Aerosol-Assisted Synthesis Of Monodisperse Single-Crystalline Α-Cristobalite Nanospheres, Xingmao Jiang, Lihong Bao, Yung-Sung Cheng, Darren R. Dunphy, Xiaodong Li, C. Jeffrey Brinker Dec 2011

Aerosol-Assisted Synthesis Of Monodisperse Single-Crystalline Α-Cristobalite Nanospheres, Xingmao Jiang, Lihong Bao, Yung-Sung Cheng, Darren R. Dunphy, Xiaodong Li, C. Jeffrey Brinker

Faculty Publications

Monodisperse single-crystalline α-cristobalite nanospheres have been synthesized by hydrocarbon-pyrolysis-induced carbon deposition on amorphous silica aerosol nanoparticles, devitrification of the coated silica at high temperature, and subsequent carbon removal by oxidation. The nanosphere size can be well controlled by tuning the size of the colloidal silica precursor. Uniform, high-purity nanocrystalline α-cristobalite is important for catalysis, nanocomposites, advanced polishing, and understanding silica nanotoxicology.

One-Step Infiltration Of Mixed Conducting Electrocatalysts For Reducing Cathode Polarization Of A Commercial Cathode-Supported Sofc, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Xuan Zhao, Hailei Zhao, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

Infiltrating fine-grained electrocatalyst particles of either ion conducting or mixed electron and ion conducting (MEIC) material into a ceramic porous electrode scaffold has proven a very effective way to improve electrode performance for low to intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). We report here one-step infiltration of MEIC fine particles, La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSCo) and SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (SCF), into a commercial cathode substrate. A comparative study shows that the cathode polarization can be considerably reduced by a factor of 17 to 28 and 28 to 49 from 1000 to 700 ³C by …

A Novel Solid Oxide Redox Flow Battery For Grid Energy Storage, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Xuan Zhao, John B. Goodenough, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

In this work we report proof-of-concept of a novel redox flow battery consisting of a solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOEC) integrated with a redox-cycle unit. The charge/discharge characteristics were explicitly observed by operating between fuel cell and electrolysis modes of the SOEC along with “in-battery” generation and storage of H2 realized by an in situ closed-loop reversible steam-metal reaction in the redox-cycle unit. With Fe/FeO as the redox materials, the new storage battery can produce an energy capacity of 348 Wh/kg-Fe and round-trip efficiency of 91.5% over twenty stable charge/discharge cycles. This excellent performance combined with robustness, environmental friendliness …

Synthesis, Structural, Optical And Mechanical Characterization Of Srb2O4 Nanorods, Rui Li, Lihong Bao, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Single crystalline strontium borate (SrB2O4) nanorods were synthesized for the first time via a facile sol–gel route at low temperature. The SrB2O4 nanorods have a good crystalline nature with the growth direction along the [511] orientation and they are transparent from the ultraviolet to the visible regimes. Nanoscale three-point bending tests were performed directly on individual nanorods to probe their mechanical properties using an atomic force microscope. The elastic modulus of SrB2O4 nanorods was measured to be 158.2 ± 2.8 GPa, exhibiting a significant increase compared with other borate nanostructures …

Utilizing An Improved Rotorcraft Dynamic Model In State Estimation, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman, John Macdonald, Jeffrey L. Ferrin, Stephen C. Quebe

Faculty Publications

Multirotor aircraft have become a popular platform for indoor flight. To navigate these vehicles indoors through an unknown environment requires the use of a SLAM algorithm, which can be processing intensive. However, their size, weight, and power capacity limit the processing capabilities available onboard. In this paper, we describe an approach to state estimation that helps to alleviate this problem. By using an improved dynamic model we show how to more accurately estimate the aircraft states than can be done with the traditional approach of integrating IMU measurements. The estimation is done with relatively infrequent corrections from accelerometers (40Hz) and …

Differential Flatness Based Control Of A Rotorcraft For Aggressive Maneuvers, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman, Jeffrey L. Ferrin Sep 2011

Differential Flatness Based Control Of A Rotorcraft For Aggressive Maneuvers, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Robert C. Leishman, Jeffrey L. Ferrin

Faculty Publications

We propose a new method to control a multi-rotor aerial vehicle. We show that the system dynamics are differentially flat. We utilize the differential flatness of the system to provide a feed forward input. The system model derived allows for arbitrary changes in yaw and is not limited to small roll and pitch angles. We demonstrate in hardware the ability to follow a highly maneuverable path while tracking a time-varying heading command.

In Situ Synthesis Of Ultrafine Ss-Mno2/Polypyrrole Nanorod Composites For High-Performance Supercapacitors, Jianfeng Zang, Xiaodong Li Aug 2011

In Situ Synthesis Of Ultrafine Ss-Mno2/Polypyrrole Nanorod Composites For High-Performance Supercapacitors, Jianfeng Zang, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

We report a remarkable observation that is at odds with the established notion that β-MnO2 was regarded as an undesirable candidate for supercapacitor applications. The specific capacitance of β-MnO2 can reach as high as 294 F g−1, which is comparable to the best crystallographic structure, like α-MnO2. The key is to substantially decrease the size of β-MnO2 powders to ultra small regime. We demonstrate a facile, simple, and effective approach to synthesizing ultrafine (<10 nm in diameter) β-MnO2/polypyrrole nanorod composite powders for high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. Our observation may encourage a revisit of the other good …

Characteristics Of The Hydrogen Electrode In High Temperature Steam Electrolysis Process, Chao Jin, Chenghao Yang, Fanglin Chen Aug 2011

Characteristics Of The Hydrogen Electrode In High Temperature Steam Electrolysis Process, Chao Jin, Chenghao Yang, Fanglin Chen

Faculty Publications

YSZ-electrolyte supported solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs) using LSM-YSZ oxygen electrode but with three types of hydrogen electrode, Ni–SDC, Ni–YSZ and LSCM–YSZ have been fabricated and characterized under different steam contents in the feeding gas at 850°C. Electrochemical impedance spectra results show that cell resistances increase with the increase in steam concentrations under both open circuit voltage and electrolysis conditions, suggesting that electrolysis reaction becomes more difficult in high steam content. Pt reference electrode was applied to evaluate the contributions of the hydrogen electrode and oxygen electrode in the electrolysis process. Electrochemical impedance spectra and over potential of both electrodes …

The use of natural nanoporous bamboo as both the renewable carbon source and the template for the formation of catalyst particles greatly simplifies the synthesis process. Based on the structural, morphological and elemental analysis, volatileoxides or halides assisted …

Compressibility Effects Of Extended Formation Flight, Andrew Ning, Ilan Kroo Jun 2011

Compressibility Effects Of Extended Formation Flight, Andrew Ning, Ilan Kroo

Faculty Publications

Aircraft flown in formations may realize significant reductions in induced drag by flying in regions of wake upwash. However, most transports fly at transonic speeds and compressibility effects in formation flight are not well understood. This study uses an Euler solver to analyze the inviscid aerodynamic forces and moments of transonic wing/body configurations flying in a 2-aircraft formation. We consider formations with large streamwise separation distances (10-50 wingspans) in an arrangement we term extended formation flight. Compressibility-related drag penalties in formation flight may be eliminated by slowing 2-3% below the nominal out-of-formation drag divergence Mach number, at fixed lift coefficient …

Dynamics Of A Partially Fluid-Filled Sphere, Jeff Hendricks, Taylor W. Killian, Robert A. Klaus, Nick Smith, Tadd T. Truscott May 2011

Dynamics Of A Partially Fluid-Filled Sphere, Jeff Hendricks, Taylor W. Killian, Robert A. Klaus, Nick Smith, Tadd T. Truscott

Faculty Publications

We introduce a study on the slosh dynamics of a partially filled elastic sphere. Currently the physical design of fluid-filled containers utilizes clever construction and machinery to mitigate sloshing motions. There are numerous cases that have been observed but we focus on the impact of a sphere under free fall with an initially undisturbed free surface. The study focuses on measurement and simulation of the force distribution between the fluid and the sphere through the use of high-speed imaging and finite element analysis. Using the cavity shape data, a potential flow numerical model is developed that predicts the unsteady forces. …

Aerodynamic Performance Of Extended Formation Flight, Andrew Ning, Tristan Flanzer, Ilan Kroo May 2011

Aerodynamic Performance Of Extended Formation Flight, Andrew Ning, Tristan Flanzer, Ilan Kroo

Faculty Publications

Close formation flight is of limited practicality for commercial aviation. Our concept of extended formation flight takes advantage of the persistence of cruise wakes by extending the streamwise spacing between aircraft in a formation. This allows the aircraft to fly at safe separation distances from each other, while still benefiting from the upwash of the upstream wake(s). In this paper we are interested in estimating the performance of these extended formations, and estimating some of the effects that limit the longitudinal extent of the formation. We consider the effects of wake rollup, vortex decay, vortex instabilities, vortex motion, and atmospheric …

Faculty Publications

The performance of Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6 (SFMO) as a cathode material has been investigated in this study. The oxygen ionic conductivityof SFMO reaches 0.13 S cm-1 at 800°C in air. The chemical diffusion coefficient (Dchem) and surface exchange constant (kex) of SFMO at 750°C are 5.0 x 10-6 cm2 s-1 and 2.8 x 10-5 cm s-1, respectively, suggesting that SFMO may have good electrochemicalactivity for oxygen reduction. SFMO shows a thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of 14.5 x 10-6 K-1 the …

A 3-D Chain Algorithm With Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model Elements, Robert Parley Chase, Robert H. Todd, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby Jan 2011

A 3-D Chain Algorithm With Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model Elements, Robert Parley Chase, Robert H. Todd, Larry L. Howell, Spencer P. Magleby

Faculty Publications

A chain algorithm element is created from pseudo-rigid-body segments and used in a chain calculation that accurately predicts the force deflection relationship of beams with large 3-D deflections. Each chain element is made up of three pseudo-rigid-body models superimposed on each other acting orthogonally in relation to each other. The chain algorithm can predict large displacements and the force-deflection relationship of lateral torsional buckled beams significantly faster than the finite element method. This approach is not intended to compete with finite element analysis, but rather is a supplement tool that may prove particularly useful in the early phases of design …

Optical Cell For Combinatorial In Situ Raman Spectroscopic Measurements Of Hydrogen Storage Materials At High Pressures And Temperatures, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Wilbur S. Hurst, Sesha S. Srinivasan, James E. Maslar Jan 2011

Optical Cell For Combinatorial In Situ Raman Spectroscopic Measurements Of Hydrogen Storage Materials At High Pressures And Temperatures, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Wilbur S. Hurst, Sesha S. Srinivasan, James E. Maslar

Faculty Publications

An optical cell is described for high-throughput backscattering Raman spectroscopic measurements of hydrogen storagematerials at pressures up to 10 MPa and temperatures up to 823 K. High throughput is obtained by employing a 60 mm diameter × 9 mm thick sapphire window, with a corresponding 50 mm diameter unobstructed optical aperture. To reproducibly seal this relatively large window to the cell body at elevated temperatures and pressures, a gold o-ring is employed. The sample holder-to-window distance is adjustable, making this cell design compatible with optical measurement systems incorporating lenses of significantly different focal lengths, e.g., microscope objectives and single element …

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler Jan 2011

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler

Faculty Publications

Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.

Self Assembly In Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities And Obstacles, Nathan B. Crane, J. Tuckerman, G. N. Nielson Jan 2011

Self Assembly In Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities And Obstacles, Nathan B. Crane, J. Tuckerman, G. N. Nielson

Faculty Publications

Purpose

Additive manufacturing offers substantial flexibility in shape, but much less flexibility in materials and functionality—particularly at small size scales. A system for automatically incorporating microscale components would enable the fabrication of objects with more functionality. This paper considers the potential of self assembly to serve as an automated programmable integration method. In particular, it addresses the ability of random self assembly processes to successfully assemble objects with high performance despite the possibility of assembly errors.

Methodology

A self-assembled thermoelectric system is taken as a sample system. The performance expectations for these systems are then predicted using modified one-dimensional models …

Dynamic Simulation Of A High Pressure Regulator, A. Shahani, H. Esmaili, Ashkan Aryaei, S. Mohammadi, M. Najar

Faculty Publications

In this paper, the dynamic simulation for a high pressure regulator is performed to obtain the regulator behavior. To analyze the regulator performance, the equation of motion for inner parts, the continuity equation for diverse chambers and the equation for mass flow rate were derived. Because of nonlinearity and coupling, these equations are solved using numerical methods and the results are presented. Additionally, the dynamic analysis results consist of the output pressure change versus time, the displacement of the moving parts versus time, the regulator mass flow rate versus time and the output pressure versus mass flow rate in different …

Effective Ionic Conductivity Of A Novel Intermediate-Temperature Mixed Oxide-Ion And Carbonate-Ion Conductor, Xue Li, Guoliang Xiao, Kevin Huang Dec 2010

Effective Ionic Conductivity Of A Novel Intermediate-Temperature Mixed Oxide-Ion And Carbonate-Ion Conductor, Xue Li, Guoliang Xiao, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

A systematic investigation on the effective ionic conductivity (σm) of a novel intermediate-temperature mixed oxide-ion and carbonate-ion conductor MOCC consisting of a ceria phase and a carbonate phase is reported. The study explicitly shows that the observed remarkable temperature-dependent σm is primarily the result of softening/melting of the carbonate phase as the physical state of the carbonate phase transforms from solid, softened to molten. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis complements the understanding of the observed electrical behavior by revealing temperatures of melting and solidification in agreement with the onset temperatures of σm. In addition, the …

Moving Ground Target Tracking In Urban Terrain Using Air/Ground Vehicles, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Mark Owen, Huili Yu Dec 2010

Moving Ground Target Tracking In Urban Terrain Using Air/Ground Vehicles, Timothy Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Mark Owen, Huili Yu

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present a framework for tracking a moving target in urban environments using UAVs in cooperation with UGVs. The framework takes into account occlusions between the sensor and the target. The target state is modeled using the dynamic occupancy grid and the target motion model is built using a second-order Markov chain. Based on the target occupancy grid, we design the path planning algorithm to maneuver the UAV and the UGV to configurations where they can detect the target with high probability. Simulation results show the framework is successful in solving the target tracking problem in urban …

Optimization Design Of Electrodes For Anode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Via Genetic Algorithm, Junxiang Shi, Xingjian Xue Dec 2010

Optimization Design Of Electrodes For Anode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Via Genetic Algorithm, Junxiang Shi, Xingjian Xue

Faculty Publications

Porous electrode is the critical component of solid-oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and provides a functional material backbone for multi-physicochemical processes. Model based electrode designs could significantly improve SOFC performance. This task is usually performed via parameter studies for simple case and assumed property distributions for graded electrodes. When nonlinearly coupled multiparameters of electrodes are considered, it could be very difficult for the model based parameter study method to effectively and systematically search the design space. In this research, the optimization approach with a genetic algorithm is demonstrated for this purpose. An anode-supported proton conducting SOFC integrated with a fuel supply …

Geometry-Dependent Oxygen Diffusion Flux And Limiting Current Density Of The Cathode In A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, James L. Shull Dec 2010

Geometry-Dependent Oxygen Diffusion Flux And Limiting Current Density Of The Cathode In A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, James L. Shull

Faculty Publications

An analysis is performed on the diffusion of oxygen through tubular porous cathode substrates having several different geometries. It is shown that the flux of oxygen as it diffuses through these different substrate geometries can be explicitly expressed by a general analytical form with a unique geometric factor for each type of substrate geometry. Experimental measurements of the geometry-independent term, oxygen diffusivity, were conducted for two representative geometries: cylindrical and triangular tubes. These measurements show good agreement between samples with similar porosities and thus favorably support the oxygen flux equations presented. Formulations for the limiting current density were also derived …

Cathode Polarizations Of A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Alessandro Zampieri, Martin Ise Aug 2010

Cathode Polarizations Of A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Alessandro Zampieri, Martin Ise

Faculty Publications

The concentration, activation, and total polarizations of the cathode in a cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) were theoretically and experimentally investigated. In the theoretical analysis, the exchange current density of the charge transfer was considered to be dependent on the PO2 determined by the preceding O2 diffusion, resulting in an interrelationship between activation and concentration polarizations. The established nonlinear polarization equations were then applied to solve the key parameters with area specific resistances and overpotentials of the polarizations experimentally measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on an operating cathode-supported SOFC. To ensure the consistency and meaningfulness of …

Energy Harvesting And Mission Effectiveness For Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Mark J. Cutler, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Brian Capozzi Aug 2010

Energy Harvesting And Mission Effectiveness For Small Unmanned Air Vehicles, Mark J. Cutler, Timothy W. Mclain, Randal W. Beard, Brian Capozzi

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the feasibility of improving unmanned air vehicle (UAV) mission effectiveness by extracting energy from the atmosphere. Specifically, we consider an aerial surveillance mission in the vicinity of a geographic ridge. Cross winds owing over the ridge produce regions of lift on the windward side that can be exploited to increase mission duration. Mission effectiveness is quantified using the seeability metric. Simulation results are presented for several observation target placements. Results indicate that seeability and imaging persistence can be improved by exploiting ridge lift. Simulations demonstrated that targets at ranges less than four times the ridge height were …

Multidisciplinary Considerations In The Design Of Wings And Wing Tip Devices, Andrew Ning, Ilan Kroo Mar 2010

Multidisciplinary Considerations In The Design Of Wings And Wing Tip Devices, Andrew Ning, Ilan Kroo

Faculty Publications

Conceptual wing design analysis methods are combined with numerical optimization to find minimum drag wings subject to constraints on lift, weight, pitching moment, and stall speed. Tip extensions and winglets designed for minimum drag achieve similar performance, with the optimal solution depending on the ratio of the maneuver lift coecient to the cruise lift coecient. The results highlight the importance of accounting for the depth of the wing structural box in the weight model, and including constraints on stall speed. For tailless aircraft, C-wings show a slight performance advantage over wings with winglets when longitudinal trim and stability constraints are …

Bidirectional Electrowetting Actuation With Voltage Polarity Dependence, Nathan B. Crane, Alex A. Volinsky, Pradeep Mishra, Ajay Rajgadkar, Mehdi Khodayari Mar 2010

Bidirectional Electrowetting Actuation With Voltage Polarity Dependence, Nathan B. Crane, Alex A. Volinsky, Pradeep Mishra, Ajay Rajgadkar, Mehdi Khodayari

Faculty Publications

This work presents an electrowetting system in which the actuation direction depends on the polarity of the applied voltage. Since electrowetting response depends on the voltage squared, it is typically independent of voltage sign to first order. However, the introduction of an electrochemicaal diode into the equivalent electrical circuit permits polarity-dependent behavior. Electrochemical diodes were created by making holes in the dielectric. The aluminum electrodes passivate and prevent current flow in one direction, creating diode-like behavior with high breakdown voltage. The resulting actuation forces were directly measured and are of comparable magnitude for both actuation directions.

Note: Thermal Analog To Atomic Force Microscopy Force-Displacement Measurements For Nanoscale Interfacial Contact Resistance, Brian D. Iverson, John E. Blendell, Suresh V. Garimella Mar 2010

Note: Thermal Analog To Atomic Force Microscopy Force-Displacement Measurements For Nanoscale Interfacial Contact Resistance, Brian D. Iverson, John E. Blendell, Suresh V. Garimella

Faculty Publications

Thermal diffusion measurements on polymethylmethacrylate-coated Si substrates using heated atomic force microscopy tips were performed to determine the contact resistance between an organic thin film and Si. The measurement methodology presented demonstrates how the thermal contrast signal obtained during a force-displacement ramp is used to quantify the resistance to heat transfer through an internal interface. The results also delineate the interrogation thickness beyond which thermal diffusion in the organic thin film is not affected appreciably by the underlying substrate.

Adhesion At Diamond /Metal Interfaces: A Density Functional Theory Study, Haibo Guo, Yue Qi, Xiaodong Li Feb 2010

Adhesion At Diamond /Metal Interfaces: A Density Functional Theory Study, Haibo Guo, Yue Qi, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

To understand the basic material properties required in selecting a metallic interlayer for enhanced adhesion of diamondcoatings on the substrates, the interfaces between diamond and metals with different carbide formation enthalpies (Cu, Ti, and Al) are studied using density functional theory. It is found that the work of separation decreases, while the interface energy increases, with the carbide formation enthalpy ΔHf (Tiys (Ti>Cu>Al), is needed to achieve a higher overall interface strength. In addition, when the surface energy is larger than the interface energy, a wetted diamond/metal interface is formed during diamondnucleation, providing the strongest adhesion …

Characterization Of Electrowetting Processes Through Force Measurements, Nathan B. Crane, Pradeep Mishra, Alex A. Volinsky Jan 2010

Characterization Of Electrowetting Processes Through Force Measurements, Nathan B. Crane, Pradeep Mishra, Alex A. Volinsky

Faculty Publications

A new method of characterizing electrowetting is presented in which the forces applied to a modified nanoindenter tip by a test water droplet are measured. A droplet is trapped between the flat nanoindenter tip and the test substrate containing the necessary electrodes. When voltage is applied to the electrodes in the substrate, lateral and normal forces are exerted on the tip and measured by the nanoindenter transducer. Proper selection of the tip geometry permits direct prediction of the resulting in-plane lateral forces using analytical formulas derived from the Young-Lippmann equation. Experimental results show good agreement with both analytical and numerical …
