Impacting Testing Of High Temperature Ceramics Through The Use Of A Vitiated Heater For Hot And Cold Fire Collisions, Adrian Trejo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Material testing is a crucial step during the design process as particular materials serve as safety and life saving conditions. In this study, a MoSi2 is chosen as the target specimen to undergo impact under high temperatures. An impact apparatus is designed and constructed for the purpose of propelling alumina particles at high velocities. A nozzle using compressed nitrogen gas is used to fire the particle at the desired velocities. Due to the possibility of thermal shock occurring at higher temperatures, a separate nozzle utilizing vitiation heating is designed to fire the particle at equally higher temperatures to prove the …

An Experimental Study Of The Hydrodynamics Of Multiphase Flow In Fluidized Beds, Gerardo Vargas Jan 2009

An Experimental Study Of The Hydrodynamics Of Multiphase Flow In Fluidized Beds, Gerardo Vargas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Fluidized bed reactors have been widely used as a gasifier in coal gasification processes to convert coal into other forms of energy. At this stage, full fluidization is required to attain the best thermochemical reaction within the fluid-solid mixture. This can only be achieved if the fluid is maintained between minimum fluidization and terminal velocities. To better understand the hydrodynamics of multiphase flow, a fluidized bed was designed and constructed to carry out the investigation. Compressed air and 1-mm glass beads were used to determine gas minimum fluidization and terminal velocities at three different particle concentrations. The solids were enclosed …

Laminar Burning Velocities Of Gas Mixtures, Vishwanath Reddy Ardha Jan 2009

Laminar Burning Velocities Of Gas Mixtures, Vishwanath Reddy Ardha

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this study, burning velocities of hydrogen-carbon monoxide (H2-CO) mixtures, which are primary constituents of syngas fuels, are measured. The effect of different burner systems, H2 concentration, and different measurement techniques on the burning velocities of H2-CO mixtures is also discussed. The burning velocities of H2-CO mixtures increase with the increase in H2 content in the mixture. When compared with different burner systems using different methods, the burning velocity data almost coincide in the lean condition, but at rich condition the data stray away from each other. The burning velocities of actual syngas compositions (based on different sources of coal) …

Reconfigurable End Effector Allowing For In-Hand Manipulation Without Finger Gaiting Or Regrasping, Jacob Ames Ziesmer

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The goal of this thesis is to move a step towards the solution of the bin picking problem. A novel metamorphic end effector is proposed, tested for proof of concept and analyzed using standard techniques of degrees of freedom and graph theory as well as a classical dynamic analysis. Once proof of concept was achieved, the results from the analysis were formed into an optimization program with the hope of finding a more stable, predictable mechanism.

Development Of A Velocity Metric For Rigid-Body Planar Motion, Luis Ernesto Criales Escobar Jan 2009

Development Of A Velocity Metric For Rigid-Body Planar Motion, Luis Ernesto Criales Escobar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Two motions of motion quality have been developed for planar motion. They are the "best motion measure" and the "velocity metric". The "best motion measure" identifies the best motion for a given displacement. The "velocity metric" quantifies the discrepancy between two planar motions for the same rigid body.

The best motion measure compares the motion of each particle on the body to an "ideal", but usually unobtainable, motion. This ideal motion moves each particle from its current position to its desired position on a straight-line path. Although the ideal motion is not a valid rigid body motion, this does not …

Mesoscale Behavior Of An Aluminum-Manganese Dioxide-Epoxy Mixture Under Shock Loading: From Milli To Nano-Sized Aluminum Particles, Andrew Fraser Jan 2009

Mesoscale Behavior Of An Aluminum-Manganese Dioxide-Epoxy Mixture Under Shock Loading: From Milli To Nano-Sized Aluminum Particles, Andrew Fraser

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The main focus of this thesis is to explore the dynamic shock compaction of multiple component mixtures, specifically Al-MnO2-Epoxy. This will be facilitated by initially simulating the bulk dynamic response in a mesoscale configuration and then comparing these results to experimental data. The mesoscale simulations were performed in the shock code CTH. The first section will discuss the matching of experimental data to computational results. With the goal of determining the bulk shock Hugoniot, a one-dimensional flyer plate configuration was created while using a grain-geometry imported from an scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrograph of the mixture. Both the …

The Effect Of Office Chair Backrest Design On The Body's Metabolic Response To Office Work, Stephen H. Freier Jan 2009

The Effect Of Office Chair Backrest Design On The Body's Metabolic Response To Office Work, Stephen H. Freier

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Most office chairs have a backrest that is wider at the shoulders than at the hips. Recently, a new office chair was developed that has a backrest that is narrower at the shoulders and wider at the hips (upwardly tapered backrest). The upwardly tapered backrest should allow users to increase their ventilatory efficiency, compared to a conventional, wide backrest. This new backrest design will hypothetically allow a user to retract their scapulae, increase expansion of the chest cavity, thus allowing the lungs more space to expand. Specific measures of improved ventilatory efficiency are an increase in tidal volume (Vt …

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa Jan 2009

A Mixed-Dimensionality Modeling Approach For Interaction Of Heterogeneous Steam Reforming Reactions And Heat Transfer, Jeroen Valensa

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Hydrogen is most often produced on an industrial scale by catalytic steam methane reforming, an equilibrium-limited, highly endothermic process requiring the substantial addition of heat at elevated temperatures. The extent of reaction, or conversion efficiency, of this process is known to be heat transfer limited. Scaling the industrial process equipment down to the size required for small, compact fuel cell systems has encountered difficulties due to increased heat losses at smaller scales. One promising approach to effectively scale down the reforming process is to coat the catalyst directly onto the heat exchange surfaces of an integrated reactor/heat exchanger. In this …

Development And Implementation Of Novel Bristle Tool For Surface Treatment Of Metallic Components, Piyush Khullar Jan 2009

Development And Implementation Of Novel Bristle Tool For Surface Treatment Of Metallic Components, Piyush Khullar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Despite advances in paints and coatings technology, protective coatings are prone to eventual corrosion, degradation and/or failure. Consequently, a corrosive layer will develop that can undermine the performance and integrity of structural components. Therefore, both the corrosive layer and defunct coating must be periodically removed, and an acceptable level of surface cleanliness and texture must be obtained prior to the reapplication of new paint. Currently, an array of processes and equipment are used for efficiently cleaning and conditioning metallic surfaces, such as grit blasting, needle guns, and a variety of non-woven and coated abrasive tools.

This research investigates the method …

Oxidation Modeling By Means Of Molecular Dynamics, Chaiyod Soontrapa Jan 2009

Oxidation Modeling By Means Of Molecular Dynamics, Chaiyod Soontrapa

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Oxidation modeling is normally engineered to study systems at macroscopic scales, mostly in analytical forms based on diffusion theories. The associated time scale is usually in months, days, or minutes, and the length scale is in the order of microns. In this dissertation, oxidation modeling is performed at atomistic scale with the time and length scales in picoseconds and angstroms, respectively, using molecular dynamics. Molecular dynamics simulations generate trajectories of each atom or particle in a system according to the laws of physics. Studying oxidations under the atomistic point of view can offer new insights on atomic behaviors and influencing …

Fracture Toughness, Crack-Growth-Rate And Creep Studies Of Alloy 276, Joydepp Pal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Austenitic nickel-base Alloy 276 had been proposed to be a candidate structural material within the purview of the nuclear hydrogen initiative program. A mechanistic understanding of high temperature tensile deformation of this alloy has already been presented in an earlier investigation. The current investigation has been focused on the evaluation of crack-growth behavior, fracture toughness, stress-corrosion-cracking and creep deformation of this alloy as functions of different metallurgical and mechanical variables. The results of crack-growth study under cyclic loading indicate that this alloy exhibited greater cracking tendency with increasing temperature at a constant load ratio (R). However, the effect of temperature …

Effects Of Mechanical And Metallurgical Variables On Creep, Fracture Toughness And Crack Growth Behavior Of Alloy 617, Muhammad Hasibul Hasan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nickel base Alloy 617 has been identified to be a suitable structural material for heat exchanger applications in both hydrogen and electricity generation using nuclear heat. A maximum operating temperature of 950°C has been specified by department of energy (DOE) for both applications to achieve a maximum possible efficiency. Therefore, an extensive investigation has been pursued to evaluate time-dependent-deformation (Creep) of this alloy as functions of temperature and applied load. The results indicate that this alloy exhibited severe creep deformation, characterized by development of an instantaneous tertiary creep region at 850 and 950°C under applied stresses corresponding to its 35% …

Selection Of Pressure Equation For Preliminary Planing Hull Design Using Modified Analytical Hierarchy Process, Pamela Sue Fergen Jan 2009

Selection Of Pressure Equation For Preliminary Planing Hull Design Using Modified Analytical Hierarchy Process, Pamela Sue Fergen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the early stages of design when data availability is limited, engineers often times rely upon experience and regression analysis to select the most suitable design equation among many competitive ones. This study presents an alternative that applies a modified Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to select the most suitable design equation. The Analytical Hierarchy Process, a multi-criteria decision making method, has been utilized in the business and management world to collect and evaluate experts' opinions in order to arrive at a final decision. The Analytical Hierarchy Process employed here will treat each of the design equations as an expert and …

Procedure To Validate Direct Numerical Simulations Of Wall-Bounded Turbulence Including Finite-Rate Reactions, Lian Duan, M. Pino Martín

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper first discusses the constitutive relations and surface catalytic model for direct numerical simulation of wall-bounded turbulence including finite-rate chemistry and gas-surface interaction and then provides a systematic procedure to test the validity of the simulations by dividing the whole problem into different components and testing each component separately. Namely, comparisons against similarity solutions and other established hypersonic boundary-layer solutions are used to test the validity of laminar mean flow with and without gas-phase chemical reactions; comparisons against the analytic solution for the one-dimensional diffusion equation are used to test the validity of the surface catalysis boundary condition; and …

The Effect Of Polydispersivity On The Thermal Conductivity Of Particulate Thermal Interface Materials, Sasanka Kanuparthi, Ganesh Subbarayan, Thomas Siegmund, Bahgat Sammakia Jan 2009

The Effect Of Polydispersivity On The Thermal Conductivity Of Particulate Thermal Interface Materials, Sasanka Kanuparthi, Ganesh Subbarayan, Thomas Siegmund, Bahgat Sammakia

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A critical need in developing thermal interface materials (TIMs) is an understanding of the effect of particle/matrix conductivities, volume loading of the particles, the size distribution, and the random arrangement of the particles in the matrix on the homogenized thermal conductivity. Commonly, TIM systems contain random spatial distributions of particles of a polydisperse (usually bimodal) nature. A detailed analysis of the microstructural characteristics that influence the effective thermal conductivity of TIMs is the goal of this paper. Random microstructural arrangements consisting of lognormal size-distributions of alumina particles in silicone matrix were generated using a drop-fall-shake algorithm. The generated microstructures were …

Effects Of Aggregate Structure On Hot-Mix Asphalt Rutting Performance In Low Traffic Volume Local Pavements, Yong-Rak Kim, Hee Mun Park, Francisco Thiago Sacramento Aragão, Jamilla Emi Sudo Lutif

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of mix gradations associated with the Superpave restricted zone on rutting potential specifically for low traffic volume roadways. Although the elim-ination of the restricted zone requirement in Superpave mix design is highly recommended, some questions still remain unanswered as the research conclusions supporting the elimination of the re-stricted zone were largely made for medium to high traffic volume roadways, where aggregates are highly crushed and of good quality. The applicability of such research conclusions based on high traffic volume mixes needs to be verified for low volume mixes because many …

Flashback Propensity Of Gas Mixtures, Bidhan Kumar Dam Jan 2009

Flashback Propensity Of Gas Mixtures, Bidhan Kumar Dam

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this study, experimental measurements of flashback propensity of hydrogen (H2)-carbon monoxide (CO) mixtures, which are the primary constituents of syngas fuels, are described. The effects of H2 concentration, diluents and swirl on the flashback propensity of H2 CO flames are discussed. For boundary layer type flashback, the critical velocity gradient (gF) values of 5 to 95%, 15 to 85%, and 25 to 75% H2-CO mixtures somewhat agree with the scaling relation (g_F=c (S_L^2)/α) and yield an average c value of 0.038. At a lower SL2/α ratio, burner diameters have small effects on critical velocity gradient measurements; however, the effect …

The objective of this thesis was to determine the feasibility of using loop heat pipes to dissipate waste heat from power electronics to the skin of a fighter aircraft and examine the performance characteristics of a titanium-water loop heat pipe under stationary and elevated acceleration fields. In the past, it has been found that the boundary condition at the condenser can be a controlling factor in the overall performance of this type of thermal management scheme. Therefore, the heat transfer removed from the aircraft skin has been determined by modeling the wing as a flat plate at zero-incidence as a …

There is no doubt that nature has existed as the very inspiration for many of technological achievements of today. Flight is no exception though our conventional methods of flight seem to be completely devoid of any flapping modes commonly seen in insects and birds. This is because the unsteady characteristics of natures keen flight capabilities is very difficult to study. However, as our computational and experimental methods of investigation have improved, our imagination again begins to turn to this one aspect of flight that has eluded man thus far. Birds and more specifically insects are capable of flying at such …

Graphene nanoribbons are among the recently discovered carbon nanostructures, with unique characteristics for novel applications. One of the most important features of graphene nanoribbons, from both basic science and application points of view, is their electrical conductivity. In this research, we study the electrical conductance of single and double layer nanoribbons of specified widths and edge geometries. The calculations are carried out using ab initio quantum mechanical simulations for obtaining the optimized atomic configurations of the nanoribbons and their electronic structures. These results are then used to calculate the conductance characteristics via Green's function approach to the Landauer's formalism. We …

Identifying Structurally Significant Items Using Matrix Reanalysis Techniques, Bhushan M. Kable Jan 2009

Identifying Structurally Significant Items Using Matrix Reanalysis Techniques, Bhushan M. Kable

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of critical structural items for an aircraft structural system is crucial for any risk integrated design and maintenance procedure. These critical items are those whose failure can cause catastrophic damage to the entire structure or result in loss of availability. For example, failure of the fuselage longeron of an F-15 aircraft resulted in the separation of the aircraft cockpit from the rest of the structure, resulting in a complete loss of the aircraft. This is clearly a critical structural item that was identified during the design process but did not have appropriate design, manufacturing, or maintenance controls that could …
