Laser-induced-forward-transfer (LIFT) bioprinting technology has been viewed as a regenerative medicine technology because of its high printing quality and good cell viability. To stabilize the jet to achieve high-quality printing, an energy-absorbing layer (EAL) can be introduced. In this study, three materials (graphene, gelatin, and gold) were utilized as the EAL. The effect of each EAL on the jet generation process was investigated. Besides, the effect of graphene EAL thickness was addressed for various experimental conditions. The jet generation process using sodium alginate solutions with different concentrations (1 and 2 wt. %) was also discussed to investigate the effect of …
Using Actor-Critic Reinforcement Learning For Control Of A Quadrotor Dynamics, Edgar Adrian Torres
Using Actor-Critic Reinforcement Learning For Control Of A Quadrotor Dynamics, Edgar Adrian Torres
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents a quadrotor controller using reinforcement learning to generate near-optimal control signals. Two actor-critic algorithms are trained to control quadrotor dynamics. The dynamics are further simplified using small angle approximation. The actor-critic algorithm’s control policy is derived from Bellman’s equation providing a sufficient condition to optimality. Additionally, a smoother converter is implemented into the trajectory providing more reliable results. This paper provides derivations to the quadrotor’s dynamics and explains the control using the actor-critic algorithm. The results and simulations are compared to solutions from a commercial, optimal control solver, called DIDO.

Wave Excited Mass-Spring-Damper System For A Self-Recharging Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Mahmodul Hasan Maheen
Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous underwater vehicles' (AUVs) endurance is constrained by the lifetime of their batteries and the distance that tether wires can traverse. Solving the endurance problem of AUV using the enormous potential of ocean wave energy is the motivation behind this thesis. The objective of this research is to model a mass-spring-damper system to emulate the permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) of a self-recharging AUV and identify its energy absorption capability through numerical simulation and experimental testing. The research activities started with modeling and fabricating a 1:5 scale model. The scaling was done by comparing the most common AUV size of …

The Effects Of Carbon Coating On The Electrochemical Performance Of Metal-Oxide Short Fiber Anodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, David A. Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the process of oxidizing centrifugally spun precursor fibers and the subsequent process of carbon coating via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for use as anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Metal oxides have been studied as a potential replacement for graphite as they have been shown to have high theoretical capacities, good electronic conductivity, and can be synthesized using low-cost, scalable methods. However, metal oxides with high theoretical capacities also have low cycle life. To avoid this, metal oxides have been integrated with carbon to expand their life cycle. The work in this thesis shows the synthesis …

Near-Optimal Control Of A Quadcopter Using Reinforcement Learning, Alberto Velazquez-Estrada
Theses and Dissertations
This paper presents a novel control method for quadcopters that achieves near-optimal tracking control for input-affine nonlinear quadcopter dynamics. The method uses a reinforcement learning algorithm called Single Network Adaptive Critics (SNAC), which approximates a solution to the discrete-time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (DT-HJB) equation using a single neural network trained offline. The control method involves two SNAC controllers, with the outer loop controlling the linear position and velocities (position control) and the inner loop controlling the angular position and velocities (attitude control). The resulting quadcopter controller provides optimal feedback control and tracks a trajectory for an infinite-horizon, and it is compared with …

Naphtha is an important distillation product of crude oil, and is used as a raw material for first-generation products such as ethylene, propylene, gasoline, xylene (BTX), and others. However, due to the different sources of crude oil, differences in naphtha composition impact the quality of conversion processes. Parameters such as pressure, charge flow, and temperature need to be adjusted for conversion efficiency. This work aims to compare naphtha samples from different origins, through the analysis of distillation curve (ASTM D86), density (ASTM D4052), total sulfur (ASTM D4294), and n-paraffins, iso-paraffins, olefins, naphthene, and aromatics (PIONA, ASTM D5134). Among these parameters …

High entropy alloys (HEAs) can be manufactured in many conventional ways, but it becomes difficult to fabricate heterogeneous materials and structures. The Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method generally melts pure elemental powders or prefabricated alloy powders without an alloying process. In-situ alloying in SLM, which is also called Laser Additive Alloying (LAA), using pure elemental powders becomes a promising method for creating HEA with heterogeneous structures. However, the effect of the diffusion of elements in the molten pool on the formation of HEA remains unclear. In this paper, the well-discussed Cantor HEA was studied in an in-situ alloying situation, where …

Feasibility Analysis Of A Wave Powered Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, Yingchen Yang, Erick Martinez
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) powered by renewable energy would enable it to extend endurance and forward presence with no logistics tail for fuel. A wave powered concept AUV is proposed and analyzed for this purpose. The AUV is in a torpedo shape and employs a fully hull-encapsulated mass-spring-damper system as its power take-off (PTO) unit. While in the recharging mode, the AUV surfaces and converts wave energy for electricity. Considering the AUV of a common size, our analysis indicates that resonance of the AUV and/or its PTO, to be excited by ocean waves, becomes impossible in typical ocean conditions. …

Infrared thermography is a non-destructive technique that can be exploited in many fields including polymer composite investigation. Based on emissivity and thermal diffusivity variation; components, defects, and curing state of the composite can be identified. However, manual processing of thermal images that may contain significant artifacts, is prone to erroneous component and property determination. In this study, thermal images of different graphite/graphene-based polymer composites fabricated by hand, planetary, and batch mixing techniques were analyzed through an automatic machine learning model. Filler size, shape, and location can be identified in polymer composites and thus, the dispersion of different samples was quantified …

In this study, an alternative mathematical representation of a drill-string is proposed to provide an alternative assessment on BHA dynamic alterations. Lateral vibrations remain the focal point of drill-string breakdowns given their high frequency characterization and ability to deviate perforation trajectories from the subsurface target. In this paper, the proposed model consists of an anisotropic rotor subjected to distinct RPMs, an axial force, and a bidirectional harmonic excitation with specified amplitude and assorted duration to simulate annulus motion generated from the mud fluid. In this regard, Euler-Bernoulli beam theory was adopted to establish a complete MDOF mathematical expression and thus …

Development Of An Improved Mathematical Representation Which Captures The Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior Of A Drill-String Assembly, Eleazar Marquez
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
In this study, an improved mathematical representation of a drill-string assembly is developed to provide an alternative assessment on vibration irregularities proliferating downhole due to bit-rock interference. Lateral vibrations receive particular attention due to their high frequency content which alter the dynamic response of the drill-string, instigate casing damage, and impede optimal penetration rates. The response of the drill-string is captured by synthesizing compatible stationary bit excitations, via an auto-regressive digital filter, and implementing Monte Carlo simulation, while the power spectral density function is approximated to elucidate the dynamic characteristics during drilling. Formulating adequate physical parameters for the equation of …

In this paper, a mathematical representation is proposed to further understand the dynamic behavior and risk factors associated with vibration-assisted drilling (VAD) technology. The proposed Timoshenko beam model, which characterizes VAD technology, consists of two passive, counter-rotating coaxial rotors operating simultaneously, subjected to a stochastic excitation. In this regard, a finite element technique was incorporated to determine the physical parameters of the governing equation of motion, where the shear and rotary effects, as well as the gyroscopic couples generated perpendicular to the axis of rotation, were accounted for. Further, the relative velocity between the coaxial rotors was accounted in the …

In this paper, optimal tracking control is found for an inputaffine nonlinear quadcopter using Single Network Adaptive Critics (SNAC). The quadcopter dynamics consists of twelve states and four controls. The states are defined using two related reference frames: the earth frame, which describes the position and angles, and the body frame, which describes the linear and angular velocities. The quadcopter has six outputs and four controls, so it is an underactuated nonlinear system. The optimal control for the system is derived by solving a discrete-time recursive Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation using a linear in-parameter neural network. The neural network is trained to …

The Deflection And Heat Transfer Analysis Of Injection Mold Cavity With Sla Cooling Channel Insert, Olumide Temidayo Aladesiun
Theses and Dissertations
Fast cooling in injection molding is the critical in the process economy. Among many different cooling channel designs available, conformal cooling offers the best and the most efficient cooling. However, limited awareness, accessibility, complexity, cost, knowledge, and experience limit the use of conformal cooling channels to be used into the mold in a molding process.
Typically, SLM(Selective Laser Melting) method is used to create cavity inserts with conformal cooling channels, however, due to the difficulties listed above, applications of conformal cooling channels are very limited. For an inexpensive alternative SLA (Stereolithography Apparatus) can print cavity inserts with conformal cooling channels. …
