Study Of A Generalized Empirical Model For Predicting Pressure Drop For Internal Flows, Tejas Anup Pant Jul 2014

Study Of A Generalized Empirical Model For Predicting Pressure Drop For Internal Flows, Tejas Anup Pant

Open Access Theses

A generalized empirical model for estimating the pressure drop across a channel for a given massflow rate is studied through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. It is observed that for developing laminar and turbulent flow through channels and pipes of arbitrary cross-section, the variation in the pressure drop between any two points in the flow direction with massflow rate can be well approximated by a second degree expression in massflow rate which is referred to as the empirical model in this study. In the first part of this study, a correlation between the pressure gradient and the massflow rate is …

Investigation Of The Influence Of Gravitational Body Force Effects On Critical Heat Flux For Flow Boiling With Subcooled And Two-Phase Inlet, Christopher Alan Konishi

Open Access Dissertations

Space agencies worldwide are being confronted with the challenges of more distant manned space missions, which will demand greater energy efficiency and reduced weight and volume. One method being considered to reduce the weight and volume is to replace present single-phase Thermal Control Systems (TCSs) with ones that rely on flow boiling and condensation. This transition will require a thorough understanding of the influence of reduced gravity on flow boiling and condensation, and the development of predictive tools for both. The primary purpose of the present study is to investigate the impact gravitational body force effects have on flow boiling …

A Small-Scale Experiment Using Microwave Interferometry To Investigate Detonation And Shock-To-Detonation Transition In Pressed Tatb, Peter John Renslow Jul 2014

A Small-Scale Experiment Using Microwave Interferometry To Investigate Detonation And Shock-To-Detonation Transition In Pressed Tatb, Peter John Renslow

Open Access Theses

A small-scale characterization test utilizing microwave interferometry was developed to dynamically measure detonation and run to detonation distance in explosives. The technique was demonstrated by conducting two experimental series on the well-characterized explosive triaminotrinitrobenzene (TATB). In the first experiment series, the detonation velocity was observed at varying porosity. The velocity during TATB detonation matched well with predictions made using CHEETAH and an empirical relation from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The microwave interferometer also captured unsteady propagation of the reaction when a low density charge was near the failure diameter. In the second experiment series, Pop-plots were produced using …

Light Off Temperature Based Approach To Determine Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Effectiveness Level And The Corresponding Outlet No And No2 Characteristics, Prateek Tayal Jul 2014

Light Off Temperature Based Approach To Determine Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Effectiveness Level And The Corresponding Outlet No And No2 Characteristics, Prateek Tayal

Open Access Theses

According to the latest EPA emission regulations, the NOx (Nitrogen oxide compounds) emissions from heavy duty compression ignition engines need to see a dramatic reduction. The current technology used for this purpose is the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which achieves NOx reduction of around 90% [9]. This involves urea injection which is influenced by the NO: NO2 ratio at the inlet to the SCR. Thus, the role of the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) where most of the oxidation of the NOx compounds takes place, comes to fore. The focus is also on the effectiveness of …

Real-Time Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Shoulder Girdle And Arm Dynamics, Edward K. Chadwick, Dimitra Blana, Robert F. Kirsch, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Electrical stimulation is a promising technology for the restoration of arm function in paralyzed individuals. Control of the paralyzed arm under electrical stimulation, however, is a challenging problem that requires advanced controllers and command interfaces for the user. A real-time model describing the complex dynamics of the arm would allow user-in-the-loop type experiments where the command interface and controller could be assessed. Real-time models of the arm previously described have not included the ability tomodel the independently controlled scapula and clavicle, limiting their utility for clinical applications of this nature. The goal of this study therefore was to evaluate the …

Analysis And Compression Of Large Cfd Data Sets Using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Trevor Jon Blanc

Theses and Dissertations

Efficient analysis and storage of data is an integral but often challenging task when working with computation fluid dynamics mainly due to the amount of data it can output. Methods centered around the proper orthogonal decomposition were used to analyze, compress, and model various simulation cases. Two different high-fidelity, time-accurate turbomachinery simulations were investigated to show various applications of the analysis techniques. The first turbomachinery example was used to illustrate the extraction of turbulent coherent structures such as traversing shocks, vortex shedding, and wake variation from deswirler and rotor blade passages. Using only the most dominant modes, flow fields were …

Multilayer direct laser deposition (DLD) is a fabrication process through which parts are fabricated by creating a molten pool into which metal powder is injected as particles. During fabrication, complex thermal activity occurs in different regions of the build; for example, newly deposited layers will reheat previously deposited layers. The objective of this study was to provide insight into the thermal activity that occurs during the DLD process. This work focused on the effect of the laser parameters of newly deposited layers on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the previously deposited layers in order to characterize these effects to …

Meshless Mechanics And Point-Based Visualization Methods For Surgical Simulations, Rifat Aras Jul 2014

Meshless Mechanics And Point-Based Visualization Methods For Surgical Simulations, Rifat Aras

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computer-based modeling and simulation practices have become an integral part of the medical education field. For surgical simulation applications, realistic constitutive modeling of soft tissue is considered to be one of the most challenging aspects of the problem, because biomechanical soft-tissue models need to reflect the correct elastic response, have to be efficient in order to run at interactive simulation rates, and be able to support operations such as cuts and sutures.

Mesh-based solutions, where the connections between the individual degrees of freedom (DoF) are defined explicitly, have been the traditional choice to approach these problems. However, when the problem …

A Position Analysis Of Coupled Spherical Mechanisms In Action Origami, Landen A. Bowen, L. A. Baxter, Spencer P. Magleby, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Origami has been previously utilized in design to create deployable systems. Action origami, origami designed to move, has the ability to deploy to a larger state and have motion in the deployed state. The majority of action origami achieves motion through coupled systems of spherical mechanisms. An origami vertex, the point at which folds converge, is shown to be equivalent to a spherical change-point mechanism. A position analysis of an origami vertex is presented, resulting in a relationship between input and output angles as well as the path of the coupler link. A method for analyzing coupled systems of repeated …

Numerical Evaluation Of Paris-Regime Crack Growth Rate Based On Plastically Dissipated Energy, Parag G. Nittur, Anette M. Karlsson, Leif A. Carlsson Jul 2014

Numerical Evaluation Of Paris-Regime Crack Growth Rate Based On Plastically Dissipated Energy, Parag G. Nittur, Anette M. Karlsson, Leif A. Carlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The crack growth rate during cyclic loading is investigated via numerical simulations. The crack advancement is governed by a propagation criterion that relates the increment in plastically dissipated energy ahead of the crack tip to a critical value. Once this critical value is satisfied, crack propagation is modeled via a node release scheme. Thus, the crack growth rate is an output from the numerical simulation. The crack growth rate predicted by the proposed scheme is compared with published experimental crack growth data in the Paris-regime for selected metals. A good match is found between the experimentally observed crack growth rates …

Determination Of A Predictive Stiffness Model For A 1 Dof Human Inspired Robotic Joint, Michael Boyarsky

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In order to facilitate more natural and intuitive interaction for human users, robots need to move in a more human-like manner as compared to current robots. This change would enable humans to better anticipate robot movements (which would allow humans to better avoid collisions if necessary) and also improve safety in the context of a collision between a robot and a human. The goal of this thesis was to analyze experimental data of human motion to gain an understanding of how human motion and robot motion differ. From this understanding, a neuro-motor model (NMM) of a human elbow (previously established …

Determining Annoyance Thresholds Of Tones In Noise, Jennifer M. Francis, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Building services equipment often produces noise signatures with significant tones in them that can lead to complaints in the built environment. Previous studies have investigated prominence levels of assorted tonal frequencies, but it is still unclear what prominence of the tones across varying tonal frequencies can lead to human annoyance. This project seeks to apply two different methods towards defining annoyance thresholds of tones in noise at two tonal frequencies: 125 Hz and 500 Hz. In the first, subjects are asked to perform a task, while exposed to ten minutes of a broadband noise spectrum with a specific level of …

An Experimental Fatigue And Finite Element Study Of A Welded Joint Of A Snowplow Blade, George Ernest Selburg Jul 2014

An Experimental Fatigue And Finite Element Study Of A Welded Joint Of A Snowplow Blade, George Ernest Selburg

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This study describes a method to evaluate the fatigue life of a welded joint of a snowplow. Fatigue specimens were then fabricated, which simulated the joint and its loading characteristics. The joint in the specimens were characterized by measuring the geometry of the weld and the hardness of the parent material, weld material, and heat affected zone. It was determined that the fatigue crack that developed in the joint was exposed to mode I fracture forces in the normal plane of the crack. The specimens were then tested in a hydraulic closed looped system to determine the mechanism of fatigue …

Design Of A Passive Ankle Prosthesis With Powered Push-Off Using A Cam Timing Mechanism, Jacob J. Rice Jul 2014

Design Of A Passive Ankle Prosthesis With Powered Push-Off Using A Cam Timing Mechanism, Jacob J. Rice

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis presents the design and simulation results of the CamWalk, a novel passive prosthetic ankle that has mechanical behavior similar to that for a natural ankle. The CamWalk uses a compression spring network that allows coupling between two degrees of freedom; one for translation along the leg and another for rotation about the ankle joint. When walking, potential energy from the person's weight is stored in the spring network in deflection along the leg. The energy is released by the network as rotation of the foot. The amount of translational work that is converted to rotational work about the …

Modeling, Analysis, And Verification Of A Weld-Breaking Mechanism For Automatic Circuit Recloser Applications, Brian Korves Jul 2014

Modeling, Analysis, And Verification Of A Weld-Breaking Mechanism For Automatic Circuit Recloser Applications, Brian Korves

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The automatic circuit recloser (ACR) is responsible for protecting electrical distribution grids in the event that high voltage power lines come in contact with ground. In order to prevent damage, ACRs break the electrical continuity of the circuit through the use of a vacuum interrupter and a weld breaking mechanism. Vacuum interrupters consist of two metallic contacts in an air-tight ceramic housing. Due to the electrical interactions that take place during the interruption process, unintended welds are formed between the contacts. These welds have the ability to impede or completely stop the interruption process, thus rendering the ACR inoperable. In …

Design And Verification Of A Compact Variable Stiffness Actuator With A Very Large Range Of Stiffness, Daniel Garces Jul 2014

Design And Verification Of A Compact Variable Stiffness Actuator With A Very Large Range Of Stiffness, Daniel Garces

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Current conventional robots require high stiffness joints to provide absolute positioning accuracy in free space which also causes problems when operating in constrained space. To circumvent these problems, Variable Stiffness Actuators (VSAs) can be used to vary their stiffness to suit the task being performed. A new VSA was designed to provide a very large range of stiffness in a compact size. The Arched Flexure VSA uses a cantilevered beam acting as the flexure with a variable point of contact. It allows the joint to have continuous variable stiffness, have zero stiffness for a small range of motion, and rapid …

Implementation Of Analytical Fatigue Models Into Opensim To Predict The Effects Of Fatigue On Anterior Cruciate Ligament Loading, Michael A. Samann Jul 2014

Implementation Of Analytical Fatigue Models Into Opensim To Predict The Effects Of Fatigue On Anterior Cruciate Ligament Loading, Michael A. Samann

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) provides stability to the knee joint while performing activities such as a side step cut. Neuromuscular fatigue, a reduction in muscle force producing capabilities, alters lower extremity mechanics while performing a side step cut and may increase the risk of ACL injury, particularly in females. Musculoskeletal modeling allows for the measurement of muscle forces, which are difficult to measure in-vivo. Therefore, musculoskeletal modeling, may improve our understanding of the effects of neuromuscular fatigue on muscle force production and loading of the ACL. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a musculoskeletal model which …

Infrastructure health monitoring is an important issue in the transportation industry. For the case of cement-based structures in particular, detection of corrosion on reinforcing steel bars (rebar) is an ongoing problem for aging infrastructure. There have been a number of techniques that have shown promise in this area including microwave nondestructive testing (NDT) and thermography. Thermography is quite advantageous as it is an established method, and can be utilized for large inspection areas with intuitive results. Typical heat sources include induction heating and flash lamps, but these are not without drawbacks. Microwave nondestructive testing has also been successful at detecting …

A Novel Microgrid Demand-Side Management System For Manufacturing Facilities, Terance Jerome Harper Jul 2014

A Novel Microgrid Demand-Side Management System For Manufacturing Facilities, Terance Jerome Harper

Open Access Theses

Thirty-one percent of annual energy consumption in the United States occurs within the industrial sector, where manufacturing processes account for the largest amount of energy consumption and carbon emissions. For this reason, energy efficiency in manufacturing facilities is increasingly important for reducing operating costs and improving profits. Using microgrids to generate local sustainable power should reduce energy consumption from the main utility grid along with energy costs and carbon emissions. Also, microgrids have the potential to serve as reliable energy generators in international locations where the utility grid is often unstable.

For this research, a manufacturing process that had approximately …

Experimental Study Of Unsteady Heat Release In An Unstable Single Element Lean Direct Injection (Ldi) Gas Turbine Combustor, Varun S. Lakshmanan Jul 2014

Experimental Study Of Unsteady Heat Release In An Unstable Single Element Lean Direct Injection (Ldi) Gas Turbine Combustor, Varun S. Lakshmanan

Open Access Theses

In an effort to curb emissions from gas turbine engines, many low emission engine concepts have been developed. Among the most promising of these is the LDI (Lean Direct Injection). These systems operate at relatively low equivalence ratios close to blowout and are prone to instabilities. Combustion instabilities can reduce the life of the combustor by causing large pressure fluctuations and enhanced heat release to the walls of the combustor and reduce the efficiency of the engines. The understanding of combustion instabilities is vital to the implementation of such systems. Combustion instabilities are studied in an self-excited single element gas …

Weld Pool And Keyhole Dynamic Analysis Based On Visual System And Neural Network During Laser Keyhole Welding, Masiyang Luo Jul 2014

Weld Pool And Keyhole Dynamic Analysis Based On Visual System And Neural Network During Laser Keyhole Welding, Masiyang Luo

Open Access Theses

In keyhole fiber laser welding processes, the weld pool behavior and keyhole dynamics are essential to determining welding quality. To observe and control the welding process, the accurate extraction of the weld pool boundary as well as the width is required. In addition, because of the cause-and-effect relationship between the welding defects and stability of the keyhole, which is primarily determined by keyhole geometry during the welding process, the stability of keyhole needs to be considered as well.^ The first part of this thesis presents a weld pool edge detection technique based on an off axial green illumination laser and …

Assessment Of Noise Metrics For Application To Rotorcraft, Andrew L. Mcmullen Jul 2014

Assessment Of Noise Metrics For Application To Rotorcraft, Andrew L. Mcmullen

Open Access Theses

It is anticipated that the use of rotorcraft passenger vehicles for shorter journeys will increase because their use can reduce the time between boarding and take-off. The characteristics of rotorcraft noise are very different to that of fixed wing aircraft. There can be strong tonal components, fluctuations that can also make the noise sound impulsive, and future rotorcraft may produce proportionally more low frequency noise content. Most metrics that are used today to predict noise impact on communities around airports (e.g., Ldn) are just functions of A-weighted sound pressure level. To build a better noise annoyance model that …

Impinging Jet Spray Formation Using Non-Newtonian Liquids, Neil S. Rodrigues Jul 2014

Impinging Jet Spray Formation Using Non-Newtonian Liquids, Neil S. Rodrigues

Open Access Theses

Over the past two decades there has been a heightened interest in implementing gelled propellants for rocket propulsion, especially for hypergolic bi-propellants such as monomethylhydrazine (MMH) and nitrogen tetroxide oxidizer (NTO). Due to the very high level of toxicity of hypergolic liquid rocket propellants, increasing safety is an important area of need for continued space exploration and defense operations. Gelled propellants provide an attractive solution to meeting the requirements for safety, while also potentially improving performance. ^ A gelling agent can be added to liquid propellants exhibiting Newtonian behavior to transform the liquid into a non-Newtonian fluid with some solid-like …

Design Of A High Performance Actuation System Enabled By Energy Coupling Actuation, Daniel Richard Skelton Jul 2014

Design Of A High Performance Actuation System Enabled By Energy Coupling Actuation, Daniel Richard Skelton

Open Access Theses

The main goal of the research was to design, manufacture, and test a new linear actuation system. Research was conducted on several types of actuation methods applied to hydraulic valves. A literature review showed that most existing actuator systems have the actuator and control mass coupled together. There is a need for high speed actuation. The proposed idea is to have the actuation mass always moving while accelerating and decelerating the control mass. The decoupling of these two will allow for the actuation and control mechanism to be independent and only move the control mechanism when needed. Initial modeling, as …

Development, Numerical Demonstration And Experimental Verification Of A Method For Model Updating Of Boundary Conditions, Christian Eduardo Silva Salazar Jul 2014

Development, Numerical Demonstration And Experimental Verification Of A Method For Model Updating Of Boundary Conditions, Christian Eduardo Silva Salazar

Open Access Theses

The study of vibrations in beams has been largely addressed by authors and researchers. However, relatively few researchers have considered the case of unknown boundary conditions, as usually it is reasonable to assume the classical cases such as simply supported, clamped or free. Indeed, there are a wide variety of boundary-condition configurations, each one representing a whole different problem with its own modal characteristics. ^ A method for updating experimental beam models to specifically address the issue of unknown boundary conditions is proposed. This methodology takes advantage of vector comparison techniques such as the modal assurance criterion and the dot …

The Prediction Of Airborne And Structure-Borne Noise Potential For A Tire, Nicholas Sakamoto Jul 2014

The Prediction Of Airborne And Structure-Borne Noise Potential For A Tire, Nicholas Sakamoto

Open Access Theses

Tire/pavement interaction noise is a major component of both exterior pass-by noise and vehicle interior noise. The current testing methods for ranking tires from loud to quiet require expensive equipment, multiple tires, and/or long experimental set-up and run times. If a laboratory based off-vehicle test could be used to identify the airborne and structure-borne potential of a tire from its dynamic characteristics, a relative ranking of a large group of tires could be performed at relatively modest expense. This would provide a smaller sample set of tires for follow-up testing and thus save expense for automobile OEMs. The focus of …
