Three-Dimensional Elastic-Plastic Finite Element Analysis Of Fatique Crack Growth And Closure, Rahmatollah G. Chermahini Jul 1986

Three-Dimensional Elastic-Plastic Finite Element Analysis Of Fatique Crack Growth And Closure, Rahmatollah G. Chermahini

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a three-dimensional, elastic-plastic, finite element analysis to investigate crack extension and closure under cyclic loading. The initial study concentrated on the behavior of a straight through crack in a finite-thickness plate subjected to tensile loading (middle-crack tension specimen). The finite element model was composed of 8-noded (linear-strain) isoparametric elements. In the analysis, the material was assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic. Zienkiewicz's "initial-stress" method, von Mises' yield criterion, and Drucker's normality condition, under small-strain assumptions, were used to account for plasticity. The three-dimensional analysis is capable of extending the crack and changing boundary …

Convective Heat Transfer From Circular Cylinders Located Within Perforated Cylindrical Shrouds, Kamran Daryabeigi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The influence of perforated cylindrical shrouds on the convective heat transfer to circular cylinders in transverse flow has been studied experimentally. Geometries studied were similar to those used in industrial platinum resistance thermometers. The influence of Reynolds number, ventilation factor (ratio of the open area to the total surface area of shroud), radius ratio (ratio of shroud's inside radius to bare cylinder's radius), and shroud orientation with respect to flow were studied.

The experiments showed that perforated shrouds with ventilation factors in the range 0.1 to 0.4 and radius ratios in the range 1.1 to 2.1 could enhance the convective …

A Non-Linear Vortex Panel Method For Wings With Edge Separation, Vijay Kalburgi Apr 1986

A Non-Linear Vortex Panel Method For Wings With Edge Separation, Vijay Kalburgi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A global nodal vortex panel method is developed to predict steady aerodynamic loads on rectangular lifting surfaces with side edge separation. The lifting surface and free shear layers are modeled by bound and free vortex sheets respectively, which are then discretized into triangular bound and free vortex panels respectively. On each triangular panel, a linear distribution of vorticity is defined in terms of the global components of vorticity at its nodes. The velocity field induced by any triangular vortex panel is obtained in closed form. The vortex core of the side edge vortex is modeled by a concentrated core of …

An Investigation Of High Strength To Weight Corrugated Compression Panels With Non-Load Carrying Webs, Charles Thomas Lee Mills Apr 1986

An Investigation Of High Strength To Weight Corrugated Compression Panels With Non-Load Carrying Webs, Charles Thomas Lee Mills

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An investigation of the weight saving potential of corrugated compression panel concepts using curved elements and non-load carrying webs was performed. The concepts investigated were corrugated panels with flat and curved caps with beaded webs. These concepts utilize a beaded web that carries negligible axial load but is very stiff in the transverse direction. Therefore the web substantially stabilizes the load carrying caps to produce a high weight-strength efficient structure.

The optimum geometry parameters were determined using an iterative solution method employing simplified buckling assumptions. The results were checked with a non-linear optimization program coupled to a rigorous buckling analysis. …

Investigation Of Vscous/Inviscid Interaction In Transonic Flow Over Airfoils With Suction, Chadra S. Vemuru Jan 1986

Investigation Of Vscous/Inviscid Interaction In Transonic Flow Over Airfoils With Suction, Chadra S. Vemuru

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The viscous/inviscid interaction over transonic airfoils with and without suction is studied. The streamline angle at the edge of the boundary layer is used to couple the viscous and inviscid flows. The potential flow equations are solved for the inviscid flow field. In the shock region the Euler equations are solved using the method of integral relations. For this the potential flow solution is used as the initial and boundary conditions. An integral method is used to solve the laminar boundary-layer equations. Since both methods are integral methods, a continuous interaction is allowed between the outer inviscid flow region and …

Eigenvalue And Eigenvector Design Sensitivity Analysis For Nonlinear Beam Vibrations, Jian-Zhong Yuan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A beam with immovable ends under large amplitude oscillations is axially subjected to an amplitude-dependent stretching force which is induced by the geometrical nonlinearity. The design sensitivity analysis for such a beam is investigated in this study.

Two variational formulations based on different approximations of nonlinear stretching force are studied firstly. The analytical equations of design sensitivity analysis for these nonlinear eigenproblems are then derived. Finally, a computational scheme using finite element method is developed to calculate the design sensitivity derivatives of the eigenvalue and eigenvector numerically. Numerical examples associated with the nonlinear eigenvalue and eigenvector analysis, as well as …

Analyses Of Quasi-Isotropic Composite Plates Under Quasi-Static Point Loads Simulating Low-Velocity Impact Phenomena, Ajit Dhundiraj Kelkar Jul 1985

Analyses Of Quasi-Isotropic Composite Plates Under Quasi-Static Point Loads Simulating Low-Velocity Impact Phenomena, Ajit Dhundiraj Kelkar

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Composite laminates have high strength to density ratios that make them attractive for use in aircraft structures. However, the damage tolerance of these materials is limited because they have very low ultimate strains, no plastic deformation range, and no usable strength in the thickness direction. These limitations are very obvious when laminates are subjected to impact loads. Due to these impact loads, laminates suffer visible and invisible damage. To improve the material performance in impact requires a better understanding of the deformation and damage mechanics under impact type loads.

In thin composite laminates, the first level of visible damage occurs …

Unsteady Transonic Flow Over Slender Bodies, Cevdet Aydun Apr 1985

Unsteady Transonic Flow Over Slender Bodies, Cevdet Aydun

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The unsteady transonic small disturbance equation for an oscillating slender body is obtained from the full potential equation in cylindrical coordinates by means of a perturbation analysis. The time-dependent body-boundary condition is reduced into a simpler form by matching the outer and inner flows. Also, a time-dependent pressure coefficient over the slender body is derived by means of a matching principle. The simplified form of the body-boundary condition is incorporated into the difference equations at the body axis. This application allows use of the cylindrical coordinate system for the problem. By prescribing several different body-boundary conditions, various modes of body …

Analytic Forms Of Bidirectional Reflectance Functions For Application To Earth Radiation Budget Studies, Natividad Manalo Smith Apr 1985

Analytic Forms Of Bidirectional Reflectance Functions For Application To Earth Radiation Budget Studies, Natividad Manalo Smith

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Reflected solar radiative fluxes emerging from the Earth's top of the atmosphere are inferred from satellite broadband radiance measurements by applying bidirectional reflectance functions (BDRFs) to account for the anisotropy of the radiation field. BDRFs are dependent upon the viewing geometry (i.e. solar zenith angle, view zenith angle, and relative azimuth angle), the amount and type of cloud cover, the condition of the intervening atmosphere, and the reflectance characteristics of the underlying surface. A set of operational Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) BDRFs is available which was developed from the Nimbus 7 ERB (Earth Radiation Budget) scanner data for a …

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This paper presents results of a numerical study of the effect of wall temperature control on the low speed aerodynamic drag of axisymmetric bodies at turbulent Reynolds numbers and zero angle of attack.

Results for both skin-friction and pressure drag were computed for slender bodies using first-order viscous-inviscid interaction theory. Computations using boundary-layer theory were conducted to evaluate the effect of wall heat transfer on bluff-body separation control. Wall heat transfer with 100 percent surface coverage (for all bodies) as well as some partial surface coverage cases were investigated. The wall-to tota1-freestream temperature ratio was varied between 0.08 and 2. …

A two-dimensional, unsteady numerical model for analyzing the characteristics of gas flowing through a gas blown spark gap switch has been developed. The computational model is governed by the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy in an inviscid, non-conducting, perfect, compressible fluid. The governing equations have been solved by using MacCormack's finite volume technique. The effects of rapid gas heating and subsequent changes in the fluid properties of the gas are examined in the high-pressure spark gap switch. The gas temperature, expansion velocity, density and pressure are calculated as functions of time. Air is the dielectric flowing through the …

Combined Forced And Free Convection In The Trombe Wall Channel, Jim Ginchaun Huang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A vertical channel connected by horizontal exit and entrance segments is simulated and represents a flow passage for a Trombe wall solar collector. The two-dimensional combined forced and free convection mode is investigated for the laminar regime. The vertical walls of the channel are maintained at a constant but different temperature while horizontal walls are insulated. A finite difference method using up-wind differencing for the non-linear convective terms and central differencing for the second order derivatives is employed to solve the governing differential equations for mass, momentum, and energy balances. The solution is obtained for stream function, vorticity, and temperature …

Studies On The Interference Of Wings And Propeller Slipstreams, Ramadas K. Prabhu Jul 1984

Studies On The Interference Of Wings And Propeller Slipstreams, Ramadas K. Prabhu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The small disturbance potential flow theory is applied to determine the lift of an airfoil in a nonuniform parallel stream. The given stream is replaced by an equivalent stream with a certain number of velocity discontinuities, and the influence of these discontinuities is obtained by the method of images. Next, this method is extended to the problem of an airfoil in a nonuniform stream of smooth velocity profile. This model allows perturbation velocity potential in a rotational undisturbed stream. A comparison of these results with numerical solutions of Euler equations indicates that, although approximate, the present method provides useful information …

Application Of The Method Of Lines For Solutions Of The Navier-Stokes Equations Using A Nonuniform Grid Distribution, Jamshid Samareh Abolhassani

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The feasibility of the method of lines is investigated for solutions of physical problems requiring nonuniform grid distributions. To attain this, it was also necessary to investigate the stiffness characteristics of the pertinent equations. For specific applications, the governing equations considered are those for viscous, incompressible, two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows. These equations are transform ed from the physical domain having a variable mesh to a computational domain with a uniform mesh. The two governing partial differential equations are the vorticity and stream function equations. The method of lines is used to solve the vorticity equation and the successive over relaxation …

Effect Of Transducer Size On The Statistical Properties Of A Simulated Turbulent Wall Pressure Field, Mehdi R. Khorrami

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The root mean square pressure was calculated with synthetically generated pressure signals for transducers of different size. The transducer diameters were in the range of 0.02 < s*of 12,250. The lower limit of the diameter simulated here was much smaller than diameters reported previously by other workers. Calculated root mean square pressure levels developed in the present work were in good agreement with the measured experimental data.

In order to check the simulated pressure signals, the power spectrum and two point correlation were calculated as well. The power spectra obtained with the smaller transducers were higher in energy level at …

Viscous Modeling And Computation Of Leading-And Trailing-Edge Vortex Cores Of Delta Wings, Balakrishnan Lakshmanan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A Finite-Difference method is presented for calculating steady quasi-axisymmetric flow of an incompressible fluid at large Reynolds number. Approximations of the boundary-layer type are employed to reduce the Navier-Stokes equations to a pair of non-linear parabolic equations. Along with the governing equations, initial conditions are specified at some upstream cross section and boundary conditions are specified at the axis of symmetry and on the outer bounding surface.

The governing equations are replaced by a set of quasilinear finite-difference equations. The solution is obtained by a marching technique, which proceeds step-by-step in the axial direction. At each axial station, an iterative …

On The Space Shuttle Wing Thermal-Structural Analysis, Kumar Krishna Tamma

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A finite element approach for efficient thermal-structural analysis of structures with thermal protection systems (TPS) is described. The approach is applied to Space Shuttle wing structure configurations subjected to reentry heating. New two and three-dimensional finite elements are developed to model heat transfer in the TPS and supporting structure. A typical TPS/Structural element predicts transient nonlinear temperature variations through the TPS thickness and detailed structural temperatures at the TPS/Structure interface. The accuracy of the TPS/Structure approach in two and three-dimensions is evaluated by comparisons with the conventional approach for various configurations of the wing structure. The results indicate that the …

Application Of Least-Squares Method To The Determination Of Orthotropic Elastic And Photoelastic Constants, R. G. Chermahini

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A least-squares technique is developed in matrix form to determine orthotropic elastic and photoelastic constants. Orthotropic elastic constants are determined by mounting strain gages on a half-plane specimen which is subjected to a compressive concentrated force. Strain values corresponding to a 1000 lb load and coordinates of the points where the gages are located are used as input data to the governing equation of orthotropic elasticity for the model under consideration. Orthotropic photoelastic constants are determined using a transparent composite half-plane model which is subjected to a concentrated load. Photoelastic constants are determined using the coordinates of selected point on …
