In the usual thermal stress analysis of a body, the stresses are found for a predetermined temperature distribution. In problems involving composite materials, thermal contact resistance between materials can significantly affect the temperature distribution. The contact resistance is normally a function of the contact pressure and thermally induced stresses can affect the temperature distribution. Thus in composite bodies the thermal stress problem and the heat transfer problem may be coupled and require a simultaneous solution of both problems.

Heat transfer in turbulent flow from external surfaces has been investigated extensively in the past. Most of the theoretical and experimental work deals with a two dimensional boundary layer on isothermal or uniform heat flux surfaces with longitudinal temperature variation. However, little attention has ever been paid to the case in which the temperature of the plate varies transversely. This is a three dimensional problem due to the spanwise variation of the thermal boundary layer. In recent years, experiments have been carried out to evaluate the performance of water-filled cushion cells used to attenuate energy of automobile collisions. The water-filled cushion cell is a vinyl plastic cylinder of 6 inches nominal outside diameter, 1/4 inch wall thickness, 40 inches length, closed at the bottom by a cast-in-place vinyl plug and partially closed by a bolted-in vinyl diaphragm at the upper end. These cells are designed to be installed in the path of a crashing automobile to absorb and dissipate the kinetic energy of impact. Properly designed cushions could be used as one means of saving …

The purpose of this thesis was the development of a generalized structural-dynamics computer program to calculate the response of multi-degree-of-freedom systems. The user of this computer program, having a limited background in matrix algebra and vibrational analysis, can gain numerical and graphical information concerning the dynamic response of multi-degree-of-freedom structures. The user, with a minimal amount of FORTRAN experience, will find this thesis ideally suited for his needs.

In recent years there has been an extensive development of finite difference techniques for solution of the transient heat conduction equation due to the availability of high-speed digital computers. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate and compare several implicit methods for the solution of the Fourier equation with regards to truncation error, round-off error and computer time which probably are among the most important factors to be considered in choosing a method.

One of the basic goals in engineering is to generate models which will provide a means for analytically predicting observed phenomenon. Such a model is often modified several times to obtain better results. The purpose of this study was to generate a model for an equilibrium turbulent boundary layer for steady flow over a flat plate and compare the results obtained by using the model with experimental data. Part of the objective was to also suggest ways in which the model could be modified to obtain better results.

The term water clarifier as used in this text refers to a versatile water treatment unit which combines flocculation and coagulation, clarification and positive sludge removal in a single tank. Water clarifiers are very compact units which are being used in municipal and industrial water treatment for the removal of turbidity, algae, color, iron and silica; lime or lime-soda softening; magnesium precipitation; brine clarification; and waste water clarification with or without chemicals. Water clarifier units have found wide use in the sanitary field, providing high removals in the pre-treatment of sewage and in secondary sewage treatment through addition of coagulants.

The objective of this study was to determine the correlation of the drag coefficient of an accelerating sphere in the liquid medium over a range of Reynolds number from 0.1 to 100, 000. A magnetic accelerator was used to obtain an acceleration for the sphere, the data was recorded using a photograph and a digital computer was used to reduce the data.

The object of this investigation was to determine the effect of acceleration on the drag of spheres as it differs from the steady state case. Steady state drag applies to the force acting on a single sphere moving at constant velocity through an infinite, continuous, incompressible, turbulence free fluid. Extensive experimentation has quite thoroughly documented the steady state drag characteristics of spheres. A dimensionless parameter associated with the drag force is sometimes used to correlate drag characteristics.
