A Design Pathfinder With Material Correlation Points For Inflatable Systems, Jared T. Fulcher Jan 2014

A Design Pathfinder With Material Correlation Points For Inflatable Systems, Jared T. Fulcher

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The incorporation of inflatable structures into aerospace systems can produce significant advantages in stowed volume to mechanical effectiveness and overall weight. Many applications of these ultra-lightweight systems are designed to precisely control internal or external surfaces, or both, to achieve desired performance. The modeling of these structures becomes complex due to the material nonlinearities inherent to the majority of construction materials used in inflatable structures. Furthermore, accurately modeling the response and behavior of the interfacing boundaries that are common to many inflatable systems will lead to better understanding of the entire class of structures. The research presented involved using nonlinear …

Numerical Analysis Of Droplet Formation And Transport Of A Highly Viscous Liquid, Peiding Wang Jan 2014

Numerical Analysis Of Droplet Formation And Transport Of A Highly Viscous Liquid, Peiding Wang

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet print-head has a major share of the market due to simplicity and feasibility of miniature system. The efficiency of droplet generation from DOD print-head is a result of several factors, include viscosity, surface tension, nozzle size, density, driving waveform (wave shape, frequency, and amplitude), etc. Key roles in the formation and behavior of liquid jets and drops combine three dimensionless groups: Reynolds number, Weber number and Ohnesorge number. These dimensionless groups provide some bounds to the “printability” of the liquid. Adequate understanding of these parameters is essential to improve the quality of droplets and provide guidelines for …

Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Jon Mullen Jan 2014

Filtered-Dynamic-Inversion Control For Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Jon Mullen

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Instrumented umanned aerial vehicles represent a new way of measuring turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer. However, autonomous measurements require control methods with disturbance-rejection and altitude command-following capabilities. Filtered dynamic inversion is a control method with desirable disturbance-rejection and command-following properties, and this controller requires limited model information. We implement filtered dynamic inversion as the pitch controller in an altitude-hold autopilot. We design and numerically simulate the continuous-time and discrete-time filtered-dynamic-inversion controllers with anti-windup on a nonlinear aircraft model. Finally, we present results from a flight experiment comparing the filtered-dynamic-inversion controller to a classical proportional-integral controller. The experimental results show …

Investigation Of Filtering Methods For Large-Eddy Simulation, Weiyun Liu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This thesis focuses on the phenomenon of aliasing and its mitigation with two explicit filters, i.e., Shuman and Padé filters. The Shuman filter is applied to velocity components of the Navier--Stokes equations. A derivation of this filter is presented as an approximation of a 1-D “pure math” mollifier and extend this to 2D and 3D. Analysis of the truncation error and wavenumber response is conducted with a range of grid spacings, Reynolds numbers and the filter parameter, β. Plots of the relationship between optimal filter parameter β and grid spacing, L2-norm error and Reynolds number to suggest …

Experimental Studies On The Determination Of Acoustic Bulk Material Properties And Transfer Impedance, Wanlu Li Jan 2014

Experimental Studies On The Determination Of Acoustic Bulk Material Properties And Transfer Impedance, Wanlu Li

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Soft trim absorbing parts (i.e., headliners, backwalls, side panels, etc.) are normally comprised of different layers including films, adhesives, foams and fibers. Several approaches to determine the complex wavenumber and characteristic impedance for porous sound absorbing materials are surveyed and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed. It is concluded that the recently documented three-point method produces the smoothest results. It is also shown that measurement of the flow resistance and the use of empirical equations is sufficient for many common materials. Following this, the transfer impedance of covers, adhesives, and densified layers are measured using an impedance …

Multidimensional Modeling Of Pyrolysis Gas Transport Inside Orthotropic Charring Ablators, Haoyue Weng Jan 2014

Multidimensional Modeling Of Pyrolysis Gas Transport Inside Orthotropic Charring Ablators, Haoyue Weng

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

During hypersonic atmospheric entry, spacecraft are exposed to enormous aerodynamic heat. To prevent the payload from overheating, charring ablative materials are favored to be applied as the heat shield at the exposing surface of the vehicle. Accurate modeling not only prevents mission failures, but also helps reduce cost. Existing models were mostly limited to one-dimensional and discrepancies were shown against measured experiments and flight-data. To help improve the models and analyze the charring ablation problems, a multidimensional material response module is developed, based on a finite volume method framework. The developed computer program is verified through a series of test-cases, …

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This dissertation examines the assessment and mitigation of airborne noise from power generation equipment.

The first half of the dissertation investigates the diagnosis and treatment of combustion oscillations in boilers. Sound is produced by the flame and is reflected downstream from the combustion chamber. The reflected sound waves perturb the mixture flow or equivalence ratio increasing the heat release pulsations and the accompanying sound produced by the flame. A feedback loop model for determining the likelihood of and diagnosing combustion oscillations was reviewed, enhanced, and then validated. The current work applies the feedback loop stability model to two boilers, which …

Decentralized Adaptive Control For Uncertain Linear Systems: Techniques With Local Full-State Feedback Or Local Relative-Degree-One Output Feedback, James D. Polston

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

This thesis presents decentralized model reference adaptive control techniques for systems with full-state feedback and systems with output feedback. The controllers are strictly decentralized, that is, each local controller uses feedback from only local subsystems and no information is shared between local controllers.

The full-state feedback decentralized controller is effective for multi-input systems, where the dynamics matrix and control-input matrix are unknown. The decentralized controller achieves asymptotic stabilization and command following in the presence of sinusoidal disturbances with known spectrum. We present a construction technique of the reference-model dynamics such that the decentralized controller is effective for systems with arbitrarily …

Generated data are examined to identify the phases of the joint formation and the time frame of its evolution. Specifically, the triple line kinetics data are analyzed to verify whether a power law between (1) the triple line of the molten metal preceding joint formation and (2) the formation time can be established for each formation phase. In addition, both initial and residual …

Experimental Characterization Of Roughness And Flow Injection Effects In A High Reynolds Number Turbulent Channel, Mark A. Miller Jan 2013

Experimental Characterization Of Roughness And Flow Injection Effects In A High Reynolds Number Turbulent Channel, Mark A. Miller

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

A turbulent channel flow was used to study the scaling of the combined effects of roughness and flow injection on the mean flow and turbulence statistics of turbulent plane Poiseuille flow. It was found that the additional momentum injected through the rough surface acted primarily to enhance the roughness effects and, with respect to the mean flow, blowing produced similar mean flow effects as increasing the roughness height. This was not found to hold for the turbulence statistics, as a departure from Townsend’s hypothesis was seen. Instead, the resulting outer-scaled streamwise Reynolds stress for cases with roughness and blowing deviated …

Numerical Modeling And Characterization Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays, Johnson Joseph

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Since their discoveries, carbon nanotubes have been widely studied, but mostly in the forms of 1D individual carbon nanotube (CNT). From practical application point of view, it is highly desirable to produce carbon nanotubes in large scales. This has resulted in a new class of carbon nanotube material, called the vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays (VA-CNTs). To date, our ability to design and model this complex material is still limited. The classical molecular mechanics methods used to model individual CNTs are not applicable to the modeling of VA-CNT structures due to the significant computational efforts required. This research is to …

Is Densified Biomass Fuel From Agro-Forestry Waste A Sustainable Energy Option?, William A. Linnig Iii Jan 2012

Is Densified Biomass Fuel From Agro-Forestry Waste A Sustainable Energy Option?, William A. Linnig Iii

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Raw biomass material is bulky, high in void fraction, and very low in transportation efficiency. Furthermore, biomass dissipates quickly in harsh environments of high heat furnaces because of its relatively low calorific value (BTU/lb) and has grinding or size degradation properties highly dissimilar from commonly-used fossil fuels like coal. Therefore, the development of transformational technologies are necessary to convert raw biomass into high-value and useful products of high hardness and calorific value without requiring excessive process energy.

This thesis investigates the sustainability of densified biomass fuels. In addition, a procedure that converts raw biomass from agro/forest industry waste into a …
