In this thesis, on-chip liquid-liquid microextraction and separation using electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidics was demonstrated by considering room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) and DI water as two liquid phases, which form immiscible interface with each other. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have been actively investigated as replacements for the organic solvents and various "task-specific" ionic liquids (TSIL) are being developed which exhibit many attractive properties such as selectivity to specific biomolecules. In this letter, we analyze the quasistatic and dynamic magnetoelectric responses of multiferroic composite nanofibers consisting of both ferroelectric and ferromagnetic phases and demonstrate that the nanofibers exhibit magnetoelectric responses orders of magnitude higher than multiferroic composite thin films of similar compositions. The analysis suggests that the multiferroic nanofibers are promising for magnetoelectric applications.

To investigate the self-assembled growth of organosilane molecules carrying Si, C and H to form multiple layers, samples were prepared in toluene and then transferred to TEM Cu grids coated with thin C films for TEM observation. It is surprising that micrometer sized flakes with a main composition of Mg and Si (or Al and Si) were occasionally observed in the TEM specimens, later were identified as lizardite-1T phase. To trace down the source of the inorganic particles, all procedures in the sample preparation were carefully checked. We study electrode shape and size for plates of hexagonal crystals or polarized ceramics with the sixfold axis or the poling direction parallel to the plate surfaces so that they can be excited into thickness-shear vibration by an electric field in the plate thickness direction. Electrode size and shape optimal in the sense that they satisfy the criterion of Bechmann’s number in every direction are determined.

We analyze coupled flexural vibration of two elastically and electrically connected piezoelectric beams near resonance for converting mechanical vibration energy to electrical energy. Each beam is a so-called piezoelectric bimorph with two layers of piezoelectrics. The 1D equations for bending of piezoelectric beams are used for a theoretical analysis. An exact analytical solution to the beam equations is obtained. Numerical results based on the solution show that the two resonances of individual beams can be tuned as close as desired by design when they are connected to yield a wide-band electrical output. We study the fully three-dimensional Stokes flow within a geometry consisting of two infinite cones with coincident apices. The Stokes approximation is valid near the apex and we consider the dominant flow features as it is approached. The cones are assumed to be stationary and the flow to be driven by an arbitrary far-field disturbance. We express the flow quantities in terms of eigenfunction expansions and allow for the first time for nonaxisymmetric flow regimes through an azimuthal wave number. This research focused on retrofitting the stereolithography (SL), a rapid prototyping technology, inside a laminar flow hood to provide an aseptic, particulate-free environment for scaffold fabrication. Two of the important objectives of this project were to retrofit the commercial SLA 250/30 inside a laminar flow hood to demonstrate that the manufacturability of the Bio-SL system was comparable to original SLA 250 system and to conduct the sterility test on fabricated scaffolds to show that the laminar flow hood was able to provide an aseptic, particulate-free environment for the fabrication.

The spectral collocation method is a numerical approximation technique that seeks the solution of a differential equation using a finite series of infinitely differentiable basis functions. This inherently global technique enjoys an exponential rate of convergence and has proven to be extremely effective in computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents a basic review of the spectral collocation method. The derivation is driven with an example of the approximation to the solution of a 1D Helmholtz equation. There has been plenty of research on the fluid dynamic effects on different spheres, including sports balls, such as baseballs. Baseball pitches have different velocities, rotation rates and orientations which will cause the baseball to move in different directions. There has also been plenty of research on the aerodynamics of curveballs, but not nearly as much on knuckleballs. The difference between the two is that the knuckleball has a much slower rotation rate and a different initial orientation. This causes the baseball to "knuckle," or moving erratically. The adaptive grid concept is developed in order to achieve more accurate and stable results for the numerical simulations of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). There are two main types of strategies used for adaptive grids: local refinement by increasing the number of elements (h-refinement) and deforming grids where the number of elements remains fixed (r-refinement). The h-refinement method requires inserting additional elements and nodes in a certain region of the mesh. This significantly affects the software data structure and makes programming more difficult.
