Fatigue Behavior And Microstructure Examination Of Aisi D2 Trim Dies, Xinchen Wang
Fatigue Behavior And Microstructure Examination Of Aisi D2 Trim Dies, Xinchen Wang
Wayne State University Theses
AISI D2 steels are widely used as tools for forming, drawing and trimming dies due to its high wear resistance, high compressive strength and low distortion, and its performance as a trim die material for cutting ultra-high strength steels (at 1GPa or above) is investigated in this study.
To simulate the production trimming process under a laboratory accelerated fatigue condition, a trim die simulator and testing technique have been developed. In this test 1" cubic die samples were used that offers total 12 cutting edges of 6 different material grain orientations in shearing, and with adjustable die clearance. A non-contact …

Mechanical And Electro-Chemical Investigation Of Carbon Farbric/Epoxy And Aluminum Foam Sandwich Composite Beams, Narin Sara Fatima
Wayne State University Theses
In this study the mechanical and electrochemical response of a sandwich composite comprising of carbon fiber fabric skin and aluminum foam core was evaluated. The three point flexural test was chosen to investigate the mechanical behavior in terms of finding the deformation and failure behavior. The flexural test exhibited an excellent bond between the skin and the core. The specimens mainly failed in three different modes - indentation, core shear and face yielding and showed three distinct regions: a linear rise in load with displacement region, a rapid load drop region and a plateau region followed by a densification region. …
Model Based Adaptive Control Of Underwater Vehicles For Improved Ocean Science, Christopher J. Mcfarland
Model Based Adaptive Control Of Underwater Vehicles For Improved Ocean Science, Christopher J. Mcfarland
Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports
Recent advances in unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) capabilities have enabled oceanographic scientists to consider addressing research topics previously thought impractical or impossible. One such topic is the validation of high resolution computer models; long term deployments of coordinated UUV survey teams have been proposed to collect the density of measurements required. Another topic is the study of biological diversity in volatile areas; UUV intervention/sampling deployments have been proposed because of the inherent risks. In general, providing a high density of high accuracy measurements requires passing many targets as quickly and closely as possible. Similarly, efficacy for intervention/sampling deployments requires agile …

The Effect Of Isostatic Pressing On The Dielectric Properties Of Screen Printed Ba0.5Sr0.5Tio3 Thick Films, Siwei Wang, Lingling Zhang, Jiwei Zhai, Fanglin Chen
Faculty Publications
Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thick films with B2O3–Li2O glass sintering aid were prepared by the screen printing method on Al2O3 substrates. A 200 MPa isostatic pressure was applied to the films before sintering. After being sintered at 950∘C, lower porosity and denser microstructure was obtained compared with the films without isostatic pressing. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss were 238 and 0.0028, respectively. A tunability of 61.7% was obtained for the isostatic pressed films, a 27.8% enhancement compared to unpressurized films. These results suggest that isostatic pressing …
Monitoring Damage Initiation And Growth In Composite Structures By Acoustic Emission Method, Kassahun Mekonnen Asamene
Monitoring Damage Initiation And Growth In Composite Structures By Acoustic Emission Method, Kassahun Mekonnen Asamene
Dissertations
In this dissertation, acoustic emission technique is examined as candidate for monitoring the integrity of polymer matrix structural members. Acoustic emission technique has so far been largely limited to laboratory tests and field applications have been mostly limited to qualification tests of aerospace structures. The lack of quantitative indications of damage in composite structural members associated with the complex nature of damage in these materials has been a limiting factor. Generally, a number of failure modes operate simultaneously at a site of damage, and each of these failure modes generates a different type of acoustic emission signal. In addition, issues …

Magnesium has emerged as a revolutionary biodegradable metal for use as an orthopedic material, it has several advantages over the permanent metallic materials currently in use, including eliminating the effects of stress shielding, improving biocompatibility and degradation properties, thus removing the requirement of a second surgery for implant removal. Due to the rapid degradation of magnesium, it is necessary to control the corrosion rates of the materials to match the rates of bone healing. This dissertation reports on the effect of doping on the properties of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP). It also reports on its application as a thin film coating …
Multiphase Hydrodynamics In Steady And Pulse Jet Mixing Systems, Ibraheem R. Muhammad
Multiphase Hydrodynamics In Steady And Pulse Jet Mixing Systems, Ibraheem R. Muhammad
Dissertations
The goal of the present study is to evaluate the mixing performance of jet mixers in both liquid and solid-liquid mixing processes. Jet mixers have been studied for decades for its uses in liquid blending and solid-liquid mixing applications. In solid suspension processes, jet mixers can be just as useful if not more useful than conventional impeller mixers. However, there is a lack of phenomenological models that exist. The erosion and subsequent suspension of solids beds, as well as the suspension of a low concentration of solid particles must be better understood. The specific objectives were to develop analytical, experimental …

Developing A System For Blind Acoustic Source Localization And Separation, Raghavendra Kulkarni
Wayne State University Theses
This dissertation presents innovate methodologies for locating, extracting, and separating multiple incoherent sound sources in three-dimensional (3D) space; and applications of the time reversal (TR) algorithm to pinpoint the hyper active neural activities inside the brain auditory structure that are correlated to the tinnitus pathology. Specifically, an acoustic modeling based method is developed for locating arbitrary and incoherent sound sources in 3D space in real time by using a minimal number of microphones, and the Point Source Separation (PSS) method is developed for extracting target signals from directly measured mixed signals. Combining these two approaches leads to a novel technology …
Ion Current Signal Detection During Cold Starting And Idling Operation In A Diesel Engine, Sanket Anil Gujarathi
Ion Current Signal Detection During Cold Starting And Idling Operation In A Diesel Engine, Sanket Anil Gujarathi
Wayne State University Theses
Cold starting of diesel engines is characterized by inherent problems such as long cranking periods and combustion instability leading to an increase in fuel consumption and the emission of high concentrations of hydrocarbons which appear as white smoke. Accordingly, a signal indicative of combustion during cold starting and idling operation is important for combustion and emission control. The ion current signal has been considered for the feedback control of both gasoline and diesel engines. However, the ion current signal produced from the combustion of the heterogeneous charge in diesel engines is weaker compared to that produced from the combustion of …

Robustness Of A Derivative-Free Adaptive Control Law In The Presence Of Unmodeled Dynamics, Tansel Yucelen, Anthony J. Calise
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Although adaptive control theory offers mathematical tools to achieve required system performance without excessive dependence on modeling, its application to safety-critical systems can be limited by the presence of unmodeled dynamics. This paper examines the robustness to unmodeled dynamics of a recently developed derivative-free adaptive control law. In contrast to derivative-based adaptive laws it is shown, using a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, that robustness to unmodeled dynamics is improved by increasing the adaptation gain. This is accomplished by including a bias term in the set of basic functions employed by the adaptive control law. It is shown that derivative-based adaptive laws do …
Hybrid Protocols For Maintaining Connectivity Of Multiagent Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson
Hybrid Protocols For Maintaining Connectivity Of Multiagent Systems, Gerardo De La Torre, Tansel Yucelen, Eric N. Johnson
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper focuses on a new connectivity control architecture for networked multiagent systems based on hybrid protocols. Specifically, for a group of agents subject to Δ-disk proximity graphs, we consider the consensus problem while preserving connectedness with a priori given bounds on the control inputs. The bounds on the control inputs are shown not to depend on potential functions or system states. Instead, the bounds are user selected continuous functions. By using the proposed framework, we show that the maximum distance among neighboring agents decreases strictly, and hence the connectivity problem is solved while satisfying the consensus objective. © 2013 …
Separate-Channel Integrated Guidance And Autopilot For Automatic Path-Following, Takeshi Yamasaki, S. N. Balakrishnan, Hiroyuki Takano
Separate-Channel Integrated Guidance And Autopilot For Automatic Path-Following, Takeshi Yamasaki, S. N. Balakrishnan, Hiroyuki Takano
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An integrated guidance and autopilot scheme for a path-following uninhabited aerial vehicle is presented in this study. A fixed-wing aircraft usually performs a bank-to-turn maneuver to change its flight direction. The novel approach presented here, however, assumes that each of the three channels of the integrated guidance and autopilot can be independently designed. This concept makes the design process simple. A virtual target moving on the prespecified path for the uninhabited aerial vehicle is introduced to facilitate the algorithm development. A first-/ second order sliding structure with a second order sliding mode and a high-order sliding mode differentiator for the …

Development Of Advanced Polymer Nanocomposite Capacitors, Md Rajib
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With the development of modern technology, the demand of high energy density dielectric capacitor devices is increasing for its significant role in stationary power systems, mobile devices, and pulse power applications. Among the different energy storage devices, polymer film based dielectric capacitor is still one of the most widely used energy storage devices mainly due to its high energy density, significant higher charge/discharge rate and low cost. To further enhance the energy density, high dielectric ceramic inclusions have been embedded in the polymer matrix; however, the temperature influence on the energy density has not been investigated. Therefore, in this research …
Chemoelastoplastic Analysis Of A Copper-Graded Silicon Nanorod For Lithium-Ion Battery Anode Application, Chao Ji
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Lithium-ion batteries are currently widely used in electronics, electrical vehicles and other devices/machines. Along with the mounting demand for much improved performance in these developing technological fields, silicon was recognized to possess much higher energy capacity when used as an anode than graphite that is currently used. However, there occurs colossal volume expansion of silicon anode during the lithiation process. The material consequently suffers enormous stresses, especially, at the interface with a current collector, which deteriorate the device quickly during cycling. To prevent the active material (Si) from falling off from a current collector, nanoengineering strategies have been suggested, including …

The ever increasing information technology heat load and data center cooling energy are the main reasons to investigate the performance of microencapsulated phase change slurry over other heat transfer fluids. In recent years, more effort is being made on the development of a new technique to use the phase change materials as pump-able heat transfer fluid and as heat storage system.Microencapsulated phase change slurry is dispersion where the phase change material, microencapsulated by a polymeric capsule, is dispersed in water. Compared to water, these new fluids have a higher heat capacity during phase change and a possible enhancement, as a …
Thermal Management Method For Foil Bearings In Turbine Hot Section, Tejas Devidas Patil
Thermal Management Method For Foil Bearings In Turbine Hot Section, Tejas Devidas Patil
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Recently, Air Foil Bearings (AFB) are gaining higher industrial acceptance in micro-turbo machinery. AFB show high speed operating capability and environmental friendly operation in comparison to rolling element bearings. Utilization of ambient air as a lubricant eliminates maintenance of a pressurized oil lubricating system. AFBs are therefore a feasible alternative to oil lubricated bearings in small machines. High speed operation results in thermal management issues which can be solved through a suitable cooling mechanism. Axial cooling by passing air through bearing support structure (called bump foils) is the most commonly used. In this method, cooling is achieved in the heat …
