A Coupled Source Panel, Actuator Line, And Viscous Vortex Particle Method In An O(N) Scheme, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Ning Jan 2023

A Coupled Source Panel, Actuator Line, And Viscous Vortex Particle Method In An O(N) Scheme, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Wake interactions play a significant role in aerodynamics. However, common modeling approaches are either expensive or lack fidelity, making them unreliable or difficult to use in the design process. The vortex particle method can capture the relevant physics effectively, but imposing boundary conditions with solid surfaces in a computationally efficient way is challenging. We explore two possible methods of imposing solid surface boundary conditions of vortex particle simulations. The first, a novel variation on a pure particle approach, is easy to implement but is moderately expensive, and suffers from some numerical instability. The second, source panels accelerated with a fast …

Triangular Fin Array Passively Actuated By Bimetallic Coils For Cubesat Thermal Control, Josh Cannon, Rydge B. Mulford, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

CubeSat thermal control can be especially demanding due to volume and size constraints, high power dissipation per unit surface area, and highly variable internal and external heat loads. As such, CubeSat developers must rely on thermal control systems that meet the specific requirements of their mission and environmental conditions. Deployable radiators enable satellites to increase their radiative surface area and to reveal highly emissive surfaces during times when increased heat rejection is desired. In colder conditions, when decreased heat loss is preferable, the radiators can be stowed. Passive thermal control systems are unpowered and can increase system reliability by not …

Low-Fidelity Design Optimization And Parameter Sensitivity Analysis Of Tilt-Rotor Evtol Electric Propulsion Systems, Tyler Critchfield, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

Urban air mobility requires a multidisciplinary approach to tackle the important chal- lenges facing the design of these aircraft. This work uses low-to-mid fidelity tools to model rotor aerodynamics, blade structures, vehicle aerodynamics, and electric propulsion for a tilt-rotor electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. We use gradient-based design optimization and extensive parameter sensitivity analysis to explore the design space and complex tradeoffs of tilt-rotor distributed electric propulsion systems.

Retention Forces For Drops On Microstructured Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Shaur Humayun, R. Daniel Maynes, Julie Crockett, Brian D. Iverson

Faculty Publications

Accurate models of retention forces between drops and superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces are required to predict drop dynamics on the surface. This retention force is, in turn, useful in modeling heat transfer rates for dropwise condensation on a SH surface. Drop contact angle distribution and base area on SH surfaces are essential factors for predicting retention forces. The present work measures the contact angle distribution and base area shapes of various drop sizes over a wide range of solid fraction for inclined microstructured SH surfaces at the point of drop departure. Base area shape was found to be well approximated using …

Meshless Large Eddy Simulation Of Propeller-Wing Interactions With Reformulated Vortex Particle Method, Eduardo Alvarez, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

The vortex particle method (VPM) has gained popularity in recent years due to a growing need to predict complex aerodynamic interactions during preliminary design of electric multirotor aircraft. However, VPM is known to be numerically unstable when vortical structures break down close to the turbulent regime. In recent work, the VPM has been reformulated as a large eddy simulation (LES) in a scheme that is both meshless and numerically stable, without increasing its computational cost. In this study, we build upon this meshless LES scheme to create a solver for interactional aerodynamics. Rotor blades are introduced through an actuator line …

Direct Material Property Determination: One-Dimensional Formulation Utilising Full-Field Deformation Measurements, Sreehair Rajan-Kattil, Michael A. Sutton, Subramani Sockalingam, Frank Thomas, Tusit Weerasooriya, Stephen Alexander

Faculty Publications

A direct approach is described to determine the elastic modulus distribution in a nominally heterogeneous material subject to tensile/compression loading and primarily experiencing deformations in the axial direction. The formulation is developed for uniaxial applications using basic theoretical constructs, resulting in a computational framework that has a matrix form [A] {E} = {R}, where the [A] matrix components are known functions of measured axial strains and axial positions, {R} components are known functions of axial body forces, applied loads and reactions and {E} components are the unknown elastic moduli at discrete locations along the length of the specimen. For a …

Uav Rapidly-Deployable Stage Sensor With Electro-Permanent Magnet Docking Mechanism For Flood Monitoring In Undersampled Watersheds, Corinne A, Smith, Joud Satme, Jacob Martin, Austin Downey, Nikolaos Vitzilaios, Jasim Imran

Faculty Publications

The availability of historical flood data is vital in recognizing weather-related trends and outlining necessary precautions for at-risk communities. Flood frequency, magnitude, endurance, and volume are traditionally recorded using established streamgages; however, the material and installation costs allow only a few streamgages in a region, which yield a narrow data selection. In particular, stage, the vertical water height in a water body, is an important parameter in determining flood trends. This work investigates a low-cost, compact, rapidly-deployable alternative to traditional stage sensors that will allow for denser sampling within a watershed and a more detailed record of flood events. The …

We are surrounded by a growing number of products with embedded intelligence relying on sensors and internet access. These smart products, that already transform our lives, are also physical entities that need to be manufactured. Manufacturing today similarly relies on data and data-driven insights to improve quality, efficiency, and safety on the shopfloor. This paper discusses the vision to utilize the ability of smart products to sense and communicate already during their own manufacturing to enrich the smart manufacturing system’s data for better insights development and optimization. We furthermore, discuss the barriers and opportunities embedded in such a paradigm shift.

Reliable Mode Tracking For Gradient-Based Optimization With Dynamic Stability Constraints, Taylor Mcdonnell, Andrew Ning Oct 2022

Reliable Mode Tracking For Gradient-Based Optimization With Dynamic Stability Constraints, Taylor Mcdonnell, Andrew Ning

Faculty Publications

In order to construct mode-specific flutter constraints for use in gradient-based multidisciplinary design optimization frameworks, mode tracking must be used to associate the current iteration's modes with the modes corresponding to each constraint function. Existing mode tracking methods, however, do not provide a method by which to ensure the accuracy of mode associations, making them unsuitable for use in situations where obtaining correct mode associations is critical. To remedy this issue, a new mode tracking method is presented which incorporates backtracking logic in order to maintain an arbitrarily high degree of confidence in mode correlations during gradient-based optimization and/or during …

Impact Of Zirconia Slurry In Steel Powder On Melt Pool Characteristics In Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Taylor Davis, Tracy W. Nelson, Nathan B. Crane

Faculty Publications

Purpose – dding dopants to a powder bed could be a cost-effective method for spatially varying the material properties in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) or for evaluating new materials and processing relationships. However, these additions may impact the selection of processing parameters. Furthermore, these impacts may be different when depositing nanoparticles into the powder bed than when the same composition is incorporated into the powder particles as by ball milling of powders or mixing similarly sized powders. This study aims to measure the changes in the single bead characteristics with laser power, laser scan speed, laser spot size and …

Faculty Publications

A traditional composite cathode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs) is typically obtained by mixing cathode materials and proton conducting electrolyte of BaCe0.7Y0.2Zr0.1O3–δ (BZCY), providing chemical and thermal compatibility with the electrolyte. Here, a series of triple-conducing and cobalt-free iron-based perovskites as cathodes for H-SOFCs is reported. Specifically, BaCexFe1–xO3–δ (x = 0.36, 0.43, and 0.50) shows various contents of two single phase perovskites with an in situ heterojunction structure as well as triple conductivity by tailoring the Ce/Fe ratios. The cell performance with the optimized BaCe0.36 …

Overview Of Arbitrarily High-Order Adjoint Sensitivity And Uncertainty Quantification Methodology For Large-Scale Systems, Dan Gabriel Cacuci

Faculty Publications

This work reviews from a unified viewpoint the concepts underlying the “nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems” (nth-CASAM-L) and the “nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Nonlinear Systems” (nth-CASAM-N) methodologies. The practical application of the nth-CASAM-L methodology is illustrated for an OECD/NEA reactor physics benchmark, while the practical application of the nth-CASAM-N methodology is illustrated for a nonlinear model of reactor dynamics that exhibits periodic and chaotic oscillations. As illustrated both by the general theory and by the examples reviewed in this work, both the nth-CASAM-L and nth-CASAM-N methodologies overcome the curse of dimensionality …

Effects Of Rotor-Airframe Interaction On The Aeromechanics And Wake Of A Quadcopter In Forward Flight, Denis-Gabriel Caprace, Andrew Ning, Philippe Chatelain, Grégoire Winckelmans

Faculty Publications

From small drones to large Urban Air Mobility vehicles, the market of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft is currently booming. Modern VTOL designs feature a variety of configurations involving rotors, lifting surfaces and bluff bodies. The resulting aerodynamics are highly impacted by the interactions between those components and their wakes. This has consequences on the aircraft performance and on the downstream wake. Studying the effects of those interactions through CFD can inform the development of cheaper numerical models. In this work, we focus on the interaction between rotors and bluff bodies based on the example of a generic quadcopter …

Optimizing Build Plate Adhesion Of Polymers In Fused Granule Fabrication Processes, Alex Schroeder, Jason Weaver Aug 2022

Optimizing Build Plate Adhesion Of Polymers In Fused Granule Fabrication Processes, Alex Schroeder, Jason Weaver

Faculty Publications

Perhaps the most crucial element of fused granule fabrication (FGF) is material adhesion; in order to achieve a successful product, the material being printed must adhere to the build plate. For optimal products, the material should only adhere to the build plate until the print is complete, then be easily removable. This paper examines the effects of different build plates, environments, and bonding agents on material adhesion during the FGF process in a CNC mill machine. The force to remove polycarbonate (PC) and polypropylene (PP) from build plates was tested with various bonding agents. Except in one case, the adhesive …

A Comparison Of Layer Deposition And Open Molding Of Petg By Fused Pellet Fabrication In An Additive Manufacturing System, Alex Gibson, Jason Weaver

Faculty Publications

Additive manufacturing continues to offer new possibilities in both production and economics. The industry has quickly adopted it to rapidly produce parts that would be difficult or cost preventative otherwise. Recent innovation has expanded its capabilities, however there are still significant limitations. Most AM processes are restricted by materials available, in producing large parts, or by not achieving material deposition speeds to make certain products feasible. In addition, tight tolerances for features and surfaces cannot be produced without substantial post processing. High-speed Fused Pellet Fabrication (FPF) in combination with Hybrid Manufacturing (HM) offers expanded capabilities as additive and subtractive process …

Trade-Off Characterization Between Social And Environmental Impacts Using Agent-Based Models And Life-Cycle Assessment, Joseph C. Leichty, Christopher S. Mabey, Christopher A. Mattson, John L. Salmon, Jason Weaver

Faculty Publications

Meeting the UN’s sustainable development goals requires designers and engineers to solve multi-objective optimization problems involving trade-offs between social, environmental, and economic impacts. This paper presents an approach for designers and engineers to quantify the social and environmental impacts of a product at a population-level and then perform a trade-off analysis between those impacts. In the approach, designers and engineers define the attributes of the product as well as the materials and processes used in the product’s life cycle. Agent-Based Modeling (ABM) tools that have been developed to model the social impacts of products are combined with Life- Cycle Assessment …

Strain And Strain Rate In Friction Extrusion, Xiao Li, Md Reza-E- Rabby, Anthony Guzman, Glenn Grant, Suveen Mathaudhu, Michah Hinton, Anthony P. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Friction extrusion is a metal forming process that generates large plastic strains and deformation-induced heating through friction between a rotating die and the material to be extruded. The final deformation state in friction extruded wire has been visualized in previous studies but the distribution and evolution of strain and strain rate inside the solid material have yet to be elucidated. This paper develops an approach that reveals the deformation during the process by visualizing the shape change of the pre-embedded markers in the remnant billet. For the first time, the distribution of steady-state strain and strain rate in friction extrusion …

A Primer On The Factories Of The Future, Noble Anumbe, Clint Saidy, Ramy Harik

Faculty Publications

In a dynamic and rapidly changing world, customers’ often conflicting demands have continued to evolve, outstripping the ability of the traditional factory to address modern-day production challenges. To fix these challenges, several manufacturing paradigms have been proposed. Some of these have monikers such as the smart factory, intelligent factory, digital factory, and cloud-based factory. Due to a lack of consensus on general nomenclature, the term Factory of the Future (or Future Factory) has been used in this paper as a collective euphemism for these paradigms. The Factory of the Future constitutes a creative convergence of multiple technologies, techniques, and capabilities …

Predicting Lattice Vibrational Frequencies Using Deep Graph Neural Networks, Nghia Nguyen, Steph-Yves V. Louis, Lai Wei, Kamal Choudhary, Ming Hu, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

Lattice vibrational frequencies are related to many important materials properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity as well as superconductivity. However, computational calculation of vibrational frequencies using density functional theory methods is computationally too demanding for large number of samples in materials screening. Here we propose a deep graph neural network based algorithm for predicting crystal vibrational frequencies from crystal structures. Our algorithm addresses the variable dimension of vibrational frequency spectrum using the zero padding scheme. Benchmark studies on two data sets with 15,000 mixed-structure and 35,552 rhombohedra samples show that the aggregated R2 scores of the prediction reach …

Optimised Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Using Adjoint Guided Mesh Adaptivity Applied To Neutron Detector Response Calculations, Andrew G. Buchan, Dan Gabriel Cacuci, Steven Dargaville, Christopher C. Pain

Faculty Publications

This article presents a new approach for the efficient calculation of sensitivities in radiation dose estimates, subject to imprecisely known nuclear material cross-section data. The method is a combined application of adjoint-based models to perform, simultaneously, both the sensitivity calculation together with optimal adaptive mesh refinement. Adjoint-based sensitivity methods are known for their efficiency since they enable sensitivities of all parameters to be formed through only two solutions to the problem. However, the efficient solutions can also be obtained by their computation on optimal meshes, here guided by goal-based adjoint approaches. It is shown that both mesh adaptivity and sensitivity …

Structural Health Monitoring Of Fatigue Cracks For Steel Bridges With Wireless Large-Area Strain Sensors, Sdiq Anwar Taher, Jian Li, Jong-Hyun Jeong, Simon Laflamme, Hongki Jo, Caroline Bennett, William N. Collins, Austin Downey

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a field implementation of the structural health monitoring (SHM) of fatigue cracks for steel bridge structures. Steel bridges experience fatigue cracks under repetitive traffic loading, which pose great threats to their structural integrity and can lead to catastrophic failures. Currently, accurate and reliable fatigue crack monitoring for the safety assessment of bridges is still a difficult task. On the other hand, wireless smart sensors have achieved great success in global SHM by enabling long-term modal identifications of civil structures. However, long-term field monitoring of localized damage such as fatigue cracks has been limited due to the lack …

Efficiently Searching Extreme Mechanical Properties Via Boundless Objective-Free Exploration And Minimal First-Principles Calculations, Joshua Ojih, Mohammed Al-Fahdi, Alejandro David Rodriguez, Kamal Choudhary, Ming Hu

Faculty Publications

Despite the machine learning (ML) methods have been largely used recently, the predicted materials properties usually cannot exceed the range of original training data. We deployed a boundless objective-free exploration approach to combine traditional ML and density functional theory (DFT) in searching extreme material properties. This combination not only improves the efficiency for screening large-scale materials with minimal DFT inquiry, but also yields properties beyond original training range. We use Stein novelty to recommend outliers and then verify using DFT. Validated data are then added into the training dataset for next round iteration. We test the loop of training-recommendation-validation in …
