Adaptive Critic Based Neural Networks For Control-Constrained Agile Missile Control, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1999

Adaptive Critic Based Neural Networks For Control-Constrained Agile Missile Control, Dongchen Han, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the use of an `adaptive critic' based controller to steer an agile missile with a constraint on the angle of attack from various initial Mach numbers to a given final Mach number in minimum time while completely reversing its flightpath angle. We use neural networks with a two-network structure called `adaptive critic' to carry out the optimization process. This structure obtains an optimal controller through solving Hamiltonian equations. This approach needs no external training; each network along with the optimality equations generates the output for the other network. When the outputs are mutually consistent, the controller output is …

Hypersonic Drag And Heat Transfer Reduction Using A Forward Facing Jet, Benjamin Meyer, Harlan F. Nelson, David W. Riggins Jan 1999

Hypersonic Drag And Heat Transfer Reduction Using A Forward Facing Jet, Benjamin Meyer, Harlan F. Nelson, David W. Riggins

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A two-dimensional numerical study of the effects of a forward-facing jet located at the stagnation point of a blunt body on wave drag, heat transfer, and skin friction drag is presented for Mach 6.5 flow at 30 km altitude. The full Navier-Stokes equations are used with variable viscosity and thermal conductivity. It is shown that upstream injection can significantly modify the flow field. If the jet conditions are chosen properly, large reductions in drag and heat transfer can be obtained resulting in possible increases in the volumetric efficiency and static stability of aircraft and reductions in heating protection requirements for …

Environmental Performance Analysis Of Solid Freedom Fabrication Processes, Yanchun Luo, Zhiming Ji, Ming-Chuan Leu, R. J. Caudill Jan 1999

Environmental Performance Analysis Of Solid Freedom Fabrication Processes, Yanchun Luo, Zhiming Ji, Ming-Chuan Leu, R. J. Caudill

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a method for analyzing the environmental performance of solid freeform fabrication (SFF) processes. In this method, each process is divided into life phases. Environmental effects of every process phase are then analyzed and evaluated based on the environmental and resource management data. These effects are combined to obtain the environmental performance of the process. The analysis of the environmental performance of SFF processes considers the characteristics of SFF technology, includes material, energy consumption, processes wastes, and disposal. Case studies for three typical SFF processes: stereolithography (SL); selective laser sintering (SLS); and fused deposition modeling (FDM) are presented …

Machine Tool Accuracy Characterization, Error Modeling And Compensation Using Telescopic Ballbar And Laser Interferometer, Yalcin M. Ertekin Jan 1999

Machine Tool Accuracy Characterization, Error Modeling And Compensation Using Telescopic Ballbar And Laser Interferometer, Yalcin M. Ertekin

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation presents the results of the research investigation on the machine tool accuracy characterization, error modeling and error compensation using telescopic ballbar and laser interferometer. Increasing demand for both higher machine tool accuracy and machining tolerances has resulted in a great need to measure and characterize the accuracy of NC machine tools and minimize machine tool induced errors on machined components before manufacturing parts, instead of inferring it from parts already machined. Using a telescopic magnetic ballbar, the results of the accuracy assessment of an old Bridgeport Series I CNC 2 1/2 axes vertical machining center are presented in …

This study presents the development of flexible tools for the numerical simulation of processing machine drives that consist of servomotors, mechanisms, and machine tools. The simulation allows predicting the motions or vibrations of linkages, forces and torques in joints, motor currents, and system response times as well as evaluating stability and characteristic frequencies of the drive system The simulation tools were implemented as macro components in macro component libraries using the EASY5* Dynamic System Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis software by the Boeing Company. Application of the developed macro components allows fast and efficient modeling of a variety of different drive …

Continuous Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis For Aerodynamic And Acoustic Optimization, Kaveh Ghayour Jan 1999

Continuous Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis For Aerodynamic And Acoustic Optimization, Kaveh Ghayour

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A gradient-based shape optimization methodology based on continuous adjoint sensitivities has been developed for two-dimensional steady Euler equations on unstructured meshes and the unsteady transonic small disturbance equation. The continuous adjoint sensitivities of the Helmholtz equation for acoustic applications have also been derived and discussed.

The highlights of the developments for the steady two-dimensional Euler equations are the generalization of the airfoil surface boundary condition of the adjoint system to allow a proper closure of the Lagrangian functional associated with a general cost functional and the results for an inverse problem with density as the prescribed target. Furthermore, it has …

Computational Modeling Of Airborne Noise Demonstrated Via Benchmarks, Supersonic Jet, And Railway Barrier, Moumen Idres Jan 1999

Computational Modeling Of Airborne Noise Demonstrated Via Benchmarks, Supersonic Jet, And Railway Barrier, Moumen Idres

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the last several years, there has been a growing demand for mobility to cope with the increasing population. All kinds of transportation have responded to this demand by expanding their networks and introducing new ideas. Rail transportation introduced the idea of high-speed trains and air transportation introduced the idea of high-speed civil transport (HSCT). In this expanding world, the noise legislation is felt to inhibit these plans. Accurate computational methods for noise prediction are in great demand.

In the current research, two computational methods are developed to predict noise propagation in air. The first method is based on the …

Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flexible Wings Using The Euler Equations On Unstructured Grids, Arunkumar Satyanarayana Jan 1999

Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis And Design Optimization Of Flexible Wings Using The Euler Equations On Unstructured Grids, Arunkumar Satyanarayana

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Aeroelasticity is a classical discipline. However, even with recent advancement in computational technology, it still remains a challenging discipline. This is particularly true when aeroelasticity problems are solved in a loosely coupled manner. The advantage of a loosely coupled scheme is that the legacy codes of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural mechanics (CSM) can be preserved and used as independent modules in solving the desired aeroelasticity problems. In such a scheme, maintaining proper data transfer (load transfer and deformation tracking between CFD and CSM codes) is crucial in ensuring successful coupled solutions. This can be a challenging task …

Setpoint Tracking Predictive Control In Chemical Processes Based On System Identification, Sinchai Chinvorarat Jan 1999

Setpoint Tracking Predictive Control In Chemical Processes Based On System Identification, Sinchai Chinvorarat

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A Kraft recovery boiler in a pulp-paper mill provides a means for recovery of the heat energy in spent liquor and recovery of inorganic chemicals while controlling emissions. These processes are carried out in a combined chemical recovery unit and steam boiler that is fired with concentrated black liquor and which produces molten smelt. Since the recovery boiler is considered to be an essential part of the pulp-paper mill in terms of energy resources, the performance of the recovery boiler has to be controlled to achieve the highest efficiency under unexpected disturbances.

This dissertation presents a new approach for combining …
