Stress Corrosion Cracking In Polymer Matrix Glass Fiber Composites, Jonathan Kosak
Stress Corrosion Cracking In Polymer Matrix Glass Fiber Composites, Jonathan Kosak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the use of Polymer Matrix Glass Fiber Composites ever expanding, understanding conditions that lead to failure before expected service life is of increasing importance. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) has proven to be one such example of conditions found in use in high voltage transmission line applications that leads to brittle fracture of polymer matrix composites.
SCC has been proven to be the result of acid buildup on the lines due to corona discharges and water buildup. This acid leaches minerals from the fibers, leading to fracture at low loads and service life. In order to combat this problem, efforts …

Senior design becomes the culminating experience in which students demonstrate the skills and habits acquired through PITCH courses. Student outcomes for the project were established based on an extensive survey of employers, alumni and faculty. Communication instruments include technical memoranda, poster …
Prediction Of Tribological Behavior Of Candidate Materials For Rotor Seals, John W. Franzino, Will F. Michul
Prediction Of Tribological Behavior Of Candidate Materials For Rotor Seals, John W. Franzino, Will F. Michul
Materials Engineering
To reduce high costs associated with manufacturing and testing materials for rotor seals, a procedure needs to be developed to quickly and accurately test candidate materials as they are released. The test should reduce the amount of fabrication required and model working conditions in order to accurately assess the tribological behavior of candidate materials. A possible solution was examined that utilized a rig meant to model operational stresses and wear. Compression modulus data was then taken in order to quantify the accumulation of damage due to microcracking, the primary mode of failure, through a damage index parameter. Testing results concluded …

Peek Wear Test System, Michael Brown, Mason Chellemi, Allian Roman
Mechanical Engineering
The wear characteristics of PEEK carbon fiber composites are not well understood in comparison to high strength materials in common use such as steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber epoxy. This lack of understanding limits the applications in which the superior strength to weight ratio and stiffness of PEEK carbon fiber composites may be utilized with confidence to situations in which there are no significant bearing surface interactions between nearby components. The objective of this project was to design, build, and test a machine that is capable of evaluating the behavior of PEEK carbon fiber composites in a long term, high …

A Study On The Vibrational Performance Characteristics Of An E22 Isolator After Outgassing And Bake-Out, Alma Melendez
A Study On The Vibrational Performance Characteristics Of An E22 Isolator After Outgassing And Bake-Out, Alma Melendez
Master's Theses
The launch environment experiences many vibration, shock, and acoustic loads. A great concern is the high random vibration levels that can damage components and spacecraft structures, which can cause a mission failure. An effective method of reducing high frequency energy is using isolators. Overall, the need for vibration isolation has been increasing because there has been an increase in the use of mechanisms in which vibrations are prevalent. In addition, there has not been extensive research on the effects of isolators that are outgassed and cured. Therefore, it is important to investigate and understand the vibrational effects on isolators. It …

Underrepresented minority students pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related degrees at much lower rates compared to other segments of the population. To attract minority students, schools with STEM programs have resorted to myriad strategies such as cohorts, scholarships, mentoring, summer bridges, etc. Some schools have also sought innovative ways to develop a pipeline for graduates of two-year technical degree programs to matriculate into their four-year STEM programs and complete the remaining coursework leading to a BAT or BS degree. The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) has adopted this latter innovative approach to increasing student enrollment in STEM …

Tailsitter Heading Estimation Using A Magnetometer, Timothy Mclain, Jason M. Beach, Matthew E. Argyle, Randall W. Beard, Stephen Morris
Faculty Publications
The tailsitter aircraft merges the endurance and speed of fixed-wing aircraft with the flexibility and VTOL abilities of rotorcraft. Typical control and estimation schemes make assumptions about the maximum attitude an aircraft will experience that are not valid for tailsitters. This paper discusses the limitations of a typical EKF magnetometer measurement update that uses Euler angles. It is shown how to use a second set of Euler angles to avoid gimbal lock. A method is given that bypasses the use of Euler angles altogether and directly uses the quaternion to determine heading error and update the attitude estimate. This method …

Automatic Evaluation Of Multidisciplinary Derivatives Using A Graph-Based Problem Formulation In Openmdao, Justin Gray, Tristan Hearn, Kenneth Moore, John Hwang, Joaquim Martins, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
The optimization of multidisciplinary systems with respect to large numbers of design variables is best pursued using a gradient-based optimization together with a method that efficiently evaluates coupled derivatives, such as the coupled adjoint method. However, implementing such a method in a problem with more than a few disciplines is time consuming and error prone. To address this issue, we develop an automated procedure for assembling and solving the coupled derivative equations that takes into account the disciplinary couplings using the interdisciplinary dependency graph of the problem. The coupled derivatives can be computed completely analytically, if analytic derivatives are available …

Understanding wake dynamics is an ongoing research topic in wind energy, since wakes have considerable effects on the power production when wind turbines are placed in a wind farm. Wind tunnel experiments have been conducted to study the wake to wake interaction in a model wind farm in tandem with measurements of the extracted power. The aim is to investigate how alternating mast height influences the interaction of the wakes and the power production. Via the use of stereo-particle image velocimetry, the flow field was obtained in the first and last rows of the wind turbine array as a basis …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Recent data highlight that competitive skiers face a high risk of injuries especially during off-balance jump landing maneuvers in downhill skiing. The purpose of the present study was to develop a musculo-skeletal modeling and simulation approach to investigate the cause-and-effect relationship between a perturbed landing position, i.e., joint angles and trunk orientation, and the peak force in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during jump landing. A two-dimensional musculo-skeletal model was developed and a baseline simulation was obtained reproducing measurement data of a reference landing movement. Based on the baseline simulation, a series of perturbed landing simulations (n=1000) was generated. Multiple …
