Compressible Flow Modeling In A Low Pressure Natural Gas Fuel Injector, Eugene D. White Jr.
Compressible Flow Modeling In A Low Pressure Natural Gas Fuel Injector, Eugene D. White Jr.
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In 1997, Siemens Automotive in Newport News, Virginia, conducted mass flow experiments on their DEKA IV natural gas fuel injector using nitrogen gas as the test fluid. The mass flow rates measured from the steady state flow experiments increased linearly with increasing upstream reservoir pressure. This relationship in the experimental data suggested that a choked flow condition must exist somewhere inside the injector.
To test this hypothesis, nitrogen gas flow through the internal passages of a fuel injector at steady state was simulated using computational fluid dynamics software. Several numerical models were constructed. Axisymmetric two-dimensional models were constructed of the …

Florida Photovoltaic Buildings Program: Status Report, Observations And Lessons Learned, Florida Solar Energy Center, Jennifer Szaro
FSEC Energy Research Center®
The Florida PV Buildings Program is a collaborative effort among the Florida Energy Office of the Department of Community Affairs (FEO/DCA), Sandia National Laboratories, the photovoltaic industry, nine end-user groups, and the Florida Solar Energy Center. It complements the federal government's Million Solar Roofs Initiative (MSRI), which calls for one million solar installations in the U.S. by 2010. Based on the present level of activity and assuming a relatively small growth rate, it is estimated that approximately 140,000 solar pool and domestic water heating systems will be installed in Florida by 2010, as well as 20,000 utility-interactive rooftop photovoltaic systems.

Movement Coupling At The Ankle During The Stance Phase Of Running, Alex Stacoff, Benno M. Nigg, Christoph Reinschmidt, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Arne Lundberg, Edgar Stüssi, Jachen Denoth
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to quantify movement coupling at the ankle during the stance phase of running using bone-mounted markers. Intracortical bone pins with reflective marker triads were inserted under standard local anaesthesia into the calcaneus and the tibia of five healthy male subjects. The three-dimensional rotations were determined using a joint coordinate system approach. Movement coupling was observed in all test subjects and occurred in phases with considerable individual differences. Between the shoe and the calcaneus coupling increased after midstance which suggested that the test shoes provided more coupling for inversion than for eversion. Movement coupling between …

The Air Force Institute Of Technology (Afit) Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (Mems) Interferometric Gyroscope (Mig), Jeremy P. Stringer
Theses and Dissertations
With the invention of Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) it has become possible to fabricate micro-inertial sensors. These new sensors have application in creating autonomous guided weapons systems. New technologies like Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), which cannot use conventional inertial sensors, rely on technologies like micro-inertial sensors to operate. Also, such sensors have the capability to reduce both power and space consumption on conventional aircraft. This technology is not yet mature, and current micro-inertial sensors do not have the accuracy required for highly precise navigation. To try to increase the accuracy of micro-inertial sensors, researchers are turning toward micro-optical gyroscopes. …

1.3 μm InGaAsN:Sb/GaAs multiple-quantum-well laser diodes have been grown by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy using Sb as a surfactant. A low threshold of 1.1 kA/cm² was achieved for broad-area laser diodes under pulsed operation at room temperature. High-temperature device characterization revealed characteristic temperatures (T₀) of 92 and 54 K for operating temperatures below and above 75°C, respectively, as well as a lasing-wavelength temperature dependence of 0.36 nm/°C.
Reconfiguration And Tool Path Planning Of Hexapod Machine Tools, Zhenqun Li
Reconfiguration And Tool Path Planning Of Hexapod Machine Tools, Zhenqun Li
Dissertations
Hexapod machine tools have the potential to achieve increased accuracy, speed, acceleration and rigidity over conventional machines, and are regarded by many researchers as the machine tools of the next generation. However, their small and complex workspace often limits the range of tasks they can perform, and their parallel structure raises many new issues preventing the direct use of conventional tool path planning methods. This dissertation presents an investigation of new reconfiguration and tool path planning methods for enhancing the ability of hexapods to adapt to workspace changes and assisting them in being integrated into the current manufacturing environments.

Experimental Studies And Modeling Of Mechanical Properties And Morphologies Of In Situ Polymer Composites, Zhigang Li
Dissertations
In this study, a series of experiments was set up in order to analyze the morphology development and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/ liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) blends. Simulations of the injection molded blends at various process conditions were performed using CMOLD. In order to determine the effect of the processing parameters on the deformation of the LCP domains during the injection molding, a new analytical method to analyze the melt flow in the advancing melt front (AMF) region was developed. By combining the simulations of the injection molding and analysis of the melt flow in the AMF region, …

Segregation And Flow Characterization In Vibrated Hopper, Thottiam P. Ravichandran
Theses
Experiments and numerical simulation studies were carried. out on vertically vibrated wedge-type hoppers containing binary mixtures for the present research. The studies focussed on segregation analysis of the hopper discharge and the characterization of flow pattern of the binary mixtures in sealed hoppers, over wide ranges of frequency and amplitude of acceleration to determine the effect of these parameters.
The results of segregation study show that vibration promotes segregation of the binary mixtures. However, increase in frequency was found to make the contents of segregated discharge more uniform. Also, increase in wedge angle seemed to help in reducing segregation.

General Parallel-Leg Mechanism : Position Analysis, Hans Buus Gangwar
General Parallel-Leg Mechanism : Position Analysis, Hans Buus Gangwar
Theses
This thesis proposes to analytically express the positions of the legs (each leg has a length and two spin orientations) for a parallel leg mechanism in terms of a single variable. The only limitations imposed are the leg bases are all on the same reference plane and the tool orientation is normal to the mobile upper plate. This is done for a parallel leg mechanism having any number of legs. The variable chosen is the first leg's vertex position on the upper plate.
The state space is the space the configuration can occupy. By looking at a planar slice of …

Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi
Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi
Articles
Finite difference methods, when applied to the differential equations modelling energy flows in buildings, give rise to a system of non-linear difference equations. A frequently used direct solution method involving linearization is analysed and a related method proposed. These and one other connected method are compared using a building related test problem prepared for this purpose. The proposed numerical method is found to produce least error, about 30% less than the commonly used method, and it is recommended for inclusion in building energy simulation software. A fundamental method for estimating the pre conditioning period of a building, arising from the …

Convergence Analysis Of Adaptive Critic Based Optimal Control, S. N. Balakrishnan, Xin Liu
Convergence Analysis Of Adaptive Critic Based Optimal Control, S. N. Balakrishnan, Xin Liu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Adaptive critic based neural networks have been found to be powerful tools in solving various optimal control problems. The adaptive critic approach consists of two neural networks which output the control values and the Lagrangian multipliers associated with optimal control. These networks are trained successively and when the outputs of the two networks are mutually consistent and satisfy the differential constraints, the controller network output produces optimal control. In this paper, we analyze the mechanics of convergence of the network solutions. We establish the necessary conditions for the network solutions to converge and show that the converged solution is optimal.
Mechatronic Design Of A Treaded Mobile Robot For Mine Sweeping, Andrew B. Wright
Mechatronic Design Of A Treaded Mobile Robot For Mine Sweeping, Andrew B. Wright
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Autonomous mobile robots, which can be programmed to exhibit cooperative behaviors, are ideal mechanisms for sweeping land mines. They can spread out to hunt for the mines, using a dispersal rule. Once a mine is located, they can congregate to surround it using a clustering rule. Should a robot be destroyed by tripping an unseen mine, the cost is minimal compared to a human life. UALR has been experimenting with coupled oscillator based rule generators for several years using fragile, indoor robots in a laboratory setting to validate the clustering and dispersal behaviors. In order to accomplish outdoor trials, a …

Breast cancer is currently one of the major causes of death for women in the U.S. Mammography is currently the most effective method for detection of breast cancer and early detection has proven to be an efficient tool to reduce the number of deaths. Mammography is the most demanding of all clinical imaging applications as it requires high contrast, high signal to noise ratio and resolution with minimal x-radiation. According to studies [36], 10% to 30% of women having breast cancer and undergoing mammography, have negative mammograms, i.e. are misdiagnosed. Furthermore, only 20%-40% of the women who undergo biopsy, have …
A Neural Network Methodology For Path Planning And Coordination Of Car-Like Robots, Prasanna Venkatesan Sadagopan
A Neural Network Methodology For Path Planning And Coordination Of Car-Like Robots, Prasanna Venkatesan Sadagopan
Masters Theses
"A car-like indoor mobile robot is a kinematically constrained robot that can be modeled as a 2D object translating and rotating in the horizontal plane among well- defined obstacles. The kinematic constraints impose that the linear velocity of the robot is along its main axis (no sideways motion is possible) and restrict the range of admissible values for the steering angle. The goal of this study is to combine neural network techniques and motion planning algorithms to create a new methodology for coordinating the motion of multiple car-like robots avoiding collision with polygonal obstacles in a work environment. An incremental …

Carryover For Hypersonic '+' And 'X' Configuration Delta Fin Missiles, Harlan F. Nelson
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The Zonal Euler Solver code (ZEUS) is used to predict hypersonic missile flow fields and to determine the carryover factors for the effect of the body on wing lift, Kw(B), and for the effect of the wing on body lift, KB(w). Results are presented for Mach 4, 6, 8, and 10 at an angle of attack of 2 deg. The missile has a conical nose and a cylindrical fuselage with a 1-degree flair angle. Both 'x' and '+' fin configurations are considered. Results are given for 20 and 30 deg semi vertex angles as a function of fur span to …
Tuning Parameter Tolerance Design: Foundations, Methods, And Measures, Daniel A. Mcadams, Kristin L. Wood
Tuning Parameter Tolerance Design: Foundations, Methods, And Measures, Daniel A. Mcadams, Kristin L. Wood
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a novel technique is presented to solve tolerance design problems. To achieve the desired performance tolerance, the technique uses a subtle, but significant, change in the design: the addition of a tuning parameter in place of an increase in component precision. Statistical models are used to develop a framework for the tuning parameter design method. Also developed is a new, dimensionless design metric which ranks candidate tuning parameters. A step-by-step method is developed for the application of tuning parameters using this metric. The step-by-step tuning parameter design method is applied to a heavy-duty manual stapler as a …

Rotary Honing: A Variant Of The Taylor Paint-Scraper Problem, Christopher Hills, H. Moffatt
Articles
The three-dimensional Row in a corner of fixed angle α induced by the rotation in its plane of one of the boundaries is considered. A local similarity solution valid in a neighbourhood of the centre of rotation is obtained and the streamlines are shown to be closed curves. The effects of inertia are considered and are shown to be significant in a small neighbourhood of the plane of symmetry of the flow. A simple experiment confirms that the streamlines are indeed nearly closed; their projections on planes normal to the line of intersection of the boundaries are precisely the 'Taylor' …
