A Dynamic Optimal Trajectory Generator For Cartesian Path Following, Edward Red
A Dynamic Optimal Trajectory Generator For Cartesian Path Following, Edward Red
Faculty Publications
This paper considers a dynamic and adaptive trajectory generator for negotiating paths using S-curves. Applying constant jerk transitions between the constant acceleration and deceleration periods of the trajectory, the trajectory will optimally transition to the desired speed setting. Optimal is defined to be the minimum time to transition from the current speed to the set speed for the move segment when jerk and acceleration are limited. The S-curve equations will adapt to instantaneous changes in speed setting and path length. An integrated motion planner will determine allowable speeds and transitional profiles based on the remaining move distance.
Axisymetric Vibrations Of Homogeneous And Sandwich Spherical Shells With A Hole At The Center, Wai-Kwong Wong
Axisymetric Vibrations Of Homogeneous And Sandwich Spherical Shells With A Hole At The Center, Wai-Kwong Wong
Dissertations
Based on Hamilton's principle and the theory of elasticity, both linear and nonlinear governing equations of motion are derived for elastic spherical shells. Most of the analysis is focused on the free axisymmetric vibrations of homogeneous and sandwich shallow spherical shells. The nonlinear behavior, which allows for small deflections, is also discussed.
The linear vibrations of homogeneous and sandwich shallow spherical shells with a hole at the center are investigated with emphasis placed on the effect of thickness-shear deformation and rotatory inertia. The effects of curvature and the size of the central hole are studied for free axisymmetric motions of …

In hourly energy simulations, it is important to properly predict the performance of air conditioning systems over a range of full and part load operating conditions. An important component of these calculations is to properly consider the performance of the cycling air conditioner and how it interacts with the building. This paper presents improved approaches to properly account for the part load performance of residential and light commercial air conditioning systems in DOE-2. First, more accurate correlations are given to predict the degradation of system efficiency at part load conditions. In addition, a user-defined function for RESYS is developed that …

Factors Influencing Space Heat And Heat Pump Efficiency From A Large-Scale Residential Monitoring Study, Florida Solar Energy Center, Matthew Bouchelle
FSEC Energy Research Center®
Since Florida utilities often experience their system peak during the state's few cold mornings, understanding influences on space heat performance is important to controlling demand. Analysis of heat pump impacts on system load in a large scale monitoring study have shown large levels of strip heat being used during the winter morning peak. The implied coefficient of performance of heat pumps during the system peak hour was only 1.30. Also, analysis of the total seasonal space heat has shown that the implied Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF) of heat pump homes is only 4.4 Btu/W rather than the 6-8 Btu/W …
On Thermal Buckling Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega
On Thermal Buckling Of Patched Beam-Plates, Anette M. Karlsson, W. J. Bottega
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The behavior of uniformly heated plates is considered for the situation where a patch is adhered over a region of the structure. A variational formulation results in a self-consistent set of equations and conditions, which governs the response of the system. The nonlinear problems are solved analytically, yielding exact results within the context of the mathematical model employed. A stability criterion is established for the class of problems considered, based on the second variation of the potential energy of the composite structure, and issues of stability are assessed in this context. Three non-dimensional parameters that characterize the response of the …

This paper compiles power draw, air flow, and static pressure measurements of residential air handlers taken during nine separate field tests of space conditioning systems in Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Canada. The field tests show that air handler devices do not meet basic performance standards and that the interactions between components combine to further degrade overall system efficiency. The findings support conclusions from previous research in Canada that called for a systems approach to improving air handler efficiency. This study reports that fan power consumption in U.S. air conditioners is about 40% higher than estimates used in the DOE …

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
One of the most promising applications of rapid freeze prototyping (RFP) is making metal parts by investment casting with the built ice parts. The integration of RFP and investment casting allows fast creation of complex net-shape metal parts directly from their CAD models. The advantages of doing so include no part geometric complexity limitation, no experience of parting line design and assembling needed, clean and low-cost of process operation, and good performance. In this paper, we will present our recent study on binder selection, slurry making, ceramic shell making, and the casting results of the metal parts.

Determination And Improvement Of Building Speed In Rapid Freeze Prototyping, Wei Zhang, Guanghua Sui, Ming-Chuan Leu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Rapid freeze prototyping (RFP) is a solid freeform fabrication process that builds an ice part by rapidly freezing water in a layer by layer manner. One advantage of this process is the ability to build ice parts faster than other SFF processes. The factors that affect the speed of contour building and interior filling in RFP are identified. The influence of these factors is analyzed through heat transfer and material flow analyses. A model based on heat transfer analysis is proposed to determine the maximum achievable speed of contour building under stable conditions. Experiments are conducted to validate the performance …

Laser Additive Manufacturing Process Planning And Automation, Jun Zhang, Jianzhong Ruan, Frank W. Liou
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a Laser Additive Manufacturing Process Planning (LAMPP) being developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The off-line planning recognizes difficult-to-build features from an STL file, selects optimal part orientation and building directions based on the skeleton information of the object geometry, and optimizes the sub-process sequences for deposition and machining. During the optimization of the subpart building processes, collaboration between the deposition process planner and the machining process planner is needed to check the deposition availability and machinability. As a result, tool paths for both the laser head and the machining head are automatically generated.

Study On Water Deposit In Rapid Freeze Prototyping Process, Guanghua Sui, Weihan Zhang, Ming-Chuan Leu
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) builds a three-dimensional ice part according to its CAD model by depositing and rapidly freezing water in a layer-by-layer manner. To study the water deposit in RFP, assumptions are made based on the deformation of water droplet impinging on a flat substrate, the thermal analysis of a new layer of water deposit, and the characteristics of solidification of a water drop. The equations governing the cross-sectional profile of the water deposit are then established. A model of water deposit is proposed by simplifying the equations under our experimental conditions in RFP. By using this model, equations …

Office of the Provost Scholarship
The focus of this ground-based program is the study of film condensation phenomena under variable, reduced-gravity conditions. Experimental tests, combined with numerical modeling, are employed to gain an improved understanding of the fundamental fluid physics responsible for condensate film growth, film instability and the resulting interfacial motion under variable gravity, and the corresponding implications for heat transfer. There has been relatively little research on the mechanisms operative at the film interface between condensed liquid and its vapor under reduced gravity conditions. Of particular interest are the stability characteristics of the condensate layer, and how they differ from those of films …

A new software, EnergyGauge USA®, is being developed for calculation of energy use in residential buildings. A simplified user interface allows buildings to be quickly defined and evaluated. Utilization of the DOE-2.1E energy simulation engine brings the computing power of hourly simulation to designers and raters. The software has enhancements to better simulate duct systems, air infiltration, attic and foundation thermal performance, heat pump part load characteristics and internal moisture capacitance.
A recurring question with building energy software, regardless of the calculation rigor, is the relative accuracy of the estimates, particularly for cooling loads. To address this question, the software …

Rapid population influx in many Sunbelt cities has led to demands for converting natural areas to housing, many times by clear-cutting large tracts of land. This trend may be affecting the climate for existing and future residents and increasing energy bills. The heat island for large cities has been documented, however the impact of tree canopy on micro-climates in suburban environments has not been researched as much. Tree canopy in micro-climates has implications, both for preserving trees within recently constructed developments, as well as for tree-planting programs. To address this issue, temperature measurements were made over a one year period …
Trajectory Planning For Coordinated Rendezvous Of Unmanned Air Vehicles, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard
Trajectory Planning For Coordinated Rendezvous Of Unmanned Air Vehicles, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard
Faculty Publications
A trajectory generation strategy that facilitates the coordination of multiple unmanned air vehicles is developed. Of particular interest is the planning of threat-avoiding trajectories that result in the simultaneous arrival of multiple UAVs at their targets. In this approach, paths to the target are modeled using the physical analogy of a chain. A unique strength of the planning approach is the ability to specify or alter the path length by adding or subtracting links from the chain. Desirable paths to the target are obtained by simulating the dynamics of the chain where threats apply repulsive forces to the chain and …

Fuel Saving Strategies For Separated Spacecraft Interferometry, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Christopher A. Bailey
Faculty Publications
Separated spacecraft interferometry missions will require spacecraft to move in a coordinated fashion to ensure minimal and balanced consumption of fuel. This paper develops strategies for determining interferometry mission plans that result in significant fuel savings over standard approaches. Simulation results demonstrate that valuable reductions in fuel consumption can be realized by combining the retargeting and imaging maneuvers required to image multiple stellar sources. Fuel-optimal imaging strategies have been developed for two-spacecraft interferometry missions similar to the proposed Space Technology 3 mission using chained local optimization methods. Based on these strategies, sampling pattern guidelines for space-borne interferometry missions have been …

Fluid Flow In Micro-Channels: A Stochastic Approach, Hilda Marino Black
Doctoral Dissertations
In this study free molecular flow in a micro-channel was modeled using a stochastic approach, namely the Kolmogorov forward equation in three dimensions. Model equations were discretized using Central Difference and Backward Difference methods and solved using the Jacobi method. Parameters were used that reflect the characteristic geometry of experimental work performed at the Louisiana Tech University Institute for Micromanufacturing.
The solution to the model equations provided the probability density function of the distance traveled by a particle in the micro-channel. From this distribution we obtained the distribution of the residence time of a particle in the micro-channel. Knowledge of …

Design Of Adaptive Sliding Mode Fuzzy Control For Robot Manipulator Based On Extended Kalman Filter, Abdelrahman Aledhaibi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this work, a new adaptive motion control scheme for robust performance control of robot manipulators is presented. The proposed scheme is designed by combining the fuzzy logic control with the sliding mode control based on extended Kalman filter. Fuzzy logic controllers have been used successfully in many applications and were shown to be superior to the classical controllers for some nonlinear systems. Sliding mode control is a powerful approach for controlling nonlinear and uncertain systems. It is a robust control method and can be applied in the presence of model uncertainties and parameter disturbances, provided that the bounds of …

Effect Of Aggregate Volume Fraction On The Elastic Moduli And Void Ratio Of Cement-Based, Shih-Wei Cho, Chung-Chia Yang, Ran Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The effects of aggregate volume fraction on the void ratio and the elastic modulus of mortar were studied. Cylindrical specimens with six volume fractions (a/t = 0., 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) of fine aggregate and various water/cement ratios (w/c = 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) were cast and tested. Double inclusion model for three-phase composite (matrix, aggregate, and void) was used to predict the volume of total void based on the properties and quantities of the components and composites. Based on this study, when higher volume fraction of aggregate is used in the mix, the elastic modulus of the …

Statistical Continuum Theory For Large Plastic Deformation Of Polycrystalline Materials, Brent L. Adams, S. Ahzi, H. Garmestani, S. Lin
Faculty Publications
This paper focuses on the application of statistical continuum mechanics to the prediction of mechanical response of polycrystalline materials and microstructure evolution under large plastic deformations. A statistical continuum mechanics formulation is developed by applying a Green's function solution to the equations of stress equilibrium in an infinite domain. The distribution and morphology of grains (crystals) in polycrystalline materials is represented by a set of correlation functions that are described by the corresponding probability functions. The elastic deformation is neglected and a viscoplastic power law is employed for crystallographic slip in single crystals. In this formulation, two- and three-point probability …

The manufacturing systems capable of producing several products simultaneously are frequently subject to changes in product types due to demand fluctuations. In such systems a product flexible manufacturing planning and control (MPC) strategy is needed to change from one product type to another with minimum deterioration to system performance levels. The objective of this research is to develop a systematic analysis and evaluation approach in order to compare the MRP-push and JIT-pull strategies quantitatively based on a product flexibility measure. A new product flexibility measure is developed based on the sensitivity to change concept and presented together with the implementation …

Virtual Reality Based Creation Of Concept Model Designs For Cad Systems, Bilal Yehya Maiteh
Dissertations
This work introduces a novel method to overcome most of the drawbacks in traditional methods for creating design models. The main innovation is the use of virtual tools to simulate the natural physical environment in which freeform. Design models are created by experienced designers. Namely, the model is created in a virtual environment by carving a work piece with tools that simulate NC milling cutters.
Algorithms have been developed to support the approach, in which the design model is created in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment and selection and manipulation of tools can be performed in the virtual space. The …

Simulation And Modeling Of Magnetically-Assisted Impaction Coating (Maic) Process For Dry Particle Coating, Bodhisattwa Chaudhuri
Dissertations
The objective of proposed research is to model, and understand the processes happening at multiple length and time scales in magnetically assisted impaction coating process. The smallest length scale is of the order of the molecular size and is important because during collisions the molecules rearrange themselves to form a semi-permanent bond between the core and secondary particles, which is studied by using the results of direct numerical integration of the governing Newton's equations. The effect of parameters such as size, orientation and relative velocity of particles on the collision mechanics is quantified. The largest length scale which is the …

Interaction Of A Vortex Pair And A Free-Surface : Numerical Simulation, Haisheng Ruan
Dissertations
The interaction between a submerged vortex pair with a deformable free-surface in a viscous, incompressible fluid is directly simulated and the flow is thoroughly analyzed. This is a time-dependent nonlinear free-surface problem which we solve numerically by integrating the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and using boundary-fitted coordinates capable of handling large free-surface deformations. In particular, the numerical simulation of the flow at relatively high Reynolds numbers (Re = 500,1000, 2000 ) and relatively high Froude numbers (Fr = 1. 125, Fr = 2.0) is investigated and analyzed for the first time. Details are given regarding the space-time deformation of …
