Privileging Learning Over Numbers: Developing An Alternative Student Assessment In Engineering, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this research study, a new model to assess student performance and academic learning in engineering disciplines is proposed with the intention of shifting a grade driven mentality into a learning-oriented mindset. The rational for this model of assessment is to disrupt normalized assessment practices in higher education, reframe student thinking regarding learning and acquisition of knowledge, and encourage students to engage in coursework in meaningful ways. Unfortunately, grades in higher education have become a primary focal point for many students as a means to secure internship opportunities, undergraduate research, post-graduation employment, and graduate school acceptance into desired institutions. The …

Structuring Student Success: Incorporating A Genre-Based Pedagogical Method To Improve A Strength Of Materials Laboratory Manual, Eleazar Marquez, Samuel Garcia

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this research study the authors incorporated a pedagogical technique to improve a strength of materials lab manual. The conceptualization and subsequent development of a student friendly lab manual resource emerged from students’ difficulty in understanding the following areas: introduction to experiment, procedures, calculations, and relevancy to class content. Based on a survey conducted before lab manual improvements and modifications, mechanical engineering students expressed high dissatisfaction with the written structure of the manual and felt they spent too much time understanding lab procedures, deciphering what equations to utilize to complete their analyzes, and completing the report. As such, the authors …

The authors conducted a preliminary research study to understand the emotional and academic impact grades have on engineering undergraduate students. Grades in higher education have become a priority for students to secure internship opportunities, post-graduation employment, and graduate school acceptance. However, students’ desire to attain high grades in engineering disciplines may lead to negative effects such as additional anxiety and increased mental exertion, physical exhaustion, and overall lack of work-life balance. A survey was conducted with a cohort of 45 students to understand their perspective on grades before, during, and at the end of the semester, and their responses to …

Mechanical Properties And Microstructure Evolution Of Ti2alc Under Compression In 25–1100 °C Temperature Range, Rogelio Benitez, W. H. Kan, H. Gao, M. O'Neal, G. Proust, A. Srivastava, Miladin Radovic May 2020

Mechanical Properties And Microstructure Evolution Of Ti2alc Under Compression In 25–1100 °C Temperature Range, Rogelio Benitez, W. H. Kan, H. Gao, M. O'Neal, G. Proust, A. Srivastava, Miladin Radovic

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study investigates the effects of the initial grain size and temperature (ranging from room temperature to 1100 °C) on the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of Ti2AlC MAX phase. A Hall-Petch like relationship is observed between compressive strength and the grain size below brittle-to-plastic transition temperature (BPTT). However, the compressive strength of fine-grained MAX phase decreases more rapidly with increasing temperature resulting in inverse Hall-Petch effect above BPTT. Results from postmortem EBSD analysis reveal complex microstructural evolution in both fine- and coarse-grained microstructures during loading at different temperatures. The pronounced drop in compressive strength for fine-grained microstructures at temperatures …

Hybrid Phase-Change Lattice Boltzmann Simulation Of Vapor Condensation On Vertical Subcooled Walls, Wandong Zhao, Yuan Gao, Ruijie Li, Songgang Qiu, Yin Zhang, Ben Xu

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Saturated vapor condensation on homogenous and heterogeneous subcooled walls is presented in this study by adopting a hybrid phase-change multiple-relaxation-time Lattice Boltzmann model. The effects of wall wettability on the condensation process, including droplets’ growth, coalescence and falling, and the influence of vapor flow to condensation are investigated. The results demonstrate that the heat fluxes around the triple-phase contact lines are higher than that in other cold areas in homogeneous subcooled walls, which actually indicates the fact that filmwise condensation is preventing the continuous condensation process. Furthermore, the dropwise condensation can be formed more easily on the heterogeneous surface with …

On The Spreading Of Non-Canonical Thermals From Direct Numerical Simulations, Kai Liu, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar Feb 2020

On The Spreading Of Non-Canonical Thermals From Direct Numerical Simulations, Kai Liu, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present results from direct numerical simulations on laminar and turbulent non-canonical thermals with an initial rectangular density distribution at a Reynolds number of Re = 500 and Re = 5000, respectively. We find the non-canonical shape to induce strong azimuthal variations in the thermal for both the laminar and turbulent cases. These include noticeable differences in downward and horizontal propagation speeds as well as differences in the strength of the vortex tube. These differences persist over a significant period of time and help generate a cross-flow component that is otherwise not present in canonical cases. The cross-flow component is …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

As proven from field practices in North America and Northwest China, temporary plugging and diverting acid fracturing is an indispensable technology to enhance stimulation effect and hydrocarbon production of complex carbonate reservoirs. It's well-known that the key to the success of this technology lies in creating a temporary plugging within the previously created fractures. Consequently, many scholars have conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the plugging behavior of fibers and particulates. However, the current devices nearly have certain limitations in simulating temporary plugging experiments. Aiming at this problem, this paper introduced the fracture temporary plugging evaluation system with large fracture size, …

The Effect Of Cutting Edge Geometry, Nose Radius And Feed On Surface Integrity In Finish Turning Of Ti-6al4v, Ian S. Brown, Julius M. Schoop

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

While the respective effects of nose radius, feed and cutting edge geometry on surface integrity have each been studied at depth, coupling between these effects is not yet sufficiently understood. Recent studies have clearly established that cutting edge micro-geometries may not only have positive effects on tool-life, but can also be used to tailor surface integrity characteristics, such as surface roughness and near-surface severe plastic deformation. To further a more fundamental understanding of the effects of cutting edge micro-geometries on surface integrity, experimental turning data was generated for a varied range of cutting tool geometries and feeds. Scanning laser interferometry …

Collagen Production And Niche Engineering: A Novel Strategy For Cancer Cells To Survive Acidosis In Dcis And Evolve, Mehdi Damaghi, Hidetoshi Mori, Samantha Byrne, Liping Xu, Tingan Chen, Joseph Johnson, Nathan D. Gallant, Andriy Marusyk, Alexander D. Borowsky, Robert J. Gillies

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Growing tumors are dynamic and nonlinear ecosystems, wherein cancer cells adapt to their local microenvironment, and these adaptations further modify the environment, inducing more changes. From nascent intraductal neoplasms to disseminated metastatic disease, several levels of evolutionary adaptations and selections occur. Here, we focus on one example of such an adaptation mechanism, namely, “niche construction” promoted by adaptation to acidosis, which is a metabolic adaptation to the early harsh environment in intraductal neoplasms. The avascular characteristics of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) make the periluminal volume profoundly acidic, and cancer cells must adapt to this to survive. Based on discovery …

Spontaneous Formation Of Sub-4 Nm Nanocrystalline Alloy Via Polymorphic Phase Transformation, Ying Zhong, Chunqing Wang, Jin Wang, Huiwen Ma, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Vladislav Paley, Zijian Weng, Sungho Jin Jan 2020

Spontaneous Formation Of Sub-4 Nm Nanocrystalline Alloy Via Polymorphic Phase Transformation, Ying Zhong, Chunqing Wang, Jin Wang, Huiwen Ma, Sriram Krishnamoorthy, Vladislav Paley, Zijian Weng, Sungho Jin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A new phase-transformation-induced path to spontaneous formation of extreme nanograin structure is reported. In-situ-heating-mode-microscopy exhibited a substantial grain-growth of Cu6Sn5. During cooling, the grain-growth continued, but it spontaneously switched to grain-refinement mode on phase transformation through ∼180 °C from η-Cu6Sn5 to η’-Cu6Sn5, ending up with an extremely small nanograin size of ∼2.5 nm. The cooling cycling always restores the nanograin size regardless of thermal exposure history, making this to be the first demonstration to stabilize the nanograin with its own spontaneous behavior. The Young’s Modulus was significantly reduced by ∼×3, and the elongation was remarkably increased by …

Machine learning is a promising approach to evaluate human movement based on wearable sensor data. A representative dataset for training data-driven models is crucial to ensure that the model generalizes well to unseen data. However, the acquisition of sufficient data is time-consuming and often infeasible. We present a method to create realistic inertial sensor data with corresponding biomechanical variables by 2D walking and running simulations. We augmented a measured inertial sensor dataset with simulated data for the training of convolutional neural networks to estimate sagittal plane joint angles, joint moments, and ground reaction forces (GRFs) of walking and running. When …

Experimental Study Of Condensation In A Thermoacoustic Cooler With Various 3d Printed Regenerators Using Water Vapor As The Working Fluid, Aibek Bekkulov, Andrew Luthen, Ben Xu

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Thermoacoustics (TA) deals with the conversion of heat into sound and vice versa. The device that transfers energy from a low temperature reservoir to a high temperature one by utilizing acoustic work is called TA cooler (TAC). The main components of a typical TAC are a resonator, a porous regenerator (e.g. stack of parallel plates) and two heat exchangers. The thermoacoustic phenomenon takes place in the regenerator where a nonzero temperature gradient is imposed, and interacts with the sound wave. The low temperature at the cold end of TAC can be used to condense water from the humid air and …

However, the challenge is to obtain a comprehensive analysis from low-quality data and sparse measurements. In this paper, we present a method to estimate gait kinematics and kinetics directly from raw inertial sensor data performing a single dynamic optimization. We formulated an optimal control problem to track accelerometer and gyroscope data with a planar musculoskeletal model. In addition, we minimized muscular effort to ensure a unique solution and to prevent the model from tracking noisy measurements too closely. For evaluation, we recorded data of ten subjects walking …

On The Role Of Sidewalls In The Transition From Straight To Sinuous Bedforms, ‪Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

We present results from direct numerical simulation on the transition from straight-crested to sinuous-crested bedforms. The numerical setup is representative of turbulent open channel flow over an erodible sediment bed at a shear Reynolds number of Reτ = 180. The immersed boundary method accounts for the presence of the bed. The simulations are two-way coupled such that the turbulent flow can erode and modify the bed, and in turn, the bed modifies the overlying flow. Coupling from the flow to the bed occurs through the Exner equation, while back coupling from the bed to the flow is achieved by …
