This work applies the Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (2nd-ASAM) to compute the mixed 2nd-order sensitivities of a polyethylene-reflected plutonium (PERP) benchmark's leakage response with respect to the benchmark's imprecisely known isotopic number densities and the other benchmark imprecisely known parameters, including: (i) the 6 × 180 mixed 2nd-order sensitivities involving the total microscopic cross sections; (ii) the 6 × 21,600 mixed 2nd-order sensitivities involving the scattering microscopic cross sections; (iii) the 6 × 60 mixed 2nd-order sensitivities involving the fission microscopic cross sections; and (iv) the 6 × 60 mixed 2nd-order sensitivities involving the average number of neutrons produced …
Impact Of Part Thickness And Drying Conditions On Saturation Limits In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Nathan B. Crane
Impact Of Part Thickness And Drying Conditions On Saturation Limits In Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing, Nathan B. Crane
Faculty Publications
Binder jetting (BJ) is a high build-rate additive manufacturing process with growing commercial interest. Growth in BJ applications is driven by the use of finer powders and improved post-processing methods that can produce dense, homogenous final parts. However, understanding of the basic droplet/powder interaction is relatively limited. This paper considers the impact of in-process drying, part geometry, and droplet size on a key printing parameter: binder saturation. Parts of varying thicknesses are printed with a range of saturation levels under various heating conditions. The ratio of the printed part mass to the theoretical part mass is used to detect bleeding. …

: This work applies the Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (2nd-ASAM) to compute the 1st-order and unmixed 2nd-order sensitivities of a polyethylene-reflected plutonium (PERP) benchmark’s leakage response with respect to the benchmark’s imprecisely known isotopic number densities. The numerical results obtained for these sensitivities indicate that the 1st-order relative sensitivity to the isotopic number densities for the two fissionable isotopes have large values, which are comparable to, or larger than, the corresponding sensitivities for the total cross sections. Furthermore, several 2nd-order unmixed sensitivities for the isotopic number densities are significantly larger than the corresponding 1st-order ones. This work also presents …

By applying the Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (2nd-ASAM) to the polyethylene-reflected plutonium (PERP) benchmark, this work presents results for the first- and second-order sensitivities of this benchmark’s leakage response with respect to the spontaneous fission source parameters. The numerical results obtained for these sensitivities indicate that the 1st-order relative sensitivity of the leakage response to the source parameters for the two fissionable isotopes in the benchmark are all positive, signifying that an increase in the source parameters will cause an increase in the total neutron leakage from the PERP sphere. The 1st- and 2nd-order relative sensitivities with respect to …

Porous Silica Nanotube Thin Films As Thermally Insulating Barrier Coatings, Derric B. Syme, Jason M. Lund, Brian D. Jensen, Robert C. Davis, Richard R. Vanfleet, Brian D. Iverson
Faculty Publications
The fabrication and examination of a porous silica thin film, potentially for use as an insulating thin film, were investigated. A vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forest, created by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), was used as scaffolding to construct the porous film. Silicon was deposited on the CNT forest using low-pressure CVD (LPCVD) and then oxidized to remove the CNTs and convert the silicon to silica for electrical or thermal passivation (e.g., thermal barrier). Thermal conductivity was determined using a 1D heat-transfer analysis that equated radiative heat loss in a vacuum with conduction through the substrate and thin film stack. …
Multi-Mode Guided Wave Detection Of Various Composite Damage Types, Hanfei Mei, Robin James, Victor Giurgiutiu
Multi-Mode Guided Wave Detection Of Various Composite Damage Types, Hanfei Mei, Robin James, Victor Giurgiutiu
Faculty Publications
This paper presents a new methodology for detecting various types of composite damage, such as delamination and impact damage, through the application of multimode guided waves. The basic idea is that various wave modes have different interactions with various types of composite damage. Using this method, selective excitations of pure-mode guided waves were achieved using adjustable angle beam transducers (ABTs). The tuning angles of various wave modes were calculated using Snell’s law applied to the theoretical dispersion curves of composite plates. Pitch–catch experiments were conducted on a 2-mm quasi-isotropic carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plate to validate the excitations of …

Towards Overcoming The Curse Of Dimensionality In Predictive Modelling And Uncertainty Quantification, Dan Gabriel Cacuci
Faculty Publications
This invited presentation summarizes new methodologies developed by the author for performing high-order sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification and predictive modeling. The presentation commences by summarizing the newly developed 3rd-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (3rd-ASAM) for linear systems, which overcomes the “curse of dimensionality” for sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification of a large variety of model responses of interest in reactor physics systems. The use of the exact expressions of the 2nd-, and 3rd-order sensitivities computed using the 3rd-ASAM is subsequently illustrated by presenting 3rd-order formulas for the first three cumulants of the response distribution, for quantifying response uncertainties (covariance, skewness) …

This invited keynote presentation compares the relative importance of 1st-order versus 2nd-order sensitivities of the leakage response of an OECD/NEA benchmark (polyethylene-reflected plutonium sphere) to the nuclear data characterizing this benchmark. The imprecisely known parameters underlying the neutron transport computational model for this benchmark include 180 group-averaged total microscopic cross sections, 21600 group-averaged scattering microscopic cross sections, 60 parameters describing the fission process, 30 parameters describing the fission spectrum, 10 parameters describing the system's sources, and 6 isotopic number densities. Thus, this benchmark comprises 21886 1st-order sensitivities of the leakage response with respect to the model parameters, and 478,996,996 2nd-order …

Purpose: A supply chain consists of raw material suppliers, manufacturers and retailers where inventory of raw materials and finished goods are involved, respectively. Therefore, it is important to find optimal solutions, which are beneficial for both supplier, manufacturer and retailer.
Design/methodology/approach: This research focuses on a semi-continuous manufacturing facility by assuming that the production of succeeding cycle starts immediately after the production of preceding cycle. In reality, the inventory of a supply chain system may not be completely empty. A number of products may be left over after the deliveries are made. These leftover inventories are added to the next …

Binder Jetting (BJ) is a low-cost Additive Manufacturing (AM) process that uses inkjet technology to selectively bind particles in a powder bed. BJ relies on the ability to control, not only the placement of binder on the surface but also its imbibition into the powder bed. This is a complex process in which picoliter-sized droplets impact powder beds at velocities of 1-10 m/s. However, the effects of printing parameters such as droplet velocity, size, spacing, and inter-arrival time on saturation level (fraction of pore space filled with binder) and line formation (merging of droplets to form a line) are unknown. …
Efficient Incorporation Of Fatigue Damage Constraints In Wind Turbine Blade Optimization, Bryce Ingersoll, Andrew Ning
Efficient Incorporation Of Fatigue Damage Constraints In Wind Turbine Blade Optimization, Bryce Ingersoll, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
Wind turbine design is a challenging multidisciplinary optimization problem, where the aerodynamic shapes, structural member sizing, and material composition must all be determined and optimized. Some previous blade design methods incorporate static loading with an added safety factor to account for dynamic effects. Others incorporate dynamic loading, but in general limit the evaluation to a few design cases. By not fully incorporating the dynamic loading of the wind turbine, the final turbine blade design is either too conservative by overemphasizing the dynamic effects or infeasible by failing to adequately account for these effects. We propose an iterative method that estimates …

This work presents the Third-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (3rd-ASAM) for response-coupled forward and adjoint linear systems. The 3rd-ASAM enables the efficient computation of the exact expressions of the 3rd-order functional derivatives (“sensitivities”) of a general system response, which depends on both the forward and adjoint state functions, with respect to all of the parameters underlying the respective forward and adjoint systems. Such responses are often encountered when representing mathematically detector responses and reaction rates in reactor physics problems. The 3rd-ASAM extends the 2nd-ASAM in the quest to overcome the “curse of dimensionality” in sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification and predictive …

The subcritical polyethylene-reflected plutonium (PERP) metal fundamental physics benchmark, which is included in the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook, has been selected to serve as a paradigm illustrative reactor physics system for the application of the Second-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (2nd-ASAM) that was developed by Cacuci. The 2nd-ASAM enables the exhaustive deterministic computation of the exact values of the 1st-order and 2nd-order sensitivities of a system response to the parameters underlying the respective system. The PERP benchmark is numerically modeled in this work by using the deterministic multigroup neutron transport equation discretized …

The numerical results obtained for the 21,600 first-order relative sensitivities indicate that the majority of these were small, the largest having relative values of O (10(-2)). Furthermore, the vast majority of the (21600)(2) second-order …

First Principles Investigation Of Anomalous Pressure-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Chalcopyrites, Loay Flalfy, Denis Music, Ming Hu
Faculty Publications
The effect of compression on the thermal conductivity of CuGaS2, CuInS2, CuInTe2, and AgInTe2 chalcopyrites (space group I-42d) was studied at 300 K using phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) calculations. The thermal conductivity was evaluated by solving the BTE with harmonic and third-order interatomic force constants. The thermal conductivity of CuGaS2 increases with pressure, which is a common behavior. Striking differences occur for the other three compounds. CuInTe2 and AgInTe2 exhibit a drop in the thermal conductivity upon increasing pressure, which is anomalous. AgInTe2 reaches a very low thermal conductivity of 0.2 W·m−1 ·K −1 at 2.6 GPa, being beneficial …

Solid Li-ion conducting electrolytes are highly sought for all solid-state Li-batteries, which are considered the next-generation safe batteries. Here a systematic computational study on the intrinsic transport properties of lithium gallium oxysulfide, LiGaOS (S. G. Pmc21), as a potential solid-state Li-ion electrolyte have been reported. The phonon dispersion spectrum analysis indicates that LiGaOS crystal structure is dynamically stable. The energy band structure and density of states calculations suggest that LiGaOS is an insulator with a wide indirect band gap of ∼5.44 eV. The CI-NEB calculations reveal that the “kick-off” collective migration via Li-interstitials is the dominant conduction mechanism …

Wind Farm Layout Optimization With Loads Considerations, Andrew P. J. Stanley, Jennifer King, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
The objective of this paper is to improve the annual energy production of a wind farm by optimizing the layout of a wind farm, while considering fatigue loads on turbines. In this paper, the loads are estimated using the edgewise bending moment computed using CCBlade, a steady-state blade element momentum code. The edgewise bending moment is then used to calculate fatigue damage using Miner’s rule. The fatigue damage is used to constrain the layout optimization problem. We show that our method can predict blade root damage with similar trends to damage calculated with other methods, such as a complex, computationally …

Adhesion Testing Of Printed Inks While Varying The Surface Treatment Of Polymer Substrates, Clayton Neff, Edwin Elston, Amanda Schrand, Nathan B. Crane
Faculty Publications
Additive manufacturing with conductive materials enables new approaches to printed electronics that are unachievable by standard electronics manufacturing processes. In particular, electronics can be embedded directly into structural components in nearly arbitrary 3D space. While these methods incorporate many of the same materials, the new processing methods require standard test methods to compare materials, processing conditions, and determine design limits. This work demonstrates a test method to quantitatively measure the adhesion failure of printed inks deposited on a substrate without changing the ink printing conditions. The proposed method is an adaption of single lap shear testing in which the lap …

In this work, two AM technologies were utilized to compare the effectiveness of fabricating a simple electronic device with a conductive trace and hollow cylinder representative of ‘printed packaging’ that would survive harsh environmental conditions. The printed packaging cylinder delineates printed potting for electronics packaging. An nScrypt direct write (DW) system was the primary manufacturing system but a developing technology—coined large area projection sintering (LAPS)—manufactured a subset of samples for comparison. The tests follow Military Standard (MIL STD) 883K and include resiliency evaluation for die shear strength, temperature cycling, thermal shock, and high G loading by mechanical shock. Results indicate …

Faculty Publications
Using first-principles calculations, we studied the adsorption of alkali ions in pure silica Linde Type A (LTA) zeolite. The probability of adsorbing alkali ions from solution and the driving force for ion exchange between Na+ and other alkali ions at the different adsorption sites were analyzed. From the calculated ion exchange isotherms, we show that it is possible to exchange Na+ with K+ and Rb+ in water, but that is not the case for systems in a vacuum. We also demonstrate that a solvation model should be used for the accurate representation of ion exchange in an LTA and that …

Relative Navigation Of Fixed-Wing Aircraft In Gps-Denied Environments, Gary J. Ellingson, Kevin M. Brink, Timothy Mclain
Faculty Publications
The future impact of small unmanned aircraft will depend in part on how well they can navigate in GPS-denied and GPS-degraded environments. While several GPS-denied navigation methods have been introduced, small fixed-wing aircraft have, for the most part, been neglected. This paper introduces a method to enable GPS-denied fixed-wing flight while accounting for fixed-wing-specific sensing requirements. This work uses a methodology called relative navigation as an overarching framework. The development of an odometry-like, front-end, EKF-based estimator that utilizes only a monocular camera and an inertial measurement unit is presented. The filter uses the measurement model of the multi-state-constraint Kalman filter. …

Many important processes, from manufacture of integrated circuit boards, to an insect’s ability to walk on water, depend on the wetting of liquids on surfaces. Wetting is commonly controlled through material selection, coatings, and/or surface texture. However, wetting is sensitive to environmental conditions. In particular, some hydrophobic fluoropolymer coatings are sensitive to extended water exposure as evidenced by a declining contact angle and increasing contact angle hysteresis. Understanding “degradation” of these coatings is critical to applications that employ them. The durability of a series of fluoropolymer coatings were tested by measuring the contact angle before, during, and after extended submersion …

Simulated Tremor Propagation In The Upper Limb: From Muscle Activity To Joint Displacement, Thomas Corie, Steven Knight Charles
Faculty Publications
Although tremor is the most common movement disorder, there are few non-invasive treatment options. Creating effective tremor suppression devices requires a knowledge of where tremor originates mechanically (which muscles) and how it propagates through the limb (to which degrees of freedom, DOF).
To simulate tremor propagation, we created a simple model of the upper limb, with tremorogenic activity in the 15 major superficial muscles as inputs and tremulous joint displacement in the 7 major DOF as outputs. The model approximated the muscle excitation-contraction dynamics, musculoskeletal geometry, and mechanical impedance of the limb.
From our simulations, we determined fundamental principles for …

The Roussopoulos And Schwinger Functionals For Nuclear Systems Involving Imprecisely Known Fluxes And Parameters: Distinctions And Equivalences, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

For over 60 years, the Roussopoulos and Schwinger functionals have been used in many works and textbooks under the assumption that they provide “second-order accurate” trial functions for the forward and adjoint fluxes when computing reaction rates and/or particle detector responses in source-driven nuclear systems. The Schwinger functional has been employed as a particularly useful form of the Roussopoulos functional for systems in which the forward and adjoint particle fluxes were normalized. When using these functionals, however, the expressions for the approximate fluxes were postulated arbitrarily while the system parameters were unrealistically assumed to be perfectly well known. This work …
