Simple orbital maneuvers obeying Kepler’s Laws, when taken with respect to Newton’s framework, require considerable time and effort to interpret and understand. Instead of a purely mathematical approach relying on the governing relations, a graphical geometric conceptual representation provides a useful alternative to the physical realities of orbits. Algae-derived biofuels are being commercialized as an important renewable energy source. Like any new technology, conversion improvements are desired, including reductions in process complexity and better utilization of the entire microalgae feedstock. We have used value sensitive design as a method to develop an agent-based model of values in humanitarian logistics for refugees. Schwartz’s theory of universal values is implemented in the model in such a way that agents can make value trade-offs, which are operationalized into a measure of refugee wellbeing and a measure of public opinion about how the refugee logistics is being handled. Stitching of dry fabrics is an efficient method for improving delamination resistance. Discontinuous fiber reinforced composites can be used as a lightweight alternative material for metals through a process of compression molding, which allows for complex shape manufacturing while offering structural grade mechanical properties.

Natural materials are made from weak constituents, yet exhibit an excellent synergy of high stiffness, strength, and damage-tolerance. They consist of alternate layers of the hard and soft phases with a complex hierarchical structural organization. The ice-templating technique provides an approach to fabricate multilayered architectures for engineering applications. In this technique, an aqueous ceramic suspension is solidified unidirectionally leading to phase separation into alternating layers of ice-crystals and ceramic particles. Ice-crystals are sublimated by freeze-drying process and resultant ceramic foams are sintered to impart strength. This increased use of small UAVs or “drones” has the unfortunate consequence of introducing excessive noise into communities where they operate. Automated fiber placement is a state-of-the-art manufacturing process that allows for complex layup patterns and can quickly place, cut, and restart composite tows. However, with this type of manufacturing process layup defects are inevitable, and manufacturing defects propagate after curing. Thermal contact resistance is an important parameter in detailed thermal analysis and design of aerospace systems. The ability to determine thermal contact resistance reliably can have a significant impact on the fidelity of thermal models—particularly for space applications. The 2004 NASA Langley Research Center thermal contact resistance test apparatus has been employed to evaluate two methods for inferring estimated interface surface temperatures so that thermal contact resistance can be calculated more accurately. Germanium-on-insulator (GeOI) films fabricated using the Smart Cut™ wafer bonding and film exfoliation technology were investigated for the mechanical properties and induced phase transformations by using nanoindentation and Raman spectroscopy experiments. The hardness and modulus results of the GeOI films are significantly different from the literature published Silicon-on-Insulator and bulk germanium results. The GeOI films are softer and more flexible as compared to bulk Ge hardness and stiffness properties. The Raman spectroscopy of the spherical indents indicates bands of metastable Ge phases @ 220 cm−1, 195 cm−1, and 184 cm−1 wavenumbers. Our results demonstrate that …

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of particle-laden fluid flows through a 90-degree pipe elbow at Reynolds numbers 1,000 and 10,000 were completed; for different dimensionless elbow curvature ratios of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5; and for particles with different Stokes numbers of 0.01, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0. There were two scenarios in the study. For the first, the particles felt drag from the primary (or the axial) flow as well as from the secondary fluid flows in the elbow. With several attractive properties, rotary lip seals are widely used in aircraft utility system, and their reliability estimation has drawn more and more attention. This work proposes a reliability estimation approach based on time-varying dependence analysis. The dependence between the two performance indicators of rotary lip seals, namely leakage rate and friction torque, is modeled by time-varying copula function with polynomial to denote the time-varying parameters, and an efficient copula selection approach is utilized to select the optimal copula function. For the first time, the influence of viscoelasticity on the EOF and the ionic conductance in the micro-nanofluidic interconnect system, with consideration of the electrical double layers (EDLs), is investigated. Regardless of the bulk salt concentration, significant enhancement of the flow rate is observed for viscoelastic fluid compared to the Newtonian fluid, due to the shear thinning effect. In this study, an integrated hydrodynamic, wave, and sediment transport modeling approach is developed for predicting the spatiotemporal variation of erosion of a sandy shoreline due to storm surge, wave action, tidal variations, and relative sea level rise (RSLR).
