The constant evolution of data centers and high-power electronic systems has raised critical challenges in heat dissipation and thermal management. Single-phase immersion cooling, where electronic components are submerged in a thermally conductive but non-electrically conductive liquid (dielectric liquid), offers improved heat dissipation capabilities and emerges as a promising alternative to traditional air-cooling methods, which often fail to meet the thermal demands of densely packed, high-power systems. The shadowgraphy imaging technique was adapted to analyze the droplet field from a spray nozzle inside the gas absorption section of a compact column gas scrubber. This technique in conjunction with a developed image processing technique was able to gain statistical size information at different distances from two types of spray nozzles. The gas scrubber then ran a parametric campaign of eight operating conditions and statistical size information was captured for each case with the goal of understanding how operating conditions affect the droplet field properties. Climate change and rising electricity demand have driven the need for energy efficiency in buildings. Single-family residential buildings present opportunities for improvement, but current strategies for identifying savings are labor and capital-intensive. Developing a residential version of a virtual energy audit tool offers a cheaper, non-intrusive alternative. This study used 25 all-electric homes in Florida to refine algorithms from the previously developed EDIFES code, originally designed for commercial buildings. The analysis utilized one year of 15-minute electricity consumption, area, stories, and location. Instability of structures, such as large vertical pressure vessels, is always an issue under the seismic load. In this current work, the acceleration that causes instability for a vertical pressure vessel has been determined experimentally using scaled models. This instability is caused by the tipping of the tall structure that is not completely fixed to the ground. This method is applied for three different sizes of pressure vessels, representing 50 CuFt to 1100 CuFt full scale models. These experimental results are compared with theoretical models. The present study addresses the compressibility error inherent in the standard Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and LBM’s restriction to uniform Cartesian meshes. To mitigate the compressibility error, an incompressible LBM (iLBM) model has been incorporated into the finite volume framework using a cell-centered finite volume approach, leveraging the simplicity of the LBM algorithm for irregularly shaped flow domains with unstructured meshes. Monotonic Upstream-centered Scheme for Conservation Laws (MUSCL) and linear reconstruction (LR) schemes have been used to compute convective fluxes across the cell interfaces with boundary conditions implemented using the second-order accurate Non-Equilibrium Extrapolation (NEE) method.

The effective attenuation of wave propagation in specific frequency ranges, known as bandgaps, makes metastructures valuable in various engineering applications. Traditionally, bandgap estimation has relied on physics-based models, which present challenges for complex metastructures where accurate material properties and geometric complexities make precise modeling difficult. This work introduces data-driven techniques for bandgap estimation, leveraging the dynamic behavior, particularly the Frequency Response Functions (FRFs) of unit cells, to calculate dispersion relations and couple unit cells through dynamic substructuring. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional methods by directly utilizing experimental data to characterize both longitudinal and flexural bandgaps.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a naturally occurring cardiovascular phenomenon referring to the changing timing between consecutive heartbeats. The connection between HRV and overall cardiovascular health and autonomic nervous system function has been well established through prior research and well documented in existing literature. The existing studies, however, included shorter HRV subject recording session, using traditional HRV monitoring methods that do not typically combine electrocardiogram (ECG), seismocardiogram (SCG) and galvanic skin response (GSR) respiration monitoring. The inclusion of longer HRV subject recording may allow for further insight on the possible effects of given observable biological phenomenon on HRV.

A study is presented to investigate self-supervised contrastive learning (SSCL) models using physiological data obtained from non-invasive wearable sensors for mental stress assessment. The present work involved acquisition of electroencephalography (EEG) signals using wearable sensors, signal preprocessing, data augmentation, and investigation of self-supervised contrastive learning (SSCL) algorithms for multi-class mental stress assessment. Seven volunteers participated in this study executing various mental tasks while wearing an OpenBCI head cap to acquire EEG signals. This doctoral dissertation focuses on the resilience of power transmission infrastructure in tropical coastal environments, particularly in the face of extreme weather events such as hurricanes. The research is anchored on the case of the passage of Hurricane Maria in the Island of Puerto Rico in September of 2017 which caused the largest damage on the power infrastructure in US history. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are central in numerous high-demand applications due to their high energy density and prolonged cycle life. Despite these advantages, their susceptibility to thermal runaway (TR) poses a significant safety risk, with the potential for catastrophic failures. This study focuses on the thermal behavior of prismatic lithium-ion cells, using a finite volume-based partial differential equation (PDE) solver developed in MATLAB and JULIA to model TR behavior. The primary evaluation metric is the transfer matrix, determined experimentally, with an emphasis on key properties such as transmission loss. To ensure accuracy and broad applicability, the methodology is based on industry-standard techniques for determining the transfer matrix. A comprehensive literature review consolidates existing approaches for hydraulic attenuator characterization.
