Study Of Characteristics Of Plasma Nitriding And Oxidation Of Superalloy In738lc, Mary Shanti Pampana

IN738LC is a nickel base superalloy, widely used in various applications in turbine engines at high temperatures. Its oxidation and nitriding characteristics were focused in this study. Oxidation kinetics of IN738LC in dry air was studied at selected temperatures, specially chosen depending on the chemical dynamics of the alloy at such high temperatures during annealing. Isothermal oxidation in dry air was carried out at 1000°C, 1090°C, 1140°C and 1190°C. XRD results indicated an interesting onset of preferred orientation in the ã’ depleted layer in all the samples. The XPS and XRD analyses revealed the main oxide phases present in the …

Conventional airliners use two to four engines in a Cayley-type arrangement to provide thrust, and the thrust is concentrated right behind the engine. Distributed propulsion is the idea of redistributing the thrust across most, or all, of the wingspan of an aircraft. This can be accomplished by using several large engines and using a duct to spread out the exhaust flow to form a jet-wing or by using many small engines spaced along the span of the wing. This paper presents a method for the design of PID-type controllers, including those augmented by a filter on the D element, satisfying a required gain margin and an upper bound on the (complementary) sensitivity for a finite set of plants. Important properties of the method are: (i) it can be applied to plants of any order including non-minimum phase plants, plants with delay, plants characterized by quasi-polynomials, unstable plants and plants described by measured data, (ii) the sensors associated with the PI terms and the D term can be different (i.e., they can have different transfer function models), (iii) the …

In mid-July 2003, the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command (TACOM) performed a series of experiments at Keweenaw Research Center (KRC), with a remote operated mine roller system. This system, named Panther Lite, consists of two M113 Armored Personnel Carriers (APC’s) connected by a Tandem Vehicle Linkage Assembly (TVLA). The system has three sets of mine rollers, two of which are connected to the front of the lead vehicle with one set trailing from the trail vehicle. In order to enhance the fundamental understanding of thin film evaporation and thereby improve the critical design concept for two-phase heat transfer devices, microscale heat and mass transport is to be investigated for the transition film region using state-of-the-art optical diagnostic techniques. By utilizing a microgravity environment, the length scales of the transition film region can be extended sufficiently, from submicron to micron, to probe and measure the microscale transport fields which are affected by intermolecular forces. Compressed air is typically one of the most expensive utilities in an industrial facility. As a result, potential savings opportunities are aggressively sought out and identified. Once identified, projected energy savings must be calculated in order to justify the cost of implementing the savings opportunity. It is important to calculate projected energy and cost savings as accurately as possible. The flow field around a low pressure turbine (LPT) blade cascade model with and without flow control is examined using ejector nozzle (EN) and vortex generator jet (VGJ) geometries for separation control. The cascade model consists of 6 Pak-B Pratt andamp; Whitney low pressure turbine blades with Re = 30,000-50,000 at a free-stream turbulence intensity of 0.6%. The EN geometry consists of combined suction and blowing slots near the point of separation. One of the key technologies for the deployment of acceleratordriven transmutation systems is the accelerator itself. Elliptical superconducting niobium cavities are used to increase the efficiency of the high-power accelerators needed to support the transmutation mission.

One of the major sources of energy loss from a superconducting accelerator cavity is a process known as multiple impacting (or “multipacting”) of electrons. This phenomenon limits the maximum amount of energy and power that the niobium cavity can store. Ground-source heat pump technology is currently undergoing rapid growth in Ireland. Three aspects of ground-source heat pumps have been studied in this thesis. The market expansion taking place in Ireland, heat transfer from the soil to the pipe of a ground- source heat pump collector, and the design of an innovative sub-slab ground-source heat pump system.

It has been observed that finite element or finite difference model of order can approximate with fair accuracy less than one-third of the eigenvalues of the underlying continuous system corresponding to the low spectrum. The new discrete model, namely the spectral conforming model, is developed to predict the eigenvalues of continuous systems in both the low and high spectra. Presently, effective cooling of modern low NOx combustor liners is achieved through combinations of innovative impingement configurations and other heat transfer enhancement methods. An inherent characteristic of conventional impingement configurations is the occurrence of downstream heat transfer degradation due to increased crossflow effects. Thermal interface materials (TIMs) are used in electronics cooling applications to decrease the thermal contact resistance between surfaces in contact. A methodology to determine the optimal volume fraction of filler particles in TIMs for minimizing the thermal contact resistance is presented. The method uses finite element analysis to solve the coupled thermo-mechanical problem. It is shown that there exists an optimal filler volume fraction which depends not only on the distribution of the filler particles in a TIM but also on the thickness of the TIM layer, the contact pressure and the shape and the size of the filler particles. …

This is a design project of an air-filter sensor to be used in home heating and cooling system. The project includes conceptual design, analysis, implementation, tests and modifications. First, the air quality and power consumption between a clean air filter and a dirty air filter is studied. Then, a photo sensor circuit with an ultra high brightness LED emitter and a phototransistor receiver is used to detect dust particles. Lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a candidate as a spallation target in sub-critical transmutation systems and as a coolant in nuclear programs. One of the primary concerns with LBE systems is the corrosion of stainless steel, the primary structural material used in nuclear systems. To mitigate this problem, trace levels of oxygen can be introduced into the system, causing the formation of a protective oxide layer at the interface between the LBE and steel. To protect the steel components, this oxide layer must be properly maintained. However, too much oxygen will produce unwanted oxide precipitation within the coolant and elsewhere in …

A remotely accessible solar energy laboratory has been developed for real-time experimentation using solar heating and photovoltaic equipment that is physically located at Purdue University. Indiana high school students are the first customers for this on-line resource. In addition to sensor data, the web-based laboratory includes lesson plans, tutorials, assessment questions, and a feedback utility. This project is helping science teachers meet new state science standards from the Indiana Department of Education, which call for hands-on laboratory activities and real time data analysis. Structural components machined from aluminum forgings can exhibit distortion and poor dimensional quality due to residual stresses formed primarily during heat treatment. To alleviate these problems, mechanically stress-relieved tempers are used in which a small amount of plastic strain is introduced after solution heat treatment and prior to aging. For hand-forged billets and die forgings, this strain is introduced by compression. Process specifications for compression stress relief typically allow a range of strains, and this process variability can in turn lead to inconsistent forging performance in machining. Two new methods for the efficient parallel computation of the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are presented. Such efficient methods are desired for large scale parallel computations of unsteady turbulent flows such as Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The performance of the new methods has a distinct advantage over the artificial compressibility method, in that the methods exhibit robust convergence for a variety of flow problems without extensive need for tuning computational parameters. These films exhibit unique mechanical, chemical and electronic properties and thus, possess great potential for applications in tribology. An array of four fuel injector nozzles, each with micrometer-scale swirlers and a microhole, is created on a single coupon. The nozzles are intended to atomize fuel to blend with swirling air before ejecting into a trapped-vortex combustion chamber. A first-generation metal prototype is fabricated in order to form the micro features, supply the fuel and gas to the nozzles, and guide the mixture to the combustion chamber. Orthopedic footwear plays an important role as a treatment and prevention of foot conditions associated with diabetes.
