Use Of Bio-Ethanol And Bio-Diesel The Key Solution For A More Sustainable Road Transport, Alberto Boretti Jan 2011

Use Of Bio-Ethanol And Bio-Diesel The Key Solution For A More Sustainable Road Transport, Alberto Boretti

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of alternative transportation fuels clearly shows the advantages of reducing the use of nonrenewable fossil fuels vs. renewable biologic novel fuels to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide. Being based on the natural recycle of carbon dioxide through the use of renewable energy sources, use of these renewable fuels does not imply depletion of natural resources and is therefore sustainable in the long term. Renewable fuels and advanced internal combustion engines and powertrains are the technologies that in addition to be the most likely to produce benefits in term of carbon balance and fossil fuel saving, …

Lv-11-C031: Measured Levels Of Hospital Noise Before, During, And After Renovation Of A Hospital Wing, And A Survey Of Resulting Patient Perception, Cassandra H. Wiese, Lily M. Wang

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Acoustic conditions in hospitals can negatively influence a patient’s physical and psychological health. This paperreports on noise levels measured before, during, and after renovation of a hospital wing in an Omaha, Nebraska, facility thatregularly receives unsatisfactory noise scores on patient satisfaction surveys. Sound pressure levels were logged every 10seconds over four-day periods in three different locations: at the nurses' station, in the hallway, and in a nearby patient’sroom. The resulting data have been analyzed in terms of A-weighted equivalent sound levels (LAeq) as well as variousexceedance levels (Ln). Results indicate that sound levels did not change much due to the …

Small Footprint High Flow Rate Microdevice For Rare Target Cell Capture, Taehyun Park Jan 2011

Small Footprint High Flow Rate Microdevice For Rare Target Cell Capture, Taehyun Park

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A novel high flow rate cell capture design was introduced to overcome the limitations of the current technologies or methods for rare target cell capture. Even though the rare target cell capture using BioMEMS technology has great potential for cancer diagnosis, previous rare cell capture research could not overcome the limitations of low flow rate or low recovery rate. Rare cell research requires precise sample preparation for accurate results. A new method of preparation for a single or a precise number of target cell was introduced. Current sample preparation methods which are not suitable for rare cell research, such as …

Analysis Of Partially Electroded Piezoelectric Actuators With Nonuniform Thickness For The Purpose Of Reducing Actuating Shear Stress Concentration By Ansys, Nan Liu, Hongping Hu Jan 2011

Analysis Of Partially Electroded Piezoelectric Actuators With Nonuniform Thickness For The Purpose Of Reducing Actuating Shear Stress Concentration By Ansys, Nan Liu, Hongping Hu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

An elastic plate with thin piezoelectric films bonded on its two major surfaces is a typical smart structure which is used in actuation and sensing. The useful deformation of the smart structure is caused by the shear stress transferring from the actuators to the elastic plate. This shear stress is concentrated at two ends of the interface between the actuator and the plate. This concentration may induce undesirable delamination of the actuator from the plate. It was theoretically proved that actuators with partially covered electrodes have a much less concentrated actuating shear stress than that with fully ones. An actuator …

Simulation Of Electrospun Nanofiber Deposition On Stationary And Moving Substrates, Linhua Liu, Yuris A. Dzenis Jan 2011

Simulation Of Electrospun Nanofiber Deposition On Stationary And Moving Substrates, Linhua Liu, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Electrospinning produces continuous fibers with diameters from single nanometers to microns by jetting polymer solutions in high electric fields. Electrospun non-woven filamentary materials attract rapidly growing interest for broad range of applications. Properties of these materials depend on their nano- and microstructure that is determined in turn by the electric field and nanofiber collector. Despite critical importance, deposition of electrospun fibers on substrates has not yet been extensively studied theoretically and new methods of nanofiber collection continue to be developed mostly empirically. The objective of this Letter was to develop and demonstrate numerical simulation of electrospun nanofiber deposition on moving …

Modeling Of Solvent Evaporation From Polymer Jets In Electrospinning, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yury Salkovskiy, Yuris A. Dzenis Jan 2011

Modeling Of Solvent Evaporation From Polymer Jets In Electrospinning, Xiang-Fa Wu, Yury Salkovskiy, Yuris A. Dzenis

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Solvent evaporation plays a critical role in nanofiber formation in electrospinning. Here, we present a nonlinear mass diffusion-transfer model describing the drying process in dilute polymer solution jets. The model is used to predict transient solvent concentration profiles in polyacrylonitrile/ N,N-dimethylformamide (PAN/DMF) jets with the initial radii ranging from 50µm down to 100 nm. Numerical simulations demonstrate high transient inhomogeneity of solvent concentration over the jet cross-section in microscopic jets. The degree of inhomogeneity decreases for finer, submicron jets. The simulated jet drying time decreases rapidly with the decreasing initial jet radius, from seconds for microjets to single milliseconds for …

Benefits Of Cpfr And Vmi Collaboration Strategies In A Variable Demand Environment, Dattaraj Kamalapurkar

Dissertations

In recent years, practitioners and academic researchers have emphasized that organizations need to collaborate with suppliers and customers to improve their competitive advantage. The availability of cost efficient information technologies like EDI, XML, etc. have made it possible to develop and implement many forms of collaboration strategies. Among them, Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) and Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) are most popular, which are considered for this study. While many studies have identified the benefits of demand information sharing in supply chains; however the benefits gained by implementing collaboration strategies like VMI and CPFR in a variable demand environment …

Ductile Mode Material Removal Of Ceramics And Semiconductors, Deepak Ravindra Jan 2011

Ductile Mode Material Removal Of Ceramics And Semiconductors, Deepak Ravindra

Dissertations

Ceramics and semiconductors are hard, strong, inert and lightweight. They also have good optical properties, wide energy bandgap and high maximum current density. This combination of properties makes them ideal candidates for tribological, semiconductor, MEMS and optoelectronic applications respectively. Manufacturing these materials without causing surface and subsurface damage is extremely challenging due to their high hardness, brittle characteristics and poor machinability. However, ductile regime machining of these materials is possible due to the high-pressure phase transformation occurring in the material caused by the high compressive stresses induced by the single point diamond tool tip. In this study, to further augment …

Road Surface Mirage: A Bunch Of Hot Air?, Zhou Huaichun, Huang Zhifeng, Cheng Qiang, Lu Wei, Qiu Kui, Chen Chen, Hsu Pei-Feng Jan 2011

Road Surface Mirage: A Bunch Of Hot Air?, Zhou Huaichun, Huang Zhifeng, Cheng Qiang, Lu Wei, Qiu Kui, Chen Chen, Hsu Pei-Feng

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

The inferior mirage from road surfaces is a common phenomenon, which can be easily seen in everyday life. It has been recognized in the literature as a light refraction phenomenon due to the refractive index gradient caused by the temperature gradient in the air strata above the road surfaces. However, it was also suggested that the mirage is just a phenomenon of specular reflection at grazing incidence. Because of the lack of reasonable and quantitative evidence, the generally accepted light refraction theory has not yet been refuted. Here we show some mirror-like reflection images captured from a road surface stretch …

An Evaluation Of Non-Contact Temperature Measurements For Oxyacetylene Torch Testing Of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics, Justin Cotter Jan 2011

An Evaluation Of Non-Contact Temperature Measurements For Oxyacetylene Torch Testing Of Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics, Justin Cotter

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The feasibility of using noncontact measurement devices in oxy-acetylene torch ablation testing for UHTCs has been investigated. UHTCs are candidate materials for use in hypersonic and atmospheric re-entry vehicles for their oxidation resistance and thermal capabilities and an oxy-acetylene torch rig is being used to screen materials that show promise for these applications. Non-contact temperature measurement devices have been used for similar testing, but there are some potential issues regarding their use, such as changing emissivity of the UHTCs and combustion interferences. The feasibility of using non-contact temperature measurement devices will be evaluated through the use of thermocouples and a …

Residual Stress Analysis Of Composite Cannon Barrel, Tyler Brockel, Ozan Ozdemir Jan 2011

Residual Stress Analysis Of Composite Cannon Barrel, Tyler Brockel, Ozan Ozdemir

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

The objective of this paper is to describe the process and results of a residual stress analysis done on a composite cannon barrel. A cross section of a full cannon barrel was cut off to be used in the analysis. The barrel cross section was composed of an inner steel layer that was wrapped in an outer composite layer. The residual stress analysis was done using x-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD machine uses different types of x-ray tubes based on what material it is analyzing. For this reason, the first portion of the experiment dealt with finding the exact material …

Influence Of Stitch Density And Stitch Thread Thickness On Compression After Impact Strength Of Stitched Composites, Kwek Tze Tan, N. Watanabe, Y. Iwahori, T. Ishikawa Jan 2011

Influence Of Stitch Density And Stitch Thread Thickness On Compression After Impact Strength Of Stitched Composites, Kwek Tze Tan, N. Watanabe, Y. Iwahori, T. Ishikawa

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

This study aims to investigate the influence of stitch density and stitch thread thickness on compression after impact (CAI) strength of stitched composites. Unstitched laminated composites and specimens stitched with varying stitch density and stitch thread thickness are subjected to impact damage and then compressive loading. It is shown that stitched composites have higher CAI strength than unstitched counterpart due to smaller impact-induced delamination area, where local buckling occurs during compressive failure. However, it is revealed that the effectiveness of stitching in suppressing delamination growth and inhibiting sublaminate buckling under compressive loading is intimately related to stitch density. It is …

Advisor: Dr. Naeim Henein

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Enhancing cold start of DI diesel engines is the motivation behind this study. A new control strategy is proposed to reduce the cranking period and the white smoke emissions. In the strategy, the gases leaving the cylinder during the cranking period are recycled back into the intake manifold using two different methods. In the first method the engine-out gases during cranking are recirculated into the intake manifold and their rate …

Experimental Study Of Thermoelectric Properties For Randomly Distributed Carbon Nanotubes And Silicon Carbide Nanoparticles, Onasis Garcia Jan 2011

Experimental Study Of Thermoelectric Properties For Randomly Distributed Carbon Nanotubes And Silicon Carbide Nanoparticles, Onasis Garcia

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this experimental study, the thermoelectric (TE) properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles have been investigated. Nanoparticles were randomly disrtibuted on a non-conductive glass or quartz substrate. The carbon nanotubes used were single-walled and multi-walled type, consisting of approximately 60% semiconducting 40% metallic tubes. The experimental design is analogous to that of a thermocouple measurement, with the nanoparticle layers creating hot and cold joints with a dissimilar metal Alumel (Ni-Al). Voltage (mV), current (μA) and resistance (Ω) values were measured with respect to temperature (°C), and Seeback coefficient values were also calculated in parallel. Summarized results …

Development Of Energy Absorbing Laminated Fiberglass Composites Using Electrospun Glass Nanofibers, Evan Kimbro Jan 2011

Development Of Energy Absorbing Laminated Fiberglass Composites Using Electrospun Glass Nanofibers, Evan Kimbro

Dissertations

The ability to predict failure of composite laminates due to delaminations is critical because of its subsurface nature. Traditional strengthening methods such as stitching and Z-pinning, while improving interlaminar properties in woven composites, lead to a reduction of the in-plane properties. Electrospun non-woven sheets of nanofibrous mat applied at interfacial regions offer an option to traditional treatments. Applications where protrusion energy must be dissipated completely would benefit the most from the use of the electrospinning treatment. Examples are bullet proof vests and vehicle armor. Penetration of a projectile through a composite material may be avoided by creating more energy absorbent …
