Nonlinear Deformation Response, Zachary Satterfield Dec 2015

Design Of A Meta-Material With Targeted Nonlinear Deformation Response, Zachary Satterfield

All Theses

The M1 Abrams tank contains track pads consist of a high density rubber. This rubber fails prematurely due to heat buildup caused by the hysteretic nature of elastomers. It is therefore desired to replace this elastomer by a meta-material that has equivalent nonlinear deformation characteristics without this primary failure mode. A meta-material is an artificial material in the form of a periodic structure that exhibits behavior that differs from its constitutive material. After a thorough literature review, topology optimization was found as the only method used to design meta-materials. Further investigation determined topology optimization as an infeasible method to design …

Bayesian Statistics And Information Fusion For Gps-Denied Navigation, Brian Lee Copp Dec 2015

Bayesian Statistics And Information Fusion For Gps-Denied Navigation, Brian Lee Copp

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

It is well known that satellite navigation systems are vulnerable to disruption due to jamming, spoofing, or obstruction of the signal. The desire for robust navigation of aircraft in GPS-denied environments has motivated the development of feature-aided navigation systems, in which measurements of \textit{environmental features} are used to complement the dead reckoning solution produced by an inertial navigation system. Examples of environmental features which can be exploited for navigation include star positions, terrain elevation, terrestrial wireless signals, and features extracted from photographic data. Feature-aided navigation represents a particularly challenging estimation problem because the measurements are often strongly nonlinear, and the …

Two Phase Flow Cfd Analysis Of Refrigerants In A Condenser Pipe For Prediction Of Pressure Drop And Pumping Power, Aniket Ramchandra Kalambe

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

With the ever growing need of achieving optimum cooling at chip level at the expense of low input pumping power and keeping in check the Global Warming Potential (GWP) & Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) has given rise to “two-phase on chip cooling” with nature friendly refrigerants. Currently, “air-cooling” and “single-phase water on-chip cooling” using copper micro-channel coolers are being used but “two-phase on chip cooling” with refrigerants have a very large scale & long lasting advantages over the prior. However, due to the perceived complexity of modelling two-phase flow, this solution is not yet well understood. Modelling of two phase …

An Invastigation Of Band-Limited Fluid Damper Configuration Using Lumped Parameter Modeling, Ye Hong Dec 2015

An Invastigation Of Band-Limited Fluid Damper Configuration Using Lumped Parameter Modeling, Ye Hong

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Vehicle suspension system is one of the key factors related to the vehicle dynamic characteristic. The fine tuning of suspension system between vehicle handling and ride comfort is not only a trade-off between these two aspects, but also, has its impact on vehicle safety and durability. For an optimal damper performance, the damper needs to generate sufficient damping force at maneuvering frequency (< 2 Hz); and it also needs to generate less damping force, which allow spring to filter the high frequency noise (> 2 Hz) generated by vehicle travels along rough road condition at speed. In order to achieve such performance, a lumped parameter model of Band-Limited Damper is proposed. Frequency response of both Conventional Damper and Band-Limited Damper are …

Computational Analysis Of Enhancing Heat Transfer In A 3-D Stacked Die Using Different Finned Heat Sink, Deekshith Pittala

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

3D die stacking is an exciting new technology that increases the transistor’s density by integrating two or more dies vertically with a dense high – speed interface. The result of 3D die stacking is a significant reduction of interconnect both within a die and across dies in a system. The objective of the thermal design requirement for a 3D stacked die package is to maintain the junction temperatures of the devices at or below specified limits. Installing the Heat sink aid the heat transfer activity from a package. The extent of cooling and the junction temperatures vary if the designs …

Experimental Study On Effects Of Segregated Cooling Provisioning On Thermal Performance Of Information Technology Servers In Air Cooled Data Centers, Ashwin Venugopal Siddarth

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Modern Information Technology (IT) equipment are typically assumed to operate in quiescent airflow conditions in an uncontained data center facility. In this study, the multi-scaled thermal management strategies are reconsidered at the IT chassis and rack level for a containment system. For an ideal containment configuration of airflow provisioning the entirety of conditioned air provided by the Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) unit would flow through the IT equipment and return back to the CRAC. But in actuality a lack of interfaced airflow distribution exists between the amount of conditioned air provisioned to the rack and the volume capacity ingested …

A Model Analysis Of Sand Insertion In Hydraulic Fractures, Ya Hao Dec 2015

A Model Analysis Of Sand Insertion In Hydraulic Fractures, Ya Hao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is a well-stimulation technology to create large volume of fracture formation in rocks for gas and/or oil extraction. This technology has been applied to commercially exploit natural gas in unconventional shale reservoirs that contain immense quantity but low density of hydrocarbon sources. The productivity can be largely dependent on the connectivity of fractures that must stay open. However, upon initial hydraulic fracturing, the fractures would be closed due to high hydrostatic pressure deep inside the crust. Sand must be pumped into the fractures to keep them open. An in-depth understanding of the sand distribution and its dependence …

Magnetic Field Enhanced Thermal Conductivity Analysis Of Magnetic Nanofluids, Christopher Allen Dec 2015

Magnetic Field Enhanced Thermal Conductivity Analysis Of Magnetic Nanofluids, Christopher Allen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The magnetic properties of four water-based nanofluids consisting of Al2O3, CuO, Fe3O4, and SiO2 were exploited to analyze the effect of the application of an external magnetic field on the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. When the magnetic field is applied, the magnetic dipole moments of the particles align and the particles come in contact with each other and form chains in the direction of the applied magnetic field. When parallel to the direction of heat flow, the magnetic field causes the effective thermal conductivity in the direction of the magnetic field to increase. A higher thermally conductive fluid can …

Gaf Glass Mat Splice Table Improvements, Grant Haug, Kevin Lansang, Ronald Lam, Michael Mooney

Mechanical Engineering

The GAF asphalt shingle production line in Shafter, CA requires continuous operation in order to maximize production efficiency. The assembly line process begins with feeding a large roll of fiberglass web into an accumulator. However, once the fiberglass roll approaches the end, it must be spliced with a new roll in order to maintain continuous feed into the production line. The splicing process must be fast and reliable to prevent any delay of the production line. Currently, this process is performed by two workers who manually feed the new fiberglass roll, align the two mats, cut the mats, apply glue …

Co-Design Of Dynamic Real-Time Scheduling And Cooperative Control For Human-Agent Collaboration Systems Based On Mutual Trust, Xiaotian Wang Dec 2015

Co-Design Of Dynamic Real-Time Scheduling And Cooperative Control For Human-Agent Collaboration Systems Based On Mutual Trust, Xiaotian Wang

All Theses

Mutual trust is a key factor in human-human collaboration. Inspired by this social interaction, we analyze human-agent mutual trust in the collaboration of one human and (semi)autonomous multi-agent systems. In the thesis, we derive time-series human-agent mutual trust models based on results from human factors engineering. To avoid both over- trust and under-trust, we set up dynamic timing models for the multi-agent scheduling problem and develop necessary and sufficient conditions to test the schedulability of the human multi-agent collaborative task. Furthermore, we extend the collaboration between one human and multiple agents into the collaboration between multi-human network and swarm-based agents …

A Novel Approach To Evaluating Compact Finite Differences And Similar Tridiagonal Schemes On Gpu-Accelerated Clusters, Ashwin Trikuta Srinath

All Theses

Compact finite difference schemes are widely used in the direct numerical simulation of fluid flows for their ability to better resolve the small scales of turbulence. However, they can be expensive to evaluate and difficult to parallelize. In this work, we present an approach for the computation of compact finite differences and similar tridiagonal schemes on graphics processing units (GPUs). We present a variant of the cyclic reduction algorithm for solving the tridiagonal linear systems that arise in such numerical schemes. We study the impact of the matrix structure on the cyclic reduction algorithm and show that precomputing forward reduction …

Computational Model For Steady State Simulation Of A Plate-Fin Heat Exchanger, Ajit Rajesh Desai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

High performance heat transfer devices are critical components in hybrid power generation systems. The design of a Recuperator for 'waste heat recovery' is crucial for reducing the operating cost of a hybrid system. Plate-fin heat exchangers occupy a special position among high performance heat exchangers because of the compactness, efficiency and flexibility they offer. The performance of these heat exchange devices is typically very sensitive to fluid property variations, axial conduction and heat losses to environment. This thesis presents a numerical model of a plate fin heat exchanger in which fluid property variations including temperature driven changes in specific heat …

Design Of A Physical Windkessel Model For Use In Lvad In-Vitro Benchtop Modeling, Kyle W. Beggs

HIM 1990-2015

Despite improved life expectancy compared to medical management alone, Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) recipients show survival rates of 80% at 12 months and 70% at 24 months. A large portion of VAD-associated mortality results from increased risk of stroke with an event frequency reported between 14-47%. Recent concerns have been raised about unprecedented increases of thrombus formation in VAD recipients with subsequent reports pointing towards implantation techniques as a critical contributor to these events. Thus, the overall prognosis with mechanical support can improve by advancing the surgeon’s approach to VAD implantation. Previous studies using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) were aimed …

Sparse Aperture Speckle Interferometry Telescope Active Optics Control System, Matthew Clause Dec 2015

Sparse Aperture Speckle Interferometry Telescope Active Optics Control System, Matthew Clause

Master's Theses

A conventional large aperture telescope required for binary star research is typically cost prohibitive. A prototype active optics system was created and fitted to a telescope frame using relatively low cost components. The active optics system was capable of tipping, tilting, and elevating the mirrors to align reflected star light. The low cost mirror position actuators have a resolution of 31 nm, repeatable to within 16 nm. This is accurate enough to perform speckle analysis for the visible light spectrum. The mirrors used in testing were not supported with a whiffletree and produced trefoil-like aberrations which made phasing two mirrors …

Predicted Stresses In A Ball-Grid-Array (Bga)/Column-Grid-Array (Cga) Assembly With A Low Modulus Solder At Its Ends, Ephraim Suhir, Reza Ghaffarian Dec 2015

Predicted Stresses In A Ball-Grid-Array (Bga)/Column-Grid-Array (Cga) Assembly With A Low Modulus Solder At Its Ends, Ephraim Suhir, Reza Ghaffarian

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple, easy-to-use and physically meaningful predictive model is suggested for the assessment of thermal stresses in a ball-grid-array or a column-grid-array with a low modulus solder material at the peripheral portions of the assembly. It is shown that the application of such a design can lead to a considerable relief in the interfacial stresses, even to an extent that inelastic strains in the solder joints could be avoided. If this happens, the fatigue strength of the bond and of the assembly as a whole will be improved dramatically: low-cycle fatigue conditions will be replaced by the elastic fatigue condition, …
