Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
The size and lattice constant evolution of Pb nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized by high fluence implantation in crystalline Si have been studied with a variety of experimental techniques. Results obtained from small-angle x-ray scattering showed that the Pb NPs grow with increasing implantation fluence and annealing duration. The theory of NP growth kinetics can be applied to qualitatively explain the size evolution of the Pb NPs during the implantation and annealing processes. Moreover, the lattice constant of the Pb NPs was evaluated by conventional x-ray diffraction. The lattice dilatation was observed to decrease with increasing size of the Pb NPs. Such …

Experimental Testing And Finite-Element Modeling To Evaluate The Effects Of Aggregate Angularity On Bituminous Mixture Performance, Leonardo T. Souza, Yong-Rak Kim, Flavio V. Souza, Leandro S. Castro
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
This study evaluates the effects of aggregate angularity in bituminous mixtures. Previous studies have predominantly focused on the effects of aggregate angularity on the resistance to permanent deformation, while little work has investigated the role of aggregate angularity related to mixture volumetrics and fatigue fracture performance. To investigate the effect of aggregate angularity on mixture performance and characteristics, five mixes with different combinations of coarse and fine aggregate angularity are evaluated by performing the uniaxial static creep test and the indirect tensile fracture energy test. The asphalt pavement analyzer test is also performed with five-year field project mixtures. Fracture energy …

Moisture Damage Characterization Of Warm-Mix Asphalt Mixtures Based On Laboratory-Field Evaluation, Yong-Rak Kim, Jun Zhang, Hoki Ban
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
This study presents laboratory evaluation integrated with field performance to examine two widely used warm-mix asphalt (WMA) approaches—foaming and emulsion technology. For a more realistic evaluation of the WMA approaches, trial pavement sections of the WMA mixtures and their counterpart hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures were implemented in Antelope County, Nebraska. Field-mixed loose mixtures collected at the time of paving were transported to the laboratories to conduct various experimental evaluations of the individual mixtures. Among the laboratory tests, three (two conventional and one newly attempted) were performed to characterize moisture damage potential which is the primary focus of this study. From …
Monitoring The Wall Mechanics During Stent Deployment In A Vessel, Brian Steinert, Shijia Zhao, Linxia Gu
Monitoring The Wall Mechanics During Stent Deployment In A Vessel, Brian Steinert, Shijia Zhao, Linxia Gu
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Clinical trials have reported different restenosis rates for various stent designs . It is speculated that stentinduced strain concentrations on the arterial wall lead to tissue injury, which initiates restenosis . This hypothesis needs further investigations including better quantifications of non-uniform strain distribution on the artery following stent implantation. A non-contact surface strain measurement method for the stented artery is presented in this work. ARAMIS stereo optical surface strain measurement system uses two optical high speed cameras to capture the motion of each reference point, and resolve three dimensional strains over the deforming surface. As a mesh stent is deployed …
Thickness-Shear And Thickness-Twist Modes In An Oblate Elliptical Ceramic Cylinder And Energy Trapping In Contoured Acoustic Wave Resonators, Huijing He, Jiashi Yang, Yi-Hua Huang
Thickness-Shear And Thickness-Twist Modes In An Oblate Elliptical Ceramic Cylinder And Energy Trapping In Contoured Acoustic Wave Resonators, Huijing He, Jiashi Yang, Yi-Hua Huang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We study shear-horizontal motions of a piezoelectric ceramic cylinder with an oblate elliptical cross section and axial poling. Exact thickness-shear and thickness-twist vibration modes are obtained. These modes show energy trapping, i.e., the vibration is mainly confined near the thick, central region and decays to almost nothing near the edges. The results are useful for the understanding and design of contoured piezoelectric resonators for strong energy trapping.

Atherosclerosis is intimately coupled to blood flow by the presence of predilection sites. The coupling is through mechanotransduction of endothelial cells and approximately 2000 gene are associated with this process. This paper describes a new platform to study and identify new signalling pathways in endothelial cells covering an atherosclerotic plaque. The identified networks are synthesized in primary cells to study their reaction to flow. This synthetic approach might lead to new insights and drug targets.

Nanotopographic Cell Culture Substrate: Polymer-Demixed Nanotextured Films Under Cell Culture Conditions, Jung Yul Lim, Christopher A. Siedlecki, Henry J. Donahue
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Modulating physical cell culture environments via nanoscale substrate topographic modification has recently been of significant interest in regenerative medicine. Many studies have utilized a polymer-demixing technique to produce nanotextured films and showed that cellular adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation could be regulated by the shape and scale of the polymer-demixed nanotopographies. However, little attention has been paid to the topographic fidelity of the polymer-demixed films when exposed to cell culture conditions. In this brief article, two polymer-demixing systems were employed to assess topographic changes in polymer-demixed films after fibronectin (FN) extracellular matrix protein adsorption and after incubation in phosphate-buffered saline at …

Usability Assessment Of Two Different Control Modes For The Master Console Of A Laparoscopic Surgical Robot, Xiaoli Zhang, Carl A. Nelson, Dmitry Oleynikov
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The objective of this study is to evaluate potential interface control modes for a compact fourdegree- of-freedom (4-DOF) surgical robot. The goal is to improve robot usability by incorporating a sophisticated haptics-capable interface. Two control modes were developed using a commercially available haptic joystick: (1) a virtually point-constrained interface providing an analog for constrained laparoscopic motion (3-DOF rotation and 1-DOF translation), and (2) an unconstrained Cartesian input interface mapping more directly to the surgical tool tip motions. Subjects (n = 5) successfully performed tissue identification and manipulation tasks in an animal model in point-constrained and unconstrained control modes, respectively, with …

Tool Sequence Trends In Minimally Invasive Surgery: Statistical Analysis And Implications For Predictive Control Of Multifunction Instruments, Carl A. Nelson, Evan Luxon, Dmitry Oleynikov
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper presents an analysis of 67 minimally invasive surgical procedures covering 11 different procedure types to determine patterns of tool use. A new graph-theoretic approach was taken to organize and analyze the data. Through grouping surgeries by type, trends of common tool changes were identified. Using the concept of signal/noise ratio, these trends were found to be statistically strong. The tool-use trends were used to generate tool placement patterns for modular (multi-tool, cartridge-type) surgical tool systems, and the same 67 surgeries were numerically simulated to determine the optimality of these tool arrangements. The results indicate that aggregated tool-use data …
The Impact Of Wire Stent Fabrication Technique On The Performance Of Stent Placement, Shijia Zhao, Xiangyi (Cheryl) Liu, Linxia Gu
The Impact Of Wire Stent Fabrication Technique On The Performance Of Stent Placement, Shijia Zhao, Xiangyi (Cheryl) Liu, Linxia Gu
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Braided wire stents demonstrate distinct characteristics compared to welded ones. In this study, both braided and welded wire stents with the same nominal dimensions were crimped inside a sheath and then deployed into a stenosed artery using finite element analysis. The braided wire stent was generated by overlapping wires to form crisscross shape. A welded wire stent was created by welding the intersection points of wires to avoid sliding between wires. The effect of fabrication technique on mechanical behavior of Nitinol wire stents was evaluated. The results showed that relative sliding between wires reduced the deformation of the braided stent, …

Arterial Wall Mechanics And Clinical Implications After Coronary Stenting: Comparisons Of Three Stent Designs, Linxia Gu, Shijia Zhao, Stacey R. Froemming
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
The goal of this work is to quantitatively assess the relationship between the reported restenosis rates and stent induced arterial stress or strain parameters through finite element method. The impact of three stent designs (Palmaz–Schatz stent, Express stent, and Multilink Vision stent) on the arterial stress distributions were characterized. The influences of initial stent deployment location, stent-tissue friction, and plaque properties on the arterial stresses were also investigated. Higher arterial stresses were observed at the proximal end of the plaque. The Multilink–Vision stent induced lesser stress concentrations due to the high stiffness of the Cobalt Chromium material and thinner strut …
In Vivo Demonstration Of Surgical Task Assistance Using Miniature Robots, Jeff A. Hawks, Jacob Kunowski, Stephen R. Platt
In Vivo Demonstration Of Surgical Task Assistance Using Miniature Robots, Jeff A. Hawks, Jacob Kunowski, Stephen R. Platt
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Laparoscopy is beneficial to patients as measured by less painful recovery and an earlier return to functional health compared to conventional open surgery. However, laparoscopy requires the manipulation of long, slender tools from outside the patient’s body. As a result, laparoscopy generally benefits only patients undergoing relatively simple procedures. An innovative approach to laparoscopy uses miniature in vivo robots that fit entirely inside the abdominal cavity. Our previous work demonstrated that a mobile, wireless robot platform can be successfully operated inside the abdominal cavity with different payloads (biopsy, camera, and physiological sensors). We hope that these robots are a step toward …

Analysis Of A Monolithic, Two-Dimensional Array Of Quartz Crystal Microbalances Loaded By Mass Layers With Nonuniform Thickness, Nan Liu, J. S. Yang, Ji Wang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We study free thickness-shear vibrations of a monolithic, two-dimensional, and periodic array of quartz crystal microbalances loaded by mass layers with gradually varying thickness. A theoretical analysis is performed using Mindlin’s two-dimensional plate equation. It is shown that the problem is mathematically governed by Mathieu’s equation with a spatially varying coefficient. A periodic solution for resonant frequencies and modes is obtained and used to examine the effects of the mass layers. Results show that the vibration may be trapped or untrapped under the mass layers. The trapped modes decay differently in the two in-plane directions of the plate. The mode …
Generic Strategies To Implement Material Grading In Finite Element Methods For Isotropic And Anisotropic Materials, Ke Yu
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We look at generic strategies to transfer material grading into finite element methods. Three strategies are proposed to transfer material grading into the finite element analysis. These strategies are node-centered, element-centered, and the definition of material grading through external functions. The process to achieve each strategy is stated, and examples are used to illustrate each strategy, and to compare them. The strategies are implemented in finite-deformation nonlinear elastic analysis.
Several examples are used to illustrate the implementation of each strategy for graded isotropic materials. For these examples, the results obtained from finite element models are compared with those obtained from …
Effect Of Extracellular Matrix (Ecm) Protein Micropatterns On The Behavior Of Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Ishwari Poudel
Effect Of Extracellular Matrix (Ecm) Protein Micropatterns On The Behavior Of Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Ishwari Poudel
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Recent advances in patterning techniques and emerging surface microtechnologies have allowed cell micropatterning to control spatial location of the cells on a surface as well as cell shape, attachment area, and number of contacting neighbor cells. These parameters play important roles in cell cellular behaviors. Cell micropatterning has thus become one of the most important strategies for biomedical applications, such as, tissue engineering, diagnostic immunoassays, lab-on-chip devices, bio-sensing, etc., and cell biology studies as well. For neuronal cells, there have been attempts to distribute neuronal cells on specific patterns to control cell-to-cell interaction. However, there have been very limited understanding …
Anisotropic Thermal Property Measurement Of Carbon-Fiber/Epoxy Composite Materials, Tian Tian
Anisotropic Thermal Property Measurement Of Carbon-Fiber/Epoxy Composite Materials, Tian Tian
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This work originated from a need for understanding heat transfer in carbon-fiber/epoxy natural-gas tanks undergoing rapid heating during refilling. The dissertation is focused on the determination of the anisotropic thermal properties of carbon-fiber/epoxy composite materials for in-plane and through-thickness directions. An effective anisotropic parameter estimation system consisting of the 3ω experimental technique and an anisotropic two-dimensional heat transfer model is developed.
In the present work, the 3ω method, an experimental technique that has been well established to evaluate the thermal properties of isotropic materials, especially thin film materials, is extended to treat the thermal properties of bulk anisotropic …
Design, Analysis, And Testing Of In Vivo Surgical Robots, Tyler David Wortman
Design, Analysis, And Testing Of In Vivo Surgical Robots, Tyler David Wortman
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Advances in technology have shaped the history of surgical procedures. Recent developments have allowed surgical procedures to become less invasive than traditional open procedures. The transition to Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has resulted in decreased recovery times, improved cosmetic results, and reduced costs. For these reasons, there is interest in further reducing the invasiveness of surgical procedures by accessing the abdominal cavity through a single incision, such as with Laparoendoscopic Single-Site (LESS) surgery. Added complexities, such as unintuitive controls and limited dexterity, prevent the widespread adoption of LESS for complex surgical procedures. Multi-functional in vivo surgical robots have been designed …
Strength Of Polycrystalline Ceramics Under Shock Compression, Jianbin Zhu
Strength Of Polycrystalline Ceramics Under Shock Compression, Jianbin Zhu
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Determinations of Some polycrystalline ceramics’ strength properties and inelastic deformation mechanisms in the shocked state are critically important to the design and optimization of armor structures involving these materials. In this work, multiscale modeling and simulations have been carried out to study strength of the effects of polycrystalline microstructure, crystal anisotropy, porosity, and their interactions with microscopic deformation/damage mechanisms on the responses of several polycrystalline ceramics under shock compression and to extract their shock strengths from the wave profiles measured in the related plate impact shock wave experiments.
With a mesoscopic computational model, the roles of intragranular microplasticity and deformation …
Feasibility Analysis And Concept Development Of A Crash Cushion Diaphragm Structure For High-Speed Race Tracks, Curt Lee Meyer
Feasibility Analysis And Concept Development Of A Crash Cushion Diaphragm Structure For High-Speed Race Tracks, Curt Lee Meyer
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A new diaphragm and dual guide rail system was designed for use in a crash cushion for high-speed race tracks. These structural components were designed to provide sufficient lateral support to redirect impacting vehicles and compress the energy-absorbing elements of the crash cushion. The primary design criteria stated that the diaphragm/guide rail system should be capable of withstanding a 100-kip lateral impact load. The guide rail was to be configured in order to not require replacement after a design impact event. Initial design and modeling resulted in two candidates for guide rail sections which were evaluated during physical testing. The …
Seamless Bridge And Roadway System For The U.S. Practice, Nima Ala
Seamless Bridge And Roadway System For The U.S. Practice, Nima Ala
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Expansion joints are one of the main causes for high maintenance costs in bridges. The search for ideal expansion joints has proven fruitless. That is why it has been said that “the best joint is no joint”. A seamless bridge system is envisioned that results in bridges with long service lives by eliminating the joints over the entire length of the bridge, approach slab and a segment of the roadway called transition. All bridge thermal movements are dissipated to zero in the transition. The system is similar to a system developed in Australia but modifications had to be made to …

Thickness-Shear And Thickness-Twist Vibrations Of An At-Cut Quartz Mesa Resonator, Huijing He, Jinxi Liu, Jiashi Yang
Thickness-Shear And Thickness-Twist Vibrations Of An At-Cut Quartz Mesa Resonator, Huijing He, Jinxi Liu, Jiashi Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We study thickness-shear and thickness-twist vibrations of an AT-cut quartz plate mesa resonator with stepped thickness. The equations of anisotropic elasticity are used with the omission of the small elastic constant c56. An analytical solution is obtained using Fourier series from which the resonant frequencies, mode shapes, and energy trapping are calculated and examined. The solution shows that a mesa resonator exhibits strong energy trapping of thickness-shear and thickness-twist modes, and that the trapping is sensitive to some of the structural parameters of the resonator.
In Vivo Three-Dimensional Blood Velocity Profile Shapes In The Human Common, Internal, And External Carotid Arteries, Alexey Kamenskiy, Yuris A. Dzenis, Jason N. Mactaggart, Anastasia Desyatova, Iraklis I. Pipinos
Pipinos
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Objective: True understanding of carotid bifurcation pathophysiology requires a detailed knowledge of the hemodynamic conditions within the arteries. Data on carotid artery hemodynamics are usually based on simplified, computer-based, or in vitro experimental models, most of which assume that the velocity profiles are axially symmetric away from the carotid bulb. Modeling accuracy and, more importantly, our understanding of the pathophysiology of carotid bifurcation disease could be considerably improved by more precise knowledge of the in vivo flow properties within the human carotid artery. The purpose of this work was to determine the three-dimensional pulsatile velocity profiles of human carotid arteries. …

Numerical Modeling Of Steady Burning Characteristics Of Spherical Ethanol Particles In A Spray Environment, Vaibhav Kumar Sahu, Vasudevan Raghavan, Daniel N. Pope, George Gogos
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
A numerical study of steady burning of spherical ethanol particles in a spray environment is presented. A spray environment is modeled as a high temperature oxidizer stream where the major products of combustion such as carbon dioxide and water vapor will be present along with reduced amounts of oxygen and nitrogen. The numerical model, which employs variable thermophysical properties, a global single-step reaction mechanism, and an optically thin radiation model, has been first validated against published experimental results for quasi-steady combustion of spherical ethanol particles. The validated model has been employed to predict the burning behavior of the ethanol particle …

Increased Efficiency Of Low Band Gap Polymer Solar Cells At Elevated Temperature And Its Origins, Bin Yang, James Cox, Yongbo Yuan, Fawen Guo, Jinsong Huang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Photovoltaic characteristics of a low bandgap polymer, poly[(4,4′-bis(2-lethylhexyl)dithieno-[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-4,7-diyl], based bulk hetero-junction organic photovoltaic were investigated from room temperature (RT) to 145 °C to evaluate its applications in harsh environments. The power conversion efficiency was found to increase from 4.1% at RT to 4.5% at 105 °C with increased short circuit current density (Jsc) and fill factor (FF) despite the decreased open circuit voltage (Voc). Detailed investigation revealed that Jsc and FF improvements were caused by the increased and balanced carrier mobilities at higher temperatures. The Voc of the low bandgap …
