Development Of Virtual Engineering Simulation For Lean Education, Akalpit Kiran Gadre Jan 2011

Development Of Virtual Engineering Simulation For Lean Education, Akalpit Kiran Gadre

Masters Theses

"Global competition and customer demands are pressing modern industry operations to become leaner. The race among the global corporations to "go lean" demands engineers with an in-depth understanding of lean philosophies. An overview of current methods for teaching lean shows that they include small scale hands-on projects, presentations, and guest lectures. There is a need to incorporate a more immersive virtual simulation to further inspire students. Many lean simulation games are available in the market; however, they lack simplicity, ability to store the results, and modeling power.

The goal of this research is to develop a virtual simulation platform, enabling …

Risk Assessment For Conceptual Design Of Hydrokinetic Turbines, Praveen Kailkere Srinivas Jan 2011

Risk Assessment For Conceptual Design Of Hydrokinetic Turbines, Praveen Kailkere Srinivas

Masters Theses

"Hydrokinetic energy is a relatively new concept in the field of renewable energy. The rotor of the turbine, immersed in water, uses the velocity from the flowing water to generate power. Thus the hydrokinetic turbines are also known as zero head turbines. These turbines can be installed in rivers, oceans and sea beds. The design of these systems depends on the site conditions, installation and maintenance costs. Since this technology has not been assessed for its potential power producing capabilities, not much research has been done in order to harness this form of renewable energy and to study the impact …

A Comparison Of Bootstrap, Binomial Inference, And Monte Carlo Methods For Demand Distribution Modeling, Swithin Samuel Razu Jan 2011

A Comparison Of Bootstrap, Binomial Inference, And Monte Carlo Methods For Demand Distribution Modeling, Swithin Samuel Razu

Masters Theses

"Analysis of customer preferences is one of the most important tasks in new product development. How customers come to appreciate and decide to purchase a new product impacts market share and, therefore, the success of the new product. Unfortunately, when designers select a product concept early in the product development process, the "true" customer preferences and therefore, market share of the new product is unknown. Conjoint analysis is a statistical methodology that has been used to forecast the market share of a product concept from customer preference survey data. Although conjoint analysis has been increasingly incorporated in design research as …

Evaluation Of Skin-Core Adhesion Bond And Low-Velocity Impact Behavior Of Honeycomb Sandwich Structures, Ramanjaneya R. Butukuri

Masters Theses

"Composite sandwich structures offer several advantages over conventional structural materials such as lightweight, high bending and torsional stiffness, superior thermal insulation and excellent acoustic damping. Some of the failure mechanisms in a composite sandwich structure are de-bonding of the composite facesheets from the core structure and damage due to low-velocity impact. In the first part of this work, adhesive fillet formation and adhesive mechanical strength are evaluated as a function of several different sandwich construction design variables. The effect of film adhesive thickness is studied. A process for reticulation of the adhesive is applied and studied. Optimized combinations of core …

Vision systems have been used extensively in the industry …

A Neural Network Based Approach For Path Planning On Costmap, Songjie Chen Jan 2011

A Neural Network Based Approach For Path Planning On Costmap, Songjie Chen

Masters Theses

"In this thesis, a path planning method using a three-level hierarchical system model is proposed. In the top level of the hierarchy, the given location points to visit are taken as waypoints. The waypoint navigation process is formulated as a traveling salesman problem (TSP). The Lin-Kernighan algorithm is used to solve the TSP and transfer the solution to the lower level of the hierarchy. In the middle level, the path is represented by a grid-based costmap. A novel modified Grossberg neural network is designed to solve the point-to-point path planning. The bottom level of the hierarchy smoothens the path with …

A Methodology Towards Comprehensive Evaluation Of Shape Memory Alloy Actuators For Prosthetic Finger Design, Kevin O'Toole Jan 2011

A Methodology Towards Comprehensive Evaluation Of Shape Memory Alloy Actuators For Prosthetic Finger Design, Kevin O'Toole

Doctoral

Presently, DC motors are the actuator of choice within intelligent upper limb prostheses. However, the weight and dimensions associated with suitable DC motors are not always compatible with the geometric restrictions of a prosthetic hand; reducing available degrees of freedom and ultimately rendering the prosthesis uncomfortable for the end-user. As a result, the search is on-going to find a more appropriate actuation solution that is lightweight, noiseless, strong and cheap. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators offer the potential to meet these requirements. To date, no viable upper limb prosthesis using SMA actuators has been developed. The primary reasons lie in …

Comparison Of Modal Analysis Results Of Laser Vibrometry And Nearfield Acoustical Holography Measurements Of An Aluminum Plate, Jennifer L. Potter

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Noise and vibration has long been sought to be reduced in major industries: automotive, aerospace and marine to name a few. Products must be tested and pass certain levels of federally regulated standards before entering the market. Vibration measurements are commonly acquired using accelerometers; however limitations of this method create a need for alternative solutions.

Two methods for non-contact vibration measurements are compared: Laser Vibrometry, which directly measures the surface velocity of the aluminum plate, and Nearfield Acoustic Holography (NAH), which measures sound pressure in the nearfield, and using Green’s Functions, reconstructs the surface velocity at the plate. The surface …

Dynamic Modeling Of Active Regeneration In Catalyzed And Non-Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters, Aamod Pethe

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Particulate matter (PM) emissions standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have become increasingly stringent over the years. The EPA regulation for PM in heavy duty diesel engines has been reduced to 0.01 g/bhp-hr for the year 2010. Heavy duty diesel engines make use of an aftertreatment filtration device, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). DPFs are highly efficient in filtering PM (known as soot) and are an integral part of 2010 heavy duty diesel aftertreatment system.

PM is accumulated in the DPF as the exhaust gas flows through it. This PM needs to be removed by oxidation periodically …

Topological Changes In 2d Simplicial Meshes For The Simulation Of Fractures, James R. Thunes Jan 2011

Topological Changes In 2d Simplicial Meshes For The Simulation Of Fractures, James R. Thunes

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A method for the introduction of strong discontinuities into a mesh will be developed. This method, applicable to a number of eXtended Finite Element Methods (XFEM) with intra-element strong discontinuities will be demonstrated with one specific method: the Generalized Cohesive Element (GCE) method. The algorithm utilizes a subgraph mesh representation which may insert the GCE either adaptively during the course of the analysis or a priori. Using this subgraphing algorithm, the insertion time is O(n) to the number of insertions. Numerical examples are presented demonstrating the advantages of the subgraph insertion method.

Effects Of Hibernation On Bone In Yellow-Bellied Marmots, Samantha J. Wojda Jan 2011

Effects Of Hibernation On Bone In Yellow-Bellied Marmots, Samantha J. Wojda

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Disuse osteoporosis is a problem for people with spinal cord injury or stroke, patients confined to bed rest, and astronauts exposed to microgravity. Unlike most mammals however, bears have been shown to prevent bone loss during hibernation, a seasonal period of disuse. Similarly, studies in ground squirrels indicate preservation of whole bone strength during hibernation, though evidence suggests there may be some increased osteocytic osteolysis. Uncovering the mechanism by which these animals prevent bone loss during hibernation could lead to an improved treatment for osteoporosis in humans. Marmots are a good animal model for these studies because they are small …

Micro Combined Heat And Power Laboratory Development, Thomson Varghese

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Micro Combined Heat and Power (Micro-CHP) system produces both electricity and heat required for residential or small business applications. Use of Micro-CHP in a residential application not only creates energy and economic savings but also reduces the carbon foot print of the house or small business. Additionally, micro-CHP can subsidize its cost of operation by selling excess electricity produced back to the grid. Even though Micro-CHP remains attractive on paper, high initial cost and optimization issues in residential scale heat and electrical requirement has kept this technology from becoming a success. To understand and overcome all disadvantages posed my Micro-CHP …

Therefore, it is the goal of this thesis to analyze …

High Speed Continuous Thermal Curing Microfabrication System, Franklin Dibartolomeo Jan 2011

High Speed Continuous Thermal Curing Microfabrication System, Franklin Dibartolomeo

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Rapid creation of devices with microscale features is a vital step in the commercialization of a wide variety of technologies, such as microfluidics, fuel cells and self-healing materials. The current standard for creating many of these microstructured devices utilizes the inexpensive, flexible material poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to replicate microstructured molds. This process is inexpensive and fast for small batches of devices, but lacks scalability and the ability to produce large surface-area materials. The novel fabrication process presented in this paper uses a cylindrical mold with microscale surface patterns to cure liquid PDMS prepolymer into continuous microstructured films. Results show that this …

Evaluation Of Mechanical Proerties And Effective Thickness Of The Interfaces By Finite Element Analysis, Sesha Spandana Pulla Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Mechanical Proerties And Effective Thickness Of The Interfaces By Finite Element Analysis, Sesha Spandana Pulla

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The nanoindentation technique has been used to identify the interfaces between dissimilar materials and subsequently to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties across the interfaces. The interfaces could represent the interface (transition face) between oxidized and unoxidized polymers, the interface between rigid fiber and polymer matrix, or other similar situations. It is proposed to use a nanoindenter equipped with small spherical tip to indent across the interfaces of dissimilar materials. The proposed method has been validated by conducting a large number of virtual experiments through 3-dimensional finite element simulations, by varying the properties of the two dissimilar materials, including various …

Experimental Flow Visualization For Corrugated Airfoils At Low Reynolds Number Including Development Of A Pitch And Plunge Fixture, Jeremy Ryan Sparks Jan 2011

Experimental Flow Visualization For Corrugated Airfoils At Low Reynolds Number Including Development Of A Pitch And Plunge Fixture, Jeremy Ryan Sparks

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Micro Air Vehicles (MAV’s) have small size and extreme maneuverability which makes them ideal for surveillance. Propulsion mechanisms include propellers, rotors, and flapping airfoils. Flapping motions, along with biologically-inspired wing profiles, are of interest due to their use of natural physics. Corrugated airfoil structures appears to have poor aerodynamic performance at higher Reynolds numbers, but serve well at Re<10,000. Understanding flow structures around corrugated profiles and comparing them to a standard airfoil will aid in understanding how these corrugated profiles perform well and have been adopted by some of nature’s most acrobatic flyers. Motivation for this investigation is to compare static flow visualizations of corrugated profiles to a standard National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) airfoil from low to high angles of attack and further observe flow structure development of a pitching and plunging flat plate at a Re<10,000 and a Strouhal number relevant to natural fliers. The static visualization was conducted at Re=1,000 with a NACA 0012 airfoil and two corrugated models. The Pitch and Plunge Fixture (PPF) developed was constructed by simplifying flapping wings as a two degree of freedom motion in plunge (translation) and pitch (rotation). Results obtained from the PPF were compared with a numerical simulation.

An Investigation Of The Reynolds Number Dependence Of The Near-Wall Peak In Canonical Wall Bounded Turbulent Channel Flow, Bahareh Estejab Jan 2011

An Investigation Of The Reynolds Number Dependence Of The Near-Wall Peak In Canonical Wall Bounded Turbulent Channel Flow, Bahareh Estejab

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

An experimental investigation into fully developed high aspect ratio channels was undertaken. A review of the literature reveals that there is a need for accurate measurement of the inner peak value of streamwise turbulence intensity despite the large number of studies already completed. The scattered data on this subject could be attributed either to insufficient channel size (aspect ratio or length) or to hot-wire spatial filtering.

A new, high quality, channel flow facility was designed and constructed, considering the most recent geometric limitation provided in the literature. To obtain accurate results, data were acquired using hot-wire probes with constant viscous-scale …
