Sheathless Size-Based Acoustic Particle Separation, Rasim Guldiken, Myeong Chan Jo, Nathan D. Gallant, Utkan Demirci, Jiang Zhe
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
Particle separation is of great interest in many biological and biomedical applications. Flow-based methods have been used to sort particles and cells. However, the main challenge with flow based particle separation systems is the need for a sheath flow for successful operation. Existence of the sheath liquid dilutes the analyte, necessitates precise flow control between sample and sheath flow, requires a complicated design to create sheath flow and separation efficiency depends on the sheath liquid composition. In this paper, we present a microfluidic platform for sheathless particle separation using standing surface acoustic waves. In this platform, particles are first lined …
Gpu-Accelerated Large-Eddy Simulation Of Turbulent Channel Flows, Rey Deleon, Inanc Senocak
Gpu-Accelerated Large-Eddy Simulation Of Turbulent Channel Flows, Rey Deleon, Inanc Senocak
Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
High performance computing clusters that are augmented with cost and power efficient graphics processing unit (GPU) provide new opportunities to broaden the use of large-eddy simulation technique to study high Reynolds number turbulent flows in fluids engineering applications. In this paper, we extend our earlier work on multi-GPU acceleration of an incompressible Navier-Stokes solver to include a large-eddy simulation (LES) capability. In particular, we implement the Lagrangian dynamic subgrid scale model and compare our results against existing direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of a turbulent channel flow at Reτ = 180. Overall, our LES results match fairly well with …
Biomechanical Implications Of Lumbar Spinal Ligament Transectiona Finite Element Study, Gregory Allen Von Forell
Biomechanical Implications Of Lumbar Spinal Ligament Transectiona Finite Element Study, Gregory Allen Von Forell
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work was to determine the possible effects of isolated spinal ligament transection on the biomechanics of the lumbar spine. A finite element model of a lumbar spine was developed and validated against experimental data. The model was tested in the primary modes of spinal motion in the intact condition, followed by comparative analysis of isolated removal of each spinal ligament. Results showed that stress increased in the remaining ligaments once a ligament was removed, potentially leading to ligament damage. Results also showed changes in bone remodeling "stimulus" which could lead to changes in bone density. Isolated …
Evolutionary Optimization Of Electronic Circuitry Cooling Using Nanofluid, Manu Mital
Evolutionary Optimization Of Electronic Circuitry Cooling Using Nanofluid, Manu Mital
Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
Liquid cooling electronics using microchannels integrated in the chips is an attractive alternative to bulky aluminum heat sinks. Cooling can be further enhanced using nanofluids. The goals of this study are to evaluate heat transfer in a nanofluid heat sink with developing laminar flow forced convection, taking into account the pumping power penalty. The proposed model uses semi-empirical correlations to calculate effective nanofluid thermophysical properties, which are then incorporated into heat transfer and friction factor correlations in literature for single-phase flows. The model predicts the thermal resistance and pumping power as a function of four design variables that include the …
Optimizing Fiber Cross-Sectional Shape For Improving Stability Of Air–Water Interface Over Superhydrophobic Fibrous Coatings, B. Emami, Hooman Vahedi Tafreshi
Optimizing Fiber Cross-Sectional Shape For Improving Stability Of Air–Water Interface Over Superhydrophobic Fibrous Coatings, B. Emami, Hooman Vahedi Tafreshi
Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
In this letter, a mathematical force-balance formulation is developed that can be used to predict the critical pressure, the hydrostaticpressure above which the surface starts to depart from the non-wetting state, for superhydrophobicsurfaces comprised of highly aligned fibers (e.g., biased AC-electrospun coatings) with arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. We have also developed a methodology for optimizing the fiber cross-sections to maximize the critical pressure of the surface, using the Euler–Lagrange equation. A case study is presented to better demonstrate the application of our method.
Treatment Of Osteoporosis In A Mouse Model Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Using Black Bear Parathyroid Hormone, Sarah K. Gray
Treatment Of Osteoporosis In A Mouse Model Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Using Black Bear Parathyroid Hormone, Sarah K. Gray
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive disease affecting skeletal and cardiac muscle, as well as bone. Long term disuse and glucocorticoid treatments cause progressive osteoporosis in DMD patients, leading to an increase in fracture incidence. Treatments for osteoporosis in these patients have not been widely explored. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), an anabolic treatment for post-menopausal osteoporosis, could benefit DMD patients by improving skeletal properties and reducing fracture risk. Other PTH analogues are not currently FDA approved to treat osteoporosis, but may have improved osteogenic effects compared to the human analogue. Black bear PTH is especially promising as an osteoporosis treatment …
Vortex Shedding Dynamics In Long Aspect-Ratio Aerodynamics Bodies, Liu Chen
Vortex Shedding Dynamics In Long Aspect-Ratio Aerodynamics Bodies, Liu Chen
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The focus of the current dissertation is to study qualitatively the underlying physics of vortex-shedding and wake dynamics in long aspect-ratio aerodynamics in incompressible viscous flow through the use of the KLE method. We carried out a long series of numerical experiments in the cases of flow around the cylinder at low Reynolds numbers. The study of flow at low Reynolds numbers provides an insight in the fluid physics and also plays a critical role when applying to stalled turbine rotors. Many of the conclusions about the qualitative nature of the physical mechanisms characterizing vortex formation, shedding and further interaction …

Analysis Of The Penney-Ante Game Using Difference Equations: Development Of An Optimal And A Mixed-Strategies Protocol, Carl Barratt, Pauline Schwartz
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
Penney-Ante is a well known two-player (Player I and Player II) game based on an information paradox. We present a new approach, using difference-equations, to analyzing the outcome for each player. One strategy yields a winning outcome of 75% for Player II, the player playing second. The approach also permits investigation of non-optimal strategies, and demonstrates how mixing of such strategies can be used to tune the winning edge of either player. We generalize the analysis to accommodate the possibility of a biased coin.

Effect Of Fiber Orientation On Shape And Stability Of Air-Water Interface On Submerged Superhydrophobic Electrospun Thin Coatings, B. Emami, H. Vahedi Tafreshi, M. Gad-El-Hak, G. C. Tepper
Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
To better understand the role of fiber orientation on the stability of superhydrophobicelectrospun coatings under hydrostaticpressures, an integro-differential equation is developed from the balance of forces across the air–water interface between the fibers. This equation is solved numerically for a series of superhydrophobicelectrospun coatings comprised of random and orthogonal fiber orientations to obtain the exact 3D shape of the air–water interface as a function of hydrostaticpressure. More important, this information is used to predict the pressure at which the coatings start to transition from the Cassie state to the Wenzel state, i.e., the so-called critical transition pressure. Our results indicate …

Model-Based Approach To Account For Rhe Variation Of Primary Voc Emissions Over Time In The Identification Of Indoor Voc Sources, Kwanghoon Han, Jensen S. Zhang, Pawel Wargocki, Henrik N. Knudsen, Pramod K. Varshney, Bing Guo
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - All Scholarship
The study objectives were to improve the understanding of the long-term variation of VOC emission chromatograms of building materials and to develop a method to account for this variation in the identification of individual sources of VOC emissions. This is of importance for the application of the source identification method since materials age over time in real indoor environments. The method is based on the mixed air sample measurements containing pollutants from multiple aged materials and the emission signatures of individual new materials determined by PTR-MS. Three emission decay source models were employed and evaluated for their ability to track …

Non-Isothermal Cool Flames In Unstirred Static Reactors: A Compressible Model With Global Kinetics, Michael R. Foster, Howard Pearlman
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
A compressible model is developed with kinetics based on the Wang–Mou five-step global kinetic scheme and used to evaluate the temperature, concentration, and velocity fields characteristic of low temperature combustion in unstirred static reactors. This work relaxes the assumption of small exothermicity that enabled prior studies to employ the Boussinesq approximation, valid for cases where BT << 1, i.e., slow reactions and cool flames. In this study, the range of validity of the model is extended to cases with large temperature excursions, including multi-stage ignition. For the weakly exothermic cases considered, including modes of slow reaction and cool flames, the Boussinesq approximation is completely adequate. However, it overpredicts the density change and underpredicts the ignition delay time for high-temperature ignitions. Qualitative comparison with experimental results acquired at microgravity conditions are also discussed.

Engineers design everything from automobiles and bridges to prosthetic limbs and sporting equipment. Designing is different from simply building in that it requires the adherence to a very systematic, yet iterative, process known as the “engineering design process.” This process is to engineers what the scientific method is to scientists-guiding steps that help ensure that the end result is the best it can be. When a new product is created without following the steps of the engineering design process, there is a higher likelihood that the product designed will lack some important aspect: the end product may not appropriately account …

Predicting Shape And Stability Of Air–Water Interface On Superhydrophobic Surfaces Comprised Of Pores With Arbitrary Shapes And Depths, B. Emami, Dr. Hooman Vahedi Tafreshi, M. Gad-El-Hak, Gary C. Tepper
Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications
An integro-differential equation for the three dimensional shape of air–water interface on superhydrophobicsurfaces comprised of pores with arbitrary shapes and depths is developed and used to predict the static critical pressure under which such surfaces depart from the non-wetting state. Our equation balances the capillary forces with the pressure of the air entrapped in the pores and that of the water over the interface. Stability of shallow and deep circular, elliptical, and polygonal pores is compared with one another and a general conclusion is drawn for designing pore shapes for superhydrophobicsurfaces with maximum stability.

Feature-Based Neuro-Symbolic Networks For Global Diagnostics, Tracy Lynn Schantz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Engineered system diagnostics have been researched over the years with many successful results. From transportation systems to office technologies, many have been equipped with self-diagnostic capabilities and are called Smart Machines. In spite of these advances, current diagnostic systems are driven by direct sensory information without much concern for patterns of the system behavior or features associated with them. For large-scale systems with complex dynamics, global as well as local diagnostics become of great importance, where sensory information is used as input for the local diagnostics, and patterns of behavior or features are utilized for global diagnostics.
The main objective …
Micro Channel Cooler Performance Improvement By Insonation, Peter Webb Higgins
Micro Channel Cooler Performance Improvement By Insonation, Peter Webb Higgins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The motivation for this work is the need to remove waste heat from laser diodes and high speed transistors in processes which are exponentially increasing past 1 kW/cm2 as anticipated by Moore's Law. The hypothesis guiding the work is that ultrasonic insonation of micro coolers employed to dissipate these heat loads can improve heat removal. It is thought that the mechanism promoting the benefit is enhancement of the ability of the coolant to remove latent heat in two-phase operation by managing entrained bubble size near the cooler's exit so as to forestall flow reduction or blockage caused by large bubbles, …

Design And Analysis Of A Low-Profile Two-Axis Solar Tracker With Hybridized Control, Laughlin Barker, Criselle Olaes, Joseph Valdez, Darcy Marumoto
Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses
The adoption of solar power technologies throughout the world is increasing rapidly. Solar trackers are a necessary component in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) applications and have also shown up to 46% per annum energy increase in photovoltaic (PV) panels when compared with fixed mounted panels. To resist wind forces, trackers typically incorporate heavy structural components and reinforced concrete foundations. Thus, the manufacture and installation of trackers is costly due to their size, weight, and careful consideration of geological conditions. This work presents a new solar tracker design for use with concentrating solar power and photovoltaic panels. The tracker is comprised …

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a debilitating disease that is becoming more prevalent in today’s society. OA affects approximately 28 million adults in the United States alone and when present in the knee joint, usually leads to a total knee replacement. Numerous studies have been conducted to determine possible methods to halt the initiation of OA, but the structural integrity of the menisci has been shown have a direct effect on the progression of OA. Menisci are two C-shaped structures that are attached to the tibial plateau and aid in facilitating proper load transmission within the knee. The meniscal cross-section is wedge-like …

Controlling Nanoparticles Formation In Molten Metallic Bilayers By Pulsed-Laser Interference Heating, Mikhail Khenner, Sagar Yadavali, Ramki Kalyanaraman
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The impacts of the two-beam interference heating on the number of core-shell and embedded nanoparticles and on nanostructure coarsening are studied numerically based on the non-linear dynamical model for dewetting of the pulsed-laser irradiated, thin (< 20 nm) metallic bilayers. The model incorporates thermocapillary forces and disjoining pressures, and assumes dewetting from the optically transparent substrate atop of the reflective support layer, which results in the complicated dependence of light reflectivity and absorption on the thicknesses of the layers. Stabilizing thermocapillary effect is due to the local thickness-dependent, steady- state temperature profile in the liquid, which is derived based on the mean substrate temperature estimated from the elaborate thermal model of transient heating and melting/freezing. Linear stability analysis of the model equations set for Ag/Co bilayer predicts the dewetting length scales in the qualitative agreement with experiment.

Kinetic Models Of The Prebiotic Replication Of Dsrna Under Thermal Cycling Conditions, Pauline Schwartz, Dante M. Lepore, Carl Barratt
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
We present computational models for the replication of double stranded RNA (dsRNA) or related macromolecules under thermal cycling conditions that would reflect prebiotic (i.e. non-enzymatic) environments. Two models of the replication of dsRNA are represented as multi-step chemical systems. The objective of this investigation was to better understand the kinetic features of such chemical systems. It is shown that thermal cycling in a chemical system is advantageous (relative to a fixed temperature) if there are two competing reactions, one favored at high temperature and one favored at low temperature. For the prebiotic replication of dsRNA, a high temperature favors formation …

The hands-on experience for engineering students is often lacking with class sizes increasing and classroom resources under constant pressure. Even with smaller class sizes and studio classrooms there is only so much equipment and technical support to run experiments and allow for student interaction. Network-based data collection and control may alleviate some of these issues and allow for more hands-on experiences, although remote, in the classroom. This paper discusses the interesting problems and not so obvious pitfalls of setting up some simple network-based data acquisition systems for a multidisciplinary freshman level engineering course. The course as currently taught includes some …

Cfd Study On Aerodynamic Effects Of A Rear Wing/Spoiler On A Passenger Vehicle, Mustafa Cakir
Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses
Aerodynamic characteristics of a racing car are of significant interest in reducing car-racing accidents due to wind loading and in reducing the fuel consumption. At the present, modified car racing becomes more popular around the world. Sports cars are most commonly seen with spoilers, such as Ford Mustang, Subaru Impreza, and Chevrolet Corvette. Even though these vehicles typically have a more rigid chassis and a stiffer suspension to aid in high-speed maneuverability, a spoiler can still be beneficial. One of the design goals of a spoiler is to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. Many vehicles have a fairly steep …
