Titanium alloys are well known for their excellent strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance and is highly sought after in the aerospace industry. Additionally, titanium alloys maintain a high biocompatibility for implants and other medical devices. However, these alloys are notorious for their poor machinability. As the demand for these alloys continue to increase, improved methods of manufacture must be explored. ^ This thesis describes Laser Assisted Milling (LAML) of Ti-6AL-4V (Ti-64) alloys, which studies localized preheating of the workpiece by a laser and characterizes the improvements to the machinability of these metals. A Department of Defense project was established to conduct a field demonstration led by Purdue University with several industry partners. The technology investigated was an air-source, two-stage heat pump with closed-loop economizing. The field demonstration site was a military barracks on a National Guard base, Camp Atterbury, in southern Indiana. Two heat pumps were built at the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories and installed into two almost identical, barracks buildings. Data on the heat pump operation and building conditions were to be collected over an entire heating season. The production of speech prosody (the rhythm, pausing, and intonation associated with natural speech) is critical to effective communication. The current study investigated the impact of age-related changes to physiology and cognition in relation to the production of two types of linguistic prosody: lexical stress and the disambiguation of syntactically ambiguous utterances. Analyses of the acoustic correlates of stress: speech intensity (or sound-pressure level; SPL), fundamental frequency (F0), key word/phrase duration, and pause duration revealed that both young and older adults effectively use these acoustic features to signal linguistic prosody, although the relative weighting of cues differed by group. Based on a hemispherical sensor geometry, a novel celestial navigation system is developed to use celestial objects to determine the absolute location and orientation information without the aid of satellites via two different approaches.
The first approach employs a hemispherical arrangement of light intensity sensors to determine the vector to the dominant light source. We present the sensing system to measure the sun vector via least squares method and achieve the application of a low-cost, small-sized solar compass. The system is shown to work well under ideal conditions but is susceptible to noise and uncertainties in some situations.

We present the background and motivation for ground vehicle autonomy, and focus on uses for space-exploration. Using a simple design example of an autonomous ground vehicle we derive the equations of motion. After providing the mathematical background for nonlinear systems and control we present two common methods for exactly linearizing nonlinear systems, feedback linearization and backstepping. We use these in combination with three adaptive control methods: model reference adaptive control, adaptive sliding mode control, and extremum-seeking model reference adaptive control. Inkjet printed lines on a homogeneous solid substrate are studied under the condition that ink evaporation is not negligible and the contact angle exhibits hysteresis with non-zero receding contact angle (NRCA). A new family of line instability is discovered, featured by formation of agglomerations within a line. The agglomeration is explained by a hydrodynamic flow that consistently drives a bead on the substrate towards fresh deposited droplets due to concentration-induced surface tension gradient. Morphologies of lines printed with multiple layers are also explored for the purpose of conductive trace fabrication. A non-uniform morphology is observed across a multi-layer line when …

Combustion instability has plagued the rocket industry since its beginnings. It is characterized by sustained pressure oscillations in the combustion chamber due to the coupling of natural pressure fluctuations with unsteady heat release. Typically, combustion instabilities are identified and mitigated during ground testing. Occasionally combustion instabilities do not present themselves until after a system is fielded and may only occur in a flight environment. While ground tests are heavily instrumented, operational flight data may not contain any direct measurement of the combustion forcing function. Post-event efforts to characterize anomalous combustion instabilities with existing instrumentation have had little success.

We propose the use of electrostatic force feedback to control the stiffness, damping, or mass of MEMS. If feedback forces are proportional to sensed displacement, velocity, or acceleration of a MEMS proof mass, then feedback can be used to increase or decrease the apparent stiffness, damping, and or mass of the MEMS. Such feedback can be used to compensate for process variations, packaging stress, thermal drift, viscous damping, etc. Prior efforts by others include position or velocity based feedback for modifying frequency, bandwidth, quality factor, or sensitivity of resonators. Performance tuning, health monitoring, fault diagnosis, etc. are important aspects of testing a pre-production engine out in the field. To fulfill these tasks, a robust data-based strategy for detecting anomalies in diesel engines is proposed in this work. Such a strategy separates the healthy data from outlying, anomalous trends of faulty data. The data classifier used here is based on fundamental principles of statistical learning and derived from linear discriminant analysis.

Such telescoping spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) models have been able to accurately predict observed center of mass (CoM) trajectories. The purpose of this research was to evaluate affordable technologies that are capable of providing attractive, cost-effective energy savings to the housing industry. The research did so by investigating the 2011 Solar Decathlon competition, with additional insight from the Purdue INhome. Insight from the Purdue INhome verified the importance of using a three step design process to design a net-zero energy building. In addition, energy consumption values of the INhome were used to compare and contrast different systems used in other houses.

The Solar Decathlon is a two year, international project where university students compete to design, build, and test energy-efficient, net-zero homes. By definition, net-zero energy houses annually produce as much electricity as they consume. The 2011 Solar Decathlon, held in Washington D.C., had 19 university teams from around the world.
Unfortunately, many past Solar Decathlon houses have traditionally been very costly. However, the 2011 Solar Decathlon was the first competition to have an affordability contest. Taking advantage of the symmetries, a heavy averaging on the data of a large number of specimens, results in an accurate determination of the structure of the sample. A look into spatial ability testing tools and the variations that past researchers made to focus on key factors that affect test scores, will demonstrate the need for tuning traditional testing methods to accommodate a wider demographic and provide more accurate results. The goal of this study was to quantify the contributions of multiple damping types acting on guitar strings for each mode over a wide frequency range so that design variables could be identified to one day create frequency based damping in guitar strings. Structural dynamic testing was used to obtain the time-response of a vibrating string in open air and in a vacuum. From this signal, each harmonic was filtered and the decay envelope was curve-fitted with a function that was a linear summation of decay functions. The purpose of this was to design and implement a two-axis solar tracking system utilizing the National Instruments C-Rio real time controller. In order to accomplish this a prototype was modeled in CAD. This prototype used two 12 V DC motors to change a solar panel's rotation and tilt based on feedback data from three cadmium sulfide photoresistors. In this paper, we propose a procedure to estimate the yield strength of thin films by debonding films from their substrate by elastic-plastic buckling under thermally-induced compressive loading. The out-of-plane displacement of the metal lines under conditions of elastic-plastic buckling is dependent on the yield strength of the film. Thus, an inverse estimate of the yield strength is made from measurements of the out-of-plane displacements of the buckled metal lines. The procedure is demonstrated to estimate the yield strength of aluminum lines consistent with measurements by other techniques.

This thesis describes the design, testing, and validation of an open-circuit, mid-sized wind tunnel used for the teaching of undergraduate courses and testing of green energy wind turbines. This thesis uses computational fluid dynamics to determine theoretical values for flow of the wind tunnel which were statistically compared to actual values of fluid flow. An overall analysis of efficiency and effectiveness were also performed. However, aerodynamic testing of actual prototype turbines will not be covered in this thesis, as it does not concern the tunnels adherence to theoretical flow values.

This project evaluated typical U.S. and Swiss homes to identify construction practices that are most energy efficient and have economic payback. A net zero energy home (ZEH) produces as much energy as is consumed in it over time. Students in a College o f Technology in a Midwest Indiana State University and a technical University in Switzerland resulted in developing models of homes that combined U.S. and Swiss standards.
